* Death of former SriLankan Airlines official whose body found near the Independence Square suspected suicide
Fri, Jun 12, 2020, 11:45 pm SL Time, ColomboPage News Desk, Sri Lanka.

June 12, Colombo: The death of a man whose body was found near the Independence Square this morning has been temporarily ruled as a suicide.

The body found with gunshot wounds has been identified as 63-year-old Rajeewa Prakash Jayaweera, a former Sri Lankan Airlines Senior Official, the Police Media Unit confirmed.

Police have said that they believe he has committed suicide.

The police have found a letter purported to be a suicide note and a .22 caliber pistol hanging from his neck. He has reportedly written the letter to his brother.

Jayaweera who was a former Senior Executive at SriLankan Airlines and also a freelance writer to newspapers and a website, has written on a wide range of topics including corruption at the national carrier.

Colombo Telegraph Editor Uvindu Kurukulasuriya in a Facebook post said he has read the 3-page suicide note written by Rajeewa Jayaweera and it seems the note is genuine.

In the note, Jayaweera has said that he had donated Rs. half a million to the COVID Fund, deposited Rs. 1 million in servant’s account and illegally purchased the firearm for Rs 151,500. He had expressed regret over breaking the law to purchase the firearm.

The Police Spokesperson SP Jaliya Senaratne said although preliminary investigations reveal the death to be a suicide, a conclusion can only be reached after the Magistrate’s Inquiry is complete. The Police are currently awaiting the post-mortem report of the body.
