The Fabulous Thunderbirds are joining the lineup!
For over 30 years, The Fabulous Thunderbirds have been the quintessential American band. The group’s distinctive and powerful sound, influenced by a diversity of musical styles, manifested itself into a unique musical hybrid via such barnburners as “Tuff Enuff” and “Wrap It Up”. Co-founder Kim Wilson, the sole original member, still spearheads the group as it evolves into its newest incarnation.
“We started as a straight blues band”, vocalist and harmonica player Wilson says. “We now incorporate a mixture of a lot of different styles. We’re an American music band and we’re much higher energy than we were before.”
“To be in the T-Birds, you need to understand the different styles of music and different ways of playing,” Wilson comments. “You have to be willing to adopt a more contemporary style. The guys we have now are able to do that.”
The band continues to tour extensively, in both the U.S. and Europe. Wilson is currently writing songs on his own, with band members and other writers.
“I’ve primarily been a solo songwriter, but I’m looking forward to experimenting with the guys in the band,” Wilson says.
The thread throughout the T-Birds career has been the respect the group commanded for its peerless musicianship and devotion to the sounds of blues, R & B and rock ‘n roll. In fact, Muddy Waters called Wilson his favorite harmonica player and vocalist. “Muddy Waters was very good to me,” Wilson says. “He almost adopted me. I’ll never forget him.”
For Kim Wilson, the musical journey started in Goleta, California. At 17 he began playing the harmonica. His influences included Little Walter, George “Harmonica” Smith, Lazy Lester and James Cotton. At the same time, Wilson began singing and was deeply impacted by Bobby “Blue” Bland, B.B. King, Otis Rush, Jimmy Rodgers and Muddy Waters. In search of other musicians who shared his love of the blues, Wilson headed to Minneapolis. He stayed there for a year and a half, playing locally, before moving to the burgeoning music scene of Austin, Texas. It was there that he met Jimmie Vaughan and they founded the T-Birds in 1974. The band developed a reputation as a compelling live act and subsequently signed a record deal with CBS/Epic Records.
In 1979, The Fabulous Thunderbirds released their first self-titled album. Primarily blues influenced, it became a cult classic. “Things were wide open back then,” Wilson recalls. “There were hundreds of stages where bands could show what they had.”
In subsequent releases, the band started to incorporate more Cajun, rock ‘n roll and soul influences. The album “T-Bird Rhythm” marked a creative turning point for the group as it collaborated with noted producer Nick Lowe. In 1986, The Fabulous Thunderbirds reached a commercial peak with the album, “Tuff Enuff”. The single of the same title as well as the singles “Wrap It Up” and “Look At That”, all went top 40. The song, “Tuff Enuff” was featured in the film “Gung Ho” starring Michael Keaton.
For the remainder of the ’80s, the band continued to record and tour, and released the album, “Powerful Stuff”. Jimmie Vaughn left in 1989 but Wilson kept the group going, incorporating keyboards into the guitar-driven sound. Kim moved back to California in 1996, continuing to cultivate the T-Birds music.
“The thing about the T-Birds is that we can play both blues festival and rock venues,” Wilson comments. “We’re a diversified band now and everybody’s on the same page.”
The lineup:
- Kim Wilson – lead vocals, harmonica
- Johnny Moeller – guitar
- Bob Welsh – piano / guitar
- Rudy Albin – drums
- Steve Kirsty – bass
Johnny Moller (guitar)
Johnny Moeller’s developed into one of the genre’s most stunning and soulful six-string stylists with an uncanny ability to support heavy hitters. Although his most visible gig the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Moeller’s also the Severn Records house guitarist. In that role, he has lent artful licks to albums by stellar vocalists Darrell Nulisch and Lou Pride, harmonica ace Steve Guyger, and others. Johnny has three solo releases to his credit: 1996’s “The Return of the Funky Worm”, 2001’s “Johnny Blues Aggregation” and “Bloogaloo” in 2010.
