Biography

  • Veronica Randy Crawford (born 18 February 1952) is American singer from Macon, Georgia, US. Though she specializes in American forms of music such as Jazz and R&B, her career in the States fairs pale in comparison to her success in Europe. Crawfords’ idiosyncratic vocal style has landed her positive recognition.

Crawford started her career performing at various clubs both regionally and internationally, but hit the big time in New York City where she sang regularly with jazz legends Cannonball Adderley and George Benson. After establishing her presence within the jazz community she was ready to branch out as a solo artist. Her debut single “Knock On Wood”/ “If You Say the Word” was released in 1972 through Columbia Records. Though Crawford was pursuing her solo career this did not stop her from making guest appearances. In 1975 she contributed vocals to Adderley’s album “Big Man: The Legend Of John Henry” and in 1977 she worked on the Fred Wesley & The Horny Horns album “A Blow For Me, A Toot To You”.

Crawford’s career was in no way limited to the Jazz genre. In 1978 she provided vocals for Steve Hackkett’s (ex-guitarist of Genesis) album “Please Don’t Touch”, specifically on the track “Hoping Love Will Last”. In 1979 she put out one of her most memorable works to date, the single “Street Life”, on which she collaborated with the Crusaders. The song was a transatlantic hit and was featured in the Burt Reynolds film “Sharky’s Machine”. She re-recorded a special version of the song in 1997 for Quentin Tarantino’s critically acclaimed film “Jackie Brown”. Crawford’s hard work really started to pay off and in 1980 she was awarded ‘Most Outstanding Performer” at the Tokyo Music Festival (yet another attestant to her rich idiosyncratic style).

Crawford continued to release material throughout the early 80s, many of them now considered classics: “One Day I’ll Fly Away”, “You Might Need Somebody”, and “Rainy Night In Georgia”. Her 1981 album “Secret Combination” proved to be a giant hit in the UK staying on the charts for 60 weeks straight.

Later on in the 80s her career began to fall into obscurity; however she had a strong return in the 90s with her album “Naked and True”. It featured a stellar cast of musicians such as George Benson, Fred Wesley, and Funkadelic members Bootsy Collins (bass) and Bernie Worrell (synths).

In 2001 she released her 14th LP “Play Mode” and from 2006 to 2012 she recorded three well received albums with Joe Sample: “Feeling Good”, “No Regrets”, and “Live”.

  • Randy Crawford

Randy Crawford is easily one of the best soul singers to emerge in the 70's firmly making her stamp on the music industry. Immediately 'Street Life', 'One Day I'll Fly Away' and 'You Might Need Somebody' are all songs that spring to mind when thinking of this American starlet and rightly so. She has the ability to work a crowd like no other whether it be during her disco dance hits or jazz ballads.

Her vocals are some of the most easily recognisable with her ability to captivate her listeners through emotion and heartache, she not only gained success as a solo performer but also fronted band The Crusaders for a short period of time.

She remains active in the music industry after recently re-teaming with The Crusaders keyboard player Joe Sample for various albums still allowing us to enjoy her sweet voice. Crawford to this day is still able to perform with as much energy as if it were her first ever performance.

She often performs with Joe Sample continuing to treat us to her most famous tracks whilst still remaining loyal to her soulful roots displaying just why she is truly one of a kind. Her ability to cast a spell over her audience is just spine-tingling only confirming that she has successfully earned her place at the top.

  • Randy Crawford is in the simplest way of explaining it, an absolute hit maker. Not only can she pen hits, but also she can perform them all so very well. Despite being from the U.S.A, she has had more success in Europe than in the United States, where she has not yet entered the charts as an artist in her own right. She has managed many top five hits in the UK, lets not forget her 1980 number 2 hit, “One Day I’ll Fly Away”, which of course demonstrates such musicality and poise in her performance which tonight, blows the crowd away. It is a very adoring English crowd; all very excited for this gig which I’m sure will be a memorable one! There is no denying this powerhouse’s technical ability with her impressive range, and her ornamentation which seems to be everywhere throughout the set. It is tasteful, and not too “in your face”, just the correct amount. “Give Me the Night” is a memorable moment between audience and artist with a chorus of sing alongs and everyone dancing like there is no tomorrow. Nice one Randy Crawford!

  • Technic:

The band/ vocal mix was bad. Her voice was to weak.

She was sitting allmost all the time. Her voice was weak. A Face microphone close to her mouth would be better (maybe). She was holding the micro too far away. But the mixing with the band was not good. weak sound.

Time: The singing time was only! abt 65 Minutes. Way to little for 80 US Dollars!! I can rate this concert only very low!
