Carol & Company
Kind’s first breakout role was on this NBC sketch comedy series led by the legendary Carol Burnett. Debuting in 1990 and running for two seasons, the series boasted a promising ensemble that included not only Kind but future Emmy winner Jeremy Piven and Terry Kiser, of Weekend at Bernie’s fame.
“We had a magnificent cast. That was a challenging show. I call it The Twilight Zone for comedy, because it was an anthology series, and every week, you had a half-hour play, and in a play, you have to introduce characters, tell them what the problem is, see the problem and then resolve it. All with about six or seven people, the center usually being Carol. That’s a difficult proposition. But I would say 62 percent of the time, it was really good. Like The Twilight Zone. There were some clunkers on The Twilight Zone. They were not all perfect. And there were one or two where people, to this day, come up to me and quote some of those things. They probably were kids home on a Saturday night.”
Richard Kind is so fun to watch. I absolutely loved Spin City and him in it. He was great.
He was George Clooney’s ex-roomate, and still pretty much best friends with him. He knows pretty much everyone in Hollywood and all the behind the scenes details. And yet, you’d never realize how fascinating he is based on how so many of us assume he’s like his typecast character.
The East New York bit made me laugh out loud. Love Richard Kind.
I know with a career like Richard Kind’s you can’t fit everything in, but I was hoping for something on Red Oaks, a very underrated show and I think his best work.
I’ve never heard of that… Kind? Reiser? Set in the 80s?! I’m so in, thanks for mentioning it, I will definitely check it out!
I was always disappointed that he wasn’t in more episodes on Mad About You. I don’t know what they were thinking not inviting him back. His character was hilarious. Great actor!
Richard Kind is great in everything. And a great voice actor.
It’s far from his best role, but I loved his guest appearance on the first season of Almost Paradise (a show I feel like no one saw). He played Christian Kane’s uncle who’s a con artist and so he gets to be charming and funny, but he does a great job of showing this dark dramatic edge in a way that was really satisfying and great to see. It was a role that isn’t a stretch for Kind – he can do easily, but perfectly. Charming and funny and desperate and a little sad.
Stargate Atlantis. Thats all I’m gonna say
Two memorable bits from Richard Kind in my memory: as a bad guy in the Bruce Greenwood series Nowhere Man, and as a grumpy neighbor who objects to Sherlock’s apiary on Elementary. He always stands out in a TV cast.
I LOVE Richard Kind. In almost EVERY role I have seen him in with the one exception of his turn on Stargate Atlantis. I did NOT like his character then. I think he was the main draw card for me to watch East New York.
One of the other actors who got his start in the cast of “Carol & Company” (not in the photo) was Peter Krause of “Six Feet Under,” “Parenthood” and “911.”
And in the “Pinot noir” episode of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt!
Some wonderful characters by a fantastic actor.
He seems like a very kind person.
Was very disappointed when East New York was canceled.
Love him!
Can’t believe they didn’t invite him back on Mad About You. I had assumed he left for Spin City
No mention of ‘Red Oaks’? REALLY?
I would’ve asked him about his guest role on Everything’s Gonna Be Okay
Amazed that no one has mentioned his role on Gotham. He is one talented man.
He’s always brilliant and funny. Check him out in Red Oaks on Prime. Both he and Paul Reiser were not only fantastically funny but showed their dramatic chops.
