After a good experience finding The Munch Box in Chatsworth on a lunch stop, I thought I would stop at George's to see if it was another old-time gem. The A rating from the health department suggested that was a possibility. It certainly looks the..."old-time" part with cobwebs stuck to the overhand ceiling in front of the order window, the bladeless outdoor ceiling fans, and the tired look of the property. There were enough diners at the outside tables to tell me the food had to at least be decent.
The cheeseburger tasted like one you would get off a friend's grille at a party if he knew how to cook burgers well, but the onion rings were over-breaded and hard. The line seemed unusually slow, and a panhandler asking for money to buy an omelette didn't make the wait any better. He did provide a bit of entertainment when he laughed and charged the display of potato chips on the other side of the storefront window. One of the staff offered him a burrito to take his act down the street.
In brief, if you're in the mood for a decent burger from a nostalgia-inducing building with a cool retro sign outside, George's could be the place for you-- especially if you're not in a hurry.More
