Ready Player One is a sweetly nostalgic thrill ride that neatly encapsulates Spielberg's strengths while adding another solidly engrossing adventure to his filmography.

Patrick The 70MM was excellent. I already liked the film but seeing it again in this way was a dream, and I enjoyed it quite a bit. :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/11/23 Full Review Tyler I was entertained but that's where my review stops unfortunately. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 07/11/23 Full Review Scott J loved everything part of the movie and a great adaptation to the book! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/23 Full Review Nick G Nick G. A fun movie to watch, but feels long and missing something. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 06/13/21 Full Review John J Visually appealing, but if you loved the book this isn't it. The characters go from being independent bad asses competing towards a goal to parzival fanboys. The deep knowledge of the hunt goes from, what was the name of the developer on his favorite game that got canned to what's his favorite food. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review Ian G One of the least interesting movies I've watched. The most enjoyable parts of the movie are the scenes with I-r0k, who I think is the character who feels the most natural in the setting. He is a genuinely entertaining and sympathetic character. I have two primary criticisms. The first is that the character of Wade Watts sucks. He claims to love the OASIS, but once he gets a girlfriend and inherits a bunch of money he decides to shut it down for EVERYONE on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Imagine being someone who is reliant on the OASIS for your livelihood and the owner decides to restrict your access because they think you should spend more time outside. Wade Watts is a hypocrite and needs therapy. The second criticism is that the OASIS sucks. The concept of a "metaverse" as a product/service primarily appeals to grifters and suckers, and the OASIS feels like a bottom of the barrel Metaverse only being kept alive by IP licensing deals. The OASIS is so chock full of references that it was difficult for me to find any original content that had any significance. The popularity of the OASIS implies that the people of the world only care about sign value. Ready Player One is the book/movie equivalent of a McDonald's Happy Meal promotional toy. The IP it references only serves to increase marketing appeal while distracting from the fundamentally poor value of the product. Heather Hogan Autostraddle A heckin fun movie, full of stunning action sequences and laughs and winks at the kids who grew up watching Back to the Future and Jurassic Park and E.T. and Indiana Jones. Aug 27, 2021 Full Review Robert Daniels 812filmreviews It's pure entertainment, and gives Spielberg an easel to prop his sentimental painting on, and all the colors on his palette to do so. Rated: 3/4 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Jonathan Romney Film Comment Magazine For all its ferocious energy, Ready Player One strikes me as the product of a cinema of exhaustion-it's a film about having come too far and being at the end of something, where extraordinary things no longer mean much, or have become toxic. Apr 5, 2018 Full Review Maia Rose But Why Tho? A Geek Community While the first half of [Ready Player One] is all trivia is the superior form of geekdom and awkward geekboy somehow managing to get the geekgirl interested the second half shows how you can form real communities online. Rated: 5/10 Jan 21, 2023 Full Review Tony Black Cultural Conversation Steven Spielberg delivers the ultimate expression of why we digest media, and possibly a glimpse into a world we could all be heading towards. Rated: 3.5/5 Apr 3, 2022 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review With Ready Player One, you can feel director Steven Spielberg pushing to reclaim his status as Hollywood's crowned head of spectacle as he pours his considerable talent into another memorable science-fiction fantasy.
