Richard Fontaine Obituary

Oct 17, 1929 - Mar 25, 2022 Richard, age 92 passed away peacefully, March 25, 2022. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Elizabeth "Libby" Fontaine. Father to James Fontaine (Wilhemina), Sheryl Fontaine, Susan Bolibrush (Joseph), and Grandfather to Sarah, Christopher, David, Robert and Jay. After graduation from Alfred College of Technology, Dick had a long career with General Motors. He and Libby enjoyed their retirement years in New Bern, NC, boating, traveling, and making memories with many cherished friends. Dick was an active volunteer at Craven County Hospital, and the NC Maritime Museum, where he restored and built boats. His long lineage of Great Lakes captains and his great love and knowledge of seamanship drew him to the US Coast Guard where he was a member of the Axillary. He mentored and trained many "Coasties" in navigation and was given multiple awards for his work. A private family ceremony will be held. Memorial donations may be made to NC Coastal & Piedmont Chapter of the ACBS Scholarship Fund, 1505 Wildhurst Lane, Wake Forest, NC 27587. 440-842-7800 www.buschcares.com

I greatly enjoyed Richard and my time together, chatting and laughing, during the last year of his life. This world is definitely a sadder place without him. Thank you, Richard, for your service to our great nation and to the people you trained and assisted. - Faith L. Schultz, CDR, U.S. Coast Guard
