You can go in and wander around and read the information boards for free, but there's also an interpretive centre that costs CAD6 to go in (which you really should do as it helps to pay for the excellent work they do there). We were fortunate that there was a lady doing informal tours and she walked round with us for 15 minutes telling us about the work they do.
Really interesting and very well worth a visit.
Had 26 elementary kids at the hatchery. It was fun and informative.
There were games and costumes for the kids. Live fish in some tanks. Videos of predictors towards salmon. Large puzzles made from wood. Also a Super size Jenga game. They have a small shop to purchase some fun items. Or clothing items. It is very clean.
This was a great wet weather outing. There is so much for the kids to do in quite a small area. The activities were mostly hands on and unique.
We had already been to a salmon hatchery whilst in BC so we ventured on the walk from the stewardship building. The walk loop is not far to walk from the building it crosses a bridge over the Quatse River, the walk meanders through quite dense undergrowth bordering the river. There is a sign telling you to beware of bears so you need to make a few noises so as not to surprise them. We saw lots of salmon ('pinks') from the river on the walk through the hatchery gate. We didn't see a bear here but did see one catching a salmon further towards the estuary by the parking lot just by the road junction for Port Hardy. Worth keeping your eyes open!!
A really interesting hatchery trip gives a great perspective on salmon. Great for kids with easy to understand presentations and the tour to see the tanks and understand the process with one of the staff.
We had just dropped in to fill in some time but stayed far longer than intended and learnt masses during our stay.
Certainly allocate a good 2 or 3 hours to get full value here.
The salmon hatchery centre is set up really well for children. As adults we found it really interesting too. Perry, took us on a personal tour, and gave us lots of great info about the salmon, & the processes at the hatchery. We enjoyed our visit, & recommend it. While you're there, you can do the short Quatse River trail too - very pretty.
