Q&A
Come on... post a better picture of him from this year, like...
http://i.imgur.com/nitHyYR.jpg
...or from the past couple years, whenever.
He's up there in age, so what! :-P
He's still Jack O'Neill. :-)
He's still MacGyver.
He's still RDA.
In other words, he's still an awesome, nice, very cool guy.
FYI your image link actually links to a gallery (probably an auto-redirect from the site).
Fixed it.
That is some epic facial hair he's rocking.
I know, right? He could be 100 years old and he'd still be cool.
He's got a chill biker-esque look going on nowadays.
Maybe he should be cast in a biker movie/show. ;p

He doesn't look so bad. I think the pic in the OP is from a couple years ago.
Apparently he's been on heavy-duty steroids for a while. Those will bloat you like crazy. Although I agree that unlike the OP pic this looks a hell of a lot more like normal aging than steroids bloat.
No. That neck/face situation is definitely steroids. Prednisone will definitely do that to you.
Well at the very least in u/Ymir_from_Saturn's pic he's actually recognizable.
Ah that makes sense. I was quite shocked when I saw photos of him from more recently that he had ballooned in weight so much. What meds was/ is he on and why?
Med related weight gain is a prick. I've put on so much weight in the past 12-18 months, partially due to my mental health medication (and partially due to poor diet and no exercise due to poor mental health!)
Man.. Hate seeing him get old. I don't want him to go :(
A couple years ago, or a couple drinks later?
3 decades will do that to you.
Don't forget the knee injuries
He was on long-term steroids from his injuries. Looks like (at least in part) the results of Cushings to me.
I was having a brainfart and was going to say it was some kind of thyroid thing, but yeah, this is it. Steroids will bloat you like nothing else. I was hospitalized for a month in middle school for ulcerative colitis, and I'd lost something like 40 pounds (however much weight it was, it was it was intense, I was fucking rail thin by the end of that hospital visit). But with clothes on I didn't necessarily look like I'd lost much if any weight, because the heavy-duty steroids I was on bloated my face so much.
I thought it was a back injury that really took him down
Ah, that mustache. Fits the bill for a mid-80s junior high PE coach.
I was thinking the whole look is 'retired Chicago cop.'
Looks like a grandpa
OMG, it's Captain Kangaroo, Bob Keeshan!!!
Seriously, though: wishing RDA good health as he advances forward for hopefully many more years!
How's his health nowadays? Heard he had some kind of accident lately and something about a knee problem a few years ago?
I don't know anything up to date but he has broken both knees at various points.
The reason O'Neill was given a Tok'ra symbiote in 'Frozen' was to allow him to miss 'Nightwalkers' so he could have knee surgery. He wasn't actually in a lot of O'Neill's scenes in 'Abyss' either. Ba'al spends most of the episode talking to a body double.
He has also had two vertebrae removed from his back.
Is he doing better now? He's just 66, but from the pictures from these last couple of years it looks like he has aged so much.
I sure do hope he gets back in fighting shape.
I know he's not as active as he used to be. His long list of injuries stems from his interests in skiing and extreme sports when he was younger.
He went to rescue his dog and instead fell down some stairs. Exact quote of his injuries :
as most of you may know by now I recently performed a head plant onto a cement surface, sustaining a concussion, broken rib, sprained left wrist, and an oddly broken right elbow. Right now, and for at least the next 12 weeks, I will be in a splint on my right arm to completely limit any rotation or peripheral movement of the arm.
Man, that sucks...
He looks like Ron Swanson and Alec Baldwin did the Fusion Dance.
That pic is old (as in years old) when his health stuff were bad,
here's an interview from 5ish months ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sF2soQbiA9M
and here's a clip from month-ish ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0CmzBpASP8
l honestly think its just the expression and the mustache in OP's photo. The clip from last month has him looking fine.
I love that interview. lol. Pretty typical RDA.
I loved how he turned the fan girl thing around on her,"I'm smitten!"
"Harder, harder, harder"
-RDA, 2016
It's called retirement.
After a decades long career playing action-heavy roles where he has to stay in shape, he's earned the right to let himself go a bit. He looks like he's enjoying a nice quiet life. Good for him.
"Retired."
I was going to say just that. He deserves to let loose a little after being on such a strict exercise and diet regime for so many decades. Enjoy his life and money and family :)
"Good" for him? Is it really?
I'm not saying everyone should be working out 6 hours a day or watch what they eat every single meal, but there is a point when "letting yourself go" can affect your health.
Forget the fact that you're essentially killing yourself, what about other people in your life that may be affected? Your parents who may lose a child, your spouse who may lose a partner, your own children who may lose a parent.
If the little "happiness" you may get from shoving one more slice of chocolate cake into your mouth outweighs spending another month with your loved ones, you may have a more serious issue...
