When visiting this vast emporium of splendid art always decide what period to concentrate on, to get full enjoyment from the experience.

This occasion it was predominantly 18th and 19th century works. By some of the greats in all of art creation.

Monet and Manet are plentiful. The latter’s Execution of Maximilian covers the real life execution of the Archduke by Mexican Republicans in 1867. A powerful portrayal.

Degas is well represented, with his signature Ballet Dancers plus Young Spartans Exercising. Van Gogh works were grand to see again.

A few from the later century included Sorolla’s Valencian Fishermen and The Drunkard. These are not in his usual style of filled with Spanish sunshine, but still striking.

The Victoria and Albert Museum or V&A is the single most unique display in the world. The ethos is to show people things that they would have travel to see. It dates back to the 1851 exhibition when countries showed off their wonders to Brits but could not return them. This ethos is still valid today. I rate this museum as the best I have seen. Take a couple of days you will love it.

A fantastic collection of specimen: dinosaurs is probably the most interesting one, but also human development (my favourite), history of Earth. It is magic. A must see also for children. I spent tons of time there.

Had pre booked tickets so no issues with queueing, huge amount of information available on the setting up and daily life in the war rooms. The Churchill museum was information overload, and, as not in chronological order, a little confusing. The layout of this part also didn’t help as couldn’t work out if we’d missed anything. The free audio guide was great, although the signs with numbers to press were not always easy to see. Outside the Churchill museum bit, you are back in the war rooms and while there’s not much to see (desks / phones / maps etc) the audio guide brings it to life with stories from the people who worked there mixed in with the commentary. Worth a visit.

I hadn't been to the IWM for many years, and this first return visit was a bit disappointing. Yes, there is plenty to see, but I had expected more. Despite its recent revamp, it makes a rather tired impression.

We took our grandchildren here as a Christmas treat and they thoroughly enjoyed it. They loved being photographed with some of their favourite characters, especially in the Marvel and Star Wats zones. At the beginning of the walk through we found it difficult because the displays didn’t seem to have names and we aren’t into ‘celebrity’ but as you walk through there are clear plaques and information boards. We avoided the horror section as two of our group were quite young but they did enjoy the black cab ride through history. Overall, it’s great attraction for kids.

I went because I heard good things about it from friends and since it was included in the London pass, I decided to give it a go.

The first part was a well thought out glimpse into the history of the bridge from Roman to Victorian times. Though the sets are a bit worse for wear, it was fun and the actors did their best to bring their characters to life. Especially the barman at the end was really engaging and I would have stayed and listened to him a bit longer.

Afterwards the scary part of the experience begins, within a haunted house style walking attraction. As there are several real people in there to frighten you, expect a number of jump scares. You walk through different classic horror themed areas which give off a bit of a ghost train vibe adding to the experience. Some scares are really unexpected and if you go there with younger children you might want to opt for their guardian angel option.

All in all a fun, scary experience.

The museum exceeded my expectations. Must be getting on for 100 planes on display, from early 20th century (a fighting plane made largely of bamboo!) to moden fighter planes and unmanned drones. Lots of interactive stuff for kids, as well as playground etc and lots of space outside for running around. When our grandson is a big bigger ... I did the Battle of Britain tour / talk with our guide, Guy. He was excellent, friendly, knowledgeable, interesting. I learnt a lot - well worth a tenner. Admission is free with a suggested donation but the car park will cost you £7.50 or £10. All in all, an excellent day out for anyone with any interest in planes, amazing machinery, or warfare. (My only negative was the sandwiches - only ones avaivable were cheap ham or cheese in plasticy white bread! Hot food looked better, decent choice for kids).

I remember coming here as a child and it scared the life out of me. All of the creepy models that were there now have seemed to have disappeared and replaced by more of an actor experience. It was still really good and immersive but I do like a bit of nostalgia they should bring a good section of these back.

We had been several times to London but never been to any of its several museums. We made a point of visiting the Science Museum this time and the only thing I was disappointed about was the fact that we didn’t really give ourselves enough time to explore. We were there for a few hours but I really think it could be a full day thing. Very educational and very enjoyable too. Recommended.

HMS Belfast, launched in 1938, is the last of the WW2 light cruises. It is docked in London just a short walk from London Bridge station so is very easy to reach. We spent around 4 hours on board (this did include morning coffee from their café, then later a picnic lunch that we ate at on the picnic tables on the deck).

It is worth getting a free map before you board as the ship is quite a labyrinth so it is easy to miss a lot, and there are many interesting things to see. The weapons store I found very interesting, along with items relating to the day to day life on the ship and the things needed to support this. In the room prior to going down into the store there are many hammocks hung up. During the visit you can get quite a good appreciation of what life may of have been like onboard – although when in use the ship had a crew of 761 and there could have been many more people onboard – I image this would have felt very crowded.

One our first visit (we have visited twice in the last year and was amazed on the second visit of how much we missed first time) we did meet former crew members (who were onboard for a “Committal of Ashes to the Sea” service for one of their ex-comrades – which we witnessed) and it was very interesting having a quick chat with one of them.