Bob Welsh (piano / guitar)
Hailing from Covington, LA, Bob moved to the Bay Area in his late teens, where he’s been part of the roots music scene for almost twenty years. He started out in the Rusty Zinn band, and from there has backed up & toured with multiple luminaries all over the world, including Charlie Musselwhite, John Nemeth, Mark Hummel, and several others. He was nominated for the Grammy Award for “Best Traditional Blues Album” twice, both times as part of Elvin Bishop’s Big Fun Trio.
Rudy Albin (drums)
From Vancouver, B.C., Rudy Albin has had a long association with Jazz/Blues organist Jack McDuff, appearing on five of his records. Albin has also worked extensively with both the Glenn Miller and Tommy Dorsey Orchestras. More recently, he has been an A-list hired gun with the Brooklyn based Daptone “Retro Soul” Label, touring and recording with the Sugarman 3, Lee Fields, and The James Hunter 6.
Steve Kirsty (bass)
Born in Schenectady, NY; residing in Jersey City, NJ, Steven was born into a family of musicians & music teachers. He has performed throughout America, Spain, and Israel with numerous blues and jazz artists. Steven is also a saxophonist and piano tuner/technician. His playing is featured on albums such as Charles Cornell’s “Time Tales” & “Your Choice”, Nic Cacioppo’s “Time in Motion” & “Beginning to End”, and Vin Mott’s “Rogue Hunter” & “Country Blues”.
Composing with Americana eloquence, playing with uncontainable rock ‘n’ roll spirit, and singing with the soul of a seasoned troubadour, Ted Sablay writes the kind of tunes you can’t wait to share with friends and family or turn up all the way in the car.
The singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer balances gritty delivery and elevated songcraft, asserting himself as a dynamic presence. After spending the better part of the last two decades as a touring musician with The Killers, the Wisconsin-born and Las Vegas-based multi-hyphenate introduces himself as a solo artist on his independent full-length debut album, You’ll Be Back Here Soon, in 2022.
Growing up in the tiny town of Fond du Lac, he “disappeared into music.” Of half-Filipino and half-Irish descent, he was the youngest of six siblings and absorbed the musical inclinations of his older brothers and sisters. He went from watching their bootlegs of The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show to spinning seminal records from The Police, REM, U2, The Smiths, Guns N’ Roses, The Doors, and The Rolling Stones. When his anesthesiologist father retired, Ted moved to Las Vegas with his parents. He cut his teeth in numerous junior high and high school bands. Along the way, he met the future members of The Killers— Ronnie Vannucci, Jr., Dave Keuning, Mark Stoermer and Brandon Flowers—in the local scene.
Gearing up to tour in support of the platinum-selling chart-topping Sam’s Town, The Killers “needed someone who could play guitar and keyboards,” so Ted got the call...
Out of hundreds of shows, he joined the band for performances alongside the likes of Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Elton John and Bruce Springsteen and even at The White House for President Barack Obama. He has graced the stages of the most hallowed venues in the world such as Madison Square Garden, Staples Center, and Wembley Stadium in addition to over a dozen high-profile television appearances, including Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Kimmel! Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and more. During 2022, the band even chose him as its Musical Director on the road.
Throughout this whirlwind, Ted played on Sawdust and served as a recording engineer for a handful of tracks on Day And Age for The Killers. He contributed guitar and bass to select songs from Brandon’s solo album, The Desired Effect, and bass to Ronnie’s solo debut, Big Talk. He also co-wrote “We’re Going To Hell” by The [RED] Pack (The Killers, Bono, Jimmy Kimmel, Julia Roberts, Kristen Bell, DJ Khaled, Channing Tatum, Neil Patrick Harris, and Halsey). Not to mention, he held down lead guitar for “Dustland” as recorded by The Killers and Bruce Springsteen.
Michael Vango is a guitarist/singer based in Las Vegas, NV. His fingerstyle approach to acoustic guitar combined with his smooth, polished vocal style make him a hot commodity in the solo performer arena.
In addition to his solo acoustic shows, he co-wrote and starred in the critically acclaimed show, The Denim Brigade featured at the world famous Smith Center.
Born from a yearning to express their musical roots, the Las Vegas rock band Valley of Fire (VOF The Band) was formed by childhood friends guitarist Johnny Thornton (14) and drummer Adriano Santos (14). They started in elementary school practicing and playing shows for family and friends and at their school. As they honed their skills, they added Adriano's brother Rocco Santos (17) on bass guitar and triple threat Dante Santos (20) on lead vocals and keyboards.