With all that said, I more than understand it may be more "difficult" for some than others to stay in shape and healthy. Some may even have diseases that prevent them from gaining unnecessary weight. But only you know whether you're actually trying or have pretty much given up.
Everyone has the right to live like they want in their later years.
Just like people can be, in my opinion, idiots in their early years by going out clubbing, getting hammered and doing drugs, people can can sit back, relax and eat that extra piece of chocolate cake after experiencing 60 years of life.
Maybe that person doesn't really want to live beyond a certain age. I certainly don't want to hit my sixties or seventies. I'm 36 right now and feel that by that time, I won't fit in with the way the world is changing and I'll be unable to keep up. I'll know for sure as that time approaches.
I get what you're saying and agree with your first paragraph. It's the second I having trouble with! I am almost the same age, and I change mentally year in, year out. I'm not the same person I was even just 6 months ago. Totally see you said that you'll know for sure when the time comes...but you're VERY young to be saying you don't think you wanna live to 60 or 70. Respect for your opinion and your views...and your views about you are of course your own...just think 36 is young to say that.
Of course everyone has the "right" to live however they want, no matter what age they may be. But there are also ways to live that are morally right and those that are not. So just because you have the "right" to do something, it doesn't necessarily means it's right. Lastly, there are consequences to all of our actions, such as me speaking out against letting yourself go and giving up on your health only to be attacked by this YOLO generation.
So people have the 'right' to live their lives how they want, unless it conflicts with your conception of 'right'.
Dude! Simmer down. From looking at that picture all you can tell it's that RDA has a case of the old-fashioned middle aged spread. That doesn't equal "unhealthy" and everyone gets it a bit when the reach a certain age. Relax and worry about yourself instead of preaching to others based on a single photo with no context. Yeesh!
Eh, ignore them, they seem to be overly invested in their soapbox.
Again, I don't know about RDA's situation nor do I care. My whole post was against your statement that "letting yourself go after retirement" = good.
Ah reddit, never stops fat shaming.
That term leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.
It's not about shaming someone for being fat. It's about being healthy and being responsible for yourself and those in your life. In nowhere in my post did I ever laughed at RDA (or anyone) for being fat. Being fat is just a situation, it's one's attitude that need to be examined. If you're fat because you have a disease that prevent you from properly digest and process food (or something similar, please pardon me as I'm not a medical expert) but you try to eat healthy and exercise as much as you can, then there is no shame. But if you sit on your couch all day shoving junk food into your mouth while giving a middle finger to life because "you've had enough fun" without considering your responsibility to those around you, then yeah, you should be shamed.
What responsibility?
Your whole post is chastising him for being overweight. And who the hell else are you talking about in a thread about RDA? Some random hypothetical person? Give me a break.
You are redic
Wow, thank you, your short, but meaningful message. It has truly made me see the light.
Yes, indeed, it is quite ridiculous to care about one's health and responsibilities.
Fuck it.
Here's an image of him from May of this year:
Imgur
Definitely slimmed down.
I would not have recognized him.
Generals get to eat what they want. Perks of homeworld security
He looks like Lech Waless former president of Poland
No, he doesn't.
He's still awesome. Don't let his age fool you, he's still the same awesome dude and he'll be that same awesome dude until he dies. Not only was he Macgyver but he was the reason Stargate was a popular human show for over a decade. Appreciate him, he's worth it.
I know its off topic, but does anyone else wish they found a role for him in the Expendables?
To me, he would have been an nice change..
http://www.seashepherdglobal.org/special-events/gatecon-and-legends-present-the-homecoming.html
I'm sad now
People seem to have a need for their celebrity heroes to never change. Must suck for the ones who just wants to cut loose a bit after all of those years staying in shape to fit the role.
He looks happy and alert. I'm happy for him.
Letting yourself go is never a good thing.
He’s gorgeous still.
My dad looks a lot different in retirement than he did when he was staring a career too. Age happens.
Age is a hell of a drug.
Is this really him?
Yeah. He's put on weight as he's aged. You could see it in Universe as well.
There is an interview from late last year where he discusses MacGyver and Stargate and such.
He's lost weight since then though. He recorded a message for Gatecon in Vancouver last month.
Definitely slimmer here...good for him.
Wow, he could play a sergeant on a tv cop drama.
whars that and him withbsteroids? what knee injury?
SG-1 reboot??
Rowsdower?
He is working hard to be the next Santa Claus!!!! Image Jack/MacGyver Santa !!! Totally bad ass

Ouch, tis' but a joke...
Yeah we all get it. It's just a joke that a douche bag would make.
It's one I made about myself when I was at my heaviest. God forbid people make fun! Take that stick out of your ass.
I still love him. To much of a fan from Stargate, as I'm on season 7 episode 15 again for the umpteenth time. I'm so lucky, watching Stargate every couple of years or so it's like watching for the 1st time. Thanks to Richard Dean Anderson
