Amell is a fairly young actor, but in a little under 20 years, he has managed to rack up an impressive 56 acting credits with more on the way. From an early age, he took an interest in acting and began performing in theater as a child. When he was just 17, he landed his first major role in a Hollywood movie that starred Steve Martin, Cheaper by the Dozen 2.

Since then, he has continued to work consistently in TV and film with many projects that have increased his popularity. He is also the cousin of Stephen Amell, who played Oliver Queen in Arrow. Amell has also enjoyed success recently in the Amazon Prime original series, Upload, where he plays the lead character Nathan Brown. The Netflix comedy horror movie, The Babysitter was released in 2017, and a sequel was released in 2020 with The Babysitter: Killer Queen. In both movies, Amell plays Max, a jock who is attempting to make a deal with the devil to get success and popularity. Max is a stereotypical jock, with very little intelligence and an abundance of muscles. Along with the other occultists, Max is brought back from the dead in this sequel to hunt down young Cole and offer up a blood sacrifice.

When We First Met is a Netflix original rom-com, starring Adam DeVine as the boy next door who is hopelessly in love with his friend, Avery. Amell plays Avery's fiancée, Ethan, and by all accounts, he is a sweet, kind, and dependable guy. Seeing him move away from earlier roles where he was often typecast as a jock, to becoming the mild-mannered gentleman is likely a part of what took Amell from playing background characters like a bully, or a frat guy, and helped him to land roles as the leading man and love interest in other projects like Upload.

2015

The DUFF

The DUFF, directed by Ari Sandel, is a teen comedy about high school senior Bianca Piper, played by Mae Whitman, who discovers she has been labeled the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) by her more famous peers. Determined to reinvent herself, Bianca seeks the help of a charming athlete to help put her on the social map.

The DUFF is a teenage comedy with a feel-good message about self-acceptance. The movie stars Mae Whitman as Bianca, who people frequently used to get to her more popular friends. Amell is the popular football-playing neighbor boy, Wesley, who is dating the most popular girl in school, who also happens to be bullying Bianca. Wesley is mostly a good guy, but is often led by his immature desires and says things thoughtlessly. Amell does a great job playing the nuanced character who grows and learns to accept himself, rather than trying to impress others.

7 A Series Of Unfortunate Events

The Netflix adaptation of A Series of Unfortunate Events was a critically acclaimed show starring Neil Patrick Harris as Count Olaf. Throughout the show, the unfortunate Baudelaire orphans find themselves repeatedly being chased and endangered by Olaf who seeks their inherited fortune. The show features a colorful cast of characters, with Amell turning up in the second and third seasons as the ambidextrous Kevin. His character provides a great deal of comic relief, with his unwarranted angst over what he regards as a "freakish" ability to use both of his hands equally well.

Code 8 started life as a short film project that Robbie and Stephen Amell were passionate about creating together. The two stars launched an Indiegogo campaign to get the movie made with minimal studio oversight. While they initially aimed to raise about $200,000, the campaign was wildly successful, and they ended up raising more than $2.5 million (via Indiegogo). The film already had a dedicated fanbase of almost 31,000 backers, and the feature-length project delivered an incredible new superhero story. The project was successful enough to get bought out by Netflix, and they produced a sequel.

The original The Babysitter movie introduces young Cole and his babysitter, Bee, whom he adores. When Cole is up in his bedroom for the night, he overhears Bee with some friends, as they discuss how to kill Cole for their ritual. Amell plays Max, the jock, and has some great scenes throughout the film when he chases and attempts to hunt down Cole, before being repeatedly caught up in a series of Home Alone-style traps. Amell is great in the film and plays the stereotype well, while also including an underlying layer of malice and evil in the character.

With Netflix buying the rights to the Code 8 franchise, the sequel had a much bigger studio backing and scaled up the production. Code 8: Part II continues the story of Connor (Robbie) and Garrett (Stephen), with the pair now in conflict due to their differing moral values. When Connor is released from prison, it isn't long before he ends up running into his old ally, and the pair find themselves both being chased by police. The emotional impact of the story takes a step up from the previous entry and potentially sets up another sequel to build the franchise.

When the accelerator causes an explosion, Allen is struck by lightning and enters a coma. When he wakes up, he learns he has the ability to move at superhuman speeds, though he is not the only meta-human created in the wake of the explosion. Amell also appeared in the Arrowverse, where his cousin Stephen Amell played Oliver Queen. Amell is most prominently featured in The Flash, where he played Ronnie Raymond, Caitlin Snow's husband, and the hero, Firestorm. Soon after he died as a hero, Jefferson Jackson stepped in to take over his role as one-half of the Firestorm persona. Amell then also returned in the final season of The Flash, as the character Deathstorm, but in each role, he had an opportunity to play a superpowered character, which appears to be becoming a trend for Amell.
