Antonio Hernandez (Data Structures)
Maria Shpurik (Memory and Memory Improvement)
Kianoush (Computer Architecture)
How was Antonio Hernandez? His pros and cons? And his grading ?
Cons:
So one con is that he takes a long time to grade assignments. This is likely due to a a lack of TA.
Another is that he is fairly soft spoken with a fairly heavy Spanish accent. Its not really a Con, but it is something to keep in mind if you have hearing issues, or trouble understanding accents.
For pros:
In data structures, he offers a great deal of information as far as different cases and when to use something vs when to use another thing. He provides a great deal of functional examples as well and you’ll end up with a very solid code base in Java.
Another pro is that his grading criteria is extremely straightforward and most assignments are fairly easy as they are based on in class examples that he discusses. His tests are a bit tricky for me but im just shit at programming exams tbh. Most are just questions pertaining to time complexity of algorithms, as well as identifying data structures/algorithms from psudo code.
He also provides most of the framework for the assignments and all you have to do is implement the program based on what he is asking for. For example he may ask you to implement a program that stores data from a file to a doubly linked list. He will provide the files for you to edit and all that is necessary is to fill out the methods for the Linked List class and Node class as per the specification. However if you stray from the spec he will deduct points (idk why you would though. Thats just making things harder lmao)
Conclusion: Honestly the only major gripe is that he takes a whole to grade assignments. Honestly though you won’t go wrong with him, and I genuinely I could take him again for future classes. Definitely one of the better profs for Comp Sci at FIU imo, only one I’ve had that is “better” is Kianoush but just because he curves his grades like a mad lad.
Damn dude thanks so much for the reply!
No problem!
You had a good experience with Shpurik? I had her this semester for Social Psychology and although the actual content of the class was great I didn’t enjoy her style. I do think her class is structured in a way that’s hard to fail unless you’re just not showing up to class, but her teaching style annoyed me at times.
Honestly, I’ve had far worse professors. I mean I’ve definitely had better but honestly she’s a safe pick. Compared to a lot of the computer science professors its night and day lmao.
Example: a comp sci professor (wont name them) created a midterm that the average grade was a 32… half the class dropped. He then failed to teach the subject matter for the next assignment and proceeded to write up half of the remaining students for cheating when they decided to look online for help on how to structure the program.
Kevin Boutsen, aka the GOAT.
Honorable mentions: Ju Sun, Benjamin Boesl, Julian Edwards, Ted Draghici, Fiorella Terenzi, Dr. Chapagain, and more.
+1 for Boutsen, Sun, and Boesl
I has fiorella terenzi as my professor … she was okay
Did you have her for physics? I am thinking of taking her...
Richard Whittaker - Fundamentals of Modeling and Simulation .
Madame Francois- French 1
Madame Francois is amazing. It’s clear she really cares about her students.
Yes , she do in the class , I just finish this week .
Christy Charters (COP 2210)
Does she assign alot of work? How is the class like? Taking her in spring
It’s adequate for a programming class. All good programming classes have a lot of work so I would say yes she assigns a lot of work.
Okay then, appreciate it
Lindsey Maxwell for History of American Conservatism
Sergio Pisano (COP 4703)
Martá Gierczyk - ENC 3213 Technical Writing She's wonderfully nice and understanding and really easy going. Tries to facilitate discussion which I really love
Oleg Asipchuk - MAC 2311 Calculus 1 Really sweet and understanding, lots of opportunity for extra credit. Damn near impossible to fail the class. He's really passionate about math and has definitely helped grow the wick of love that I have for math! I advise taking his class if you do and don't care about math since
He's a good professor so you'll learn
If you don't care about math it's easy to pass Win win!
Martá Gierczyk is a saint, I loved her class.
I’ll keep an eye out for Asipchuk when I retake Calc. Thanks!
Not this semester but Alvin Chiang somehow made econ fun, so I'm nominating him