The band is in the midst of writing and recording their first studio album. On April 7, 2023, they dropped their 2nd single, "All-American Vegas Girl," on all streaming services, and two explosive films for the single on YouTube, garnering over 100,000 plays in the first two weeks released.
Valley of Fire's (VOF The Band) strong social media following is kicking up the dust across the country and is being featured on the hit podcast Jam in the Van music show (jaminthevan.com) in 2023. Qualified in the TOP 5 and performed in the 2023 City of Henderson Battle of the Bands final battle! -
Native Las Vegan Chris Heers' songs have been featured in Movies, TV, XBox and Wii Country Dance Video Games, and on worldwide radio charting several top 100 songs in the USA and as high as number one in Europe. Chris is twice nominated for best Indie country album and for best Americana song "Leaning Into Barstow". Chris was previously named Las Vegas performer of the year and can be seen headlining upward of 250 shows per year in Las Vegas and throughout the Southwest as a solo, duo or with his full band.
"What Heers has that probably sets him off from the numerous contemporary country singers is a songwriting talent that is first calibre. Heers doesn’t just write songs about bars, cars, country roads and how bad he wants to party. Nope. He writes ballads, tales, stories in the Americana bent with a healthy capacity for clever lyrics." -Las Vegas Review Journal
South Dakota Native Seth Turner has been touring continually since his first album "Another Day in My Life" dropped in 2004. On the heels of his third album Seth continues to mesmerize audiences from Vegas to Dallas, performing as solo, duo or with his full band.
"Seth Turner’s voice has that sort of authenticity, full of nuance and longing and trepidacious hope. When Garth was still the new kid on the block, he had it right. Clint did, too. And Chris LeDoux, God bless him, just never did have it wrong as best I can tell. Seth Turner can give you pieces of every one of those guys... as malleable, powerful, and poignant a vocal as you’ll ever find anywhere. -Outlaw Magazine
Add in Kent "KR" Farrell (Ray Charles, Tammy Graham), a giant voice and one of the great living drummers; Karl Gottman legendary bass player who keeps the time and adds in some of the lower vocals. Karl is the senior but best looking member of HBC; Danny Sanderson on lead guitar and vocals who fronted the hit country band Stetzen and has shared the stage with greats such as Willie Nelson, brings one third of the original music to HBC and clearly wins best moustache; add in Pat Marlin on Keyboards formerly of the Mickey Finn show, and the great Mike Davoult on Steel Guitar for the larger venues.
Together they are "High Blue Cactus", a vocal powerhouse playing a variety show of their hit songs along with covers ranging from classic country to hard rock. "You will hear everything from Eagles to Buffett, Merle to Mettalica, Strait to Sinatra, Fleetwood Mac to Faron Young, Dwight to Dylan at a High Blue Cactus show. It is always unscripted and always off the chain fun"
THE CARS were easily one of the most popular bands from the late 70's and early 80's. Their first album is among the best debut records of all time, spawning chart-topping hits and songs that to this day are still played all over the radio. One could say they were a band ahead of their time, as they helped shape the 80's "new wave" sound which is hugely popular almost 40 years later as attest to their 2018 induction to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.
In 2001, Darryl (Ocasek) Battaglia was looking to put together a band that would appeal to the mass audience who loved the sound and total vibe of the 80's. He was inspired to form Candy-O, the ultimate tribute to the Cars. Rounding out the line-up is McCrea (Hawkes) Adams on keyboards and vocals, Brenton (Orr) Worthy on bass and vocals, Steven (Easton) Dust on guitar and Bob (Robinson) Duda on drums.
Covering all of the Cars’ radio hits as well as some popular album cuts, Candy-O captures the terminal cool of the Cars live performance in all aspects, all live, with no vocal or music sampling whatsoever. The band has consistently amazed and entertained crowds whenever and wherever they hit the stage. So, catch a ride to the era that was all about fun and enjoy the sound and vision of the 80’s created by Candy-O!
