"The Fishin' Hole" by Everett Sloane, Earle Hagen and Herbert Spencer
Well, now, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,
What a great place to rest your bones and mighty fine for skippin' stones,
Whether it's hot, whether it's cool, oh what a spot for whistlin' like a fool.
What a fine day to take a stroll and wander by The Fishin' Hole,
We'll have no need to call the roll when we get to The Fishin' Hole,
If we don't hook a perch or bass, we'll cool our toes in dewy grass,
Hangin' around, takin' our ease, watchin' that hound a-scratchin' at his fleas.
Come on, take down your fishin' pole and meet me at The Fishin' Hole,

We may not get a bite all day, but don't you rush away.
You'll feel fresh as a lemonade, a-settin' in the shade.
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.
There'll be you, me, and Old Dog Trey, to doodle time away.
Or else pull up a weed to chaw, and maybe set and jaw.
I can't think of a better way to pass the time o' day.
The small town of Mayberry, North Carolina, was the setting of this highly successful homespun situation comedy. Sheriff Andy Taylor was a widower with a young son, Opie. They lived with Andy's Aunt Bee, a combination housekeeper and foster mother for Opie. Andy's deputy was his cousin Barney Fife, the most inept, hypertense deputy sheriff ever seen on television. The tone of the show was very gentle, giving Andy the opportunity to state and practice his understanding philosophical outlook on life. Since there was practically no crime in Mayberry, the stories revolved mostly around the personal relationships of its citizens.
Two of the show's regulars graduated to series of their own. The first was Jim Nabors. He had become a member of the cast in the spring of 1973 in the role of Gomer Pyle, the naive, lovable gas station attendant at Wally's filling station. After a year and a half he left to join the marines and become Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. Co-star Don Knotts left the show in 1965 for his own variety series, The Don Knotts Show. Among the other regulars, Andy's original girlfriend, druggist Ellie Walker, was seen only during the first season, and for the following three years Andy had no regular romantic interest. Schoolteacher Helen Crump filled the void in 1964, and when Andy Griffith decided to quit the show in 1968, she also provided his means of escape. On the first episode of Mayberry R.F.D., the successor to The Andy Griffith Show, Andy and Helen married and moved away, leaving the supporting cast to carry on with a new star, Ken Berry, in the role of Sam Jones--another widower with a young son.
Daytime reruns of this series, as well as some syndicated versions, were titled Andy of Mayberry. CBS aired weekday daytime reruns from October 1964 to September 1970 with the title reverting to The Andy Griffith Show when the prime-time version left the air. A nostalgic reunion of the series' original cast--the made-for-TV film "Return to Mayberry"--aired in April 1986 and was the highest-rated movie of the entire 1985-1986 season.
Series summary from The Complete Directory to Prime Time Network and Cable TV Shows: 1946-Present
Did You Know?
Barney Fife kept one bullet in his shirt pocket.
Barney Fife was Andy Taylor's cousin.
The character of Warren Ferguson (played by Jack Burns) was brought in to replace Barney Fife after Don Knotts left the show. Warren was referred to on occasion as Floyd the Barber's nephew.
After Floyd left the show, his barbershop became Emmit's Fixit Shop.
The scripts used during Jack Burns' time on the show as Deputy Warren Ferguson were originally written for Don Knotts' Barney Fife.
The only other person that Barney Fife was interested in, besides Thelma Lou, was a waitress named Juanita. She is never shown, but Barney has conversations with her on the phone.
Thelma Lou's last name was never mentioned.
Mayberry, North Carolina is based on Mt. Airy, North Carolina, 'Griffith, Andy' 's birthplace.
The final season of the show was pretty much a set up for its replacement, "Mayberry R.F.D." (1968)
The show was shot on the same set as Atlanta from Gone With the Wind (1939) , if you were to walk out of the courthouse and look to the right at the end of the street, you can see the old Atlanta train station in many episodes.
Don Knotts left the show in 1965 after signing a two picture deal with Universal Pictures. He made guest appearances after that. He was replaced by 'Jack Burns' , who played Deputy Warren Ferguson
Sheriff Andy Taylor did not wear a hat or a tie with his uniform, nor did he ever carry a gun.
The characters of Andy, Aunt Bea and Opie originally debuted on an episode of the "Make Room for Daddy" (1953) (The Danny Thomas Show).
Aunt Bee was originally from Morgantown, West Virginia
Juanita is the mayor's daughter, and appeared in "Mayberry Goes Hollywood", Episode #13, where she sang, "Flow Gently Sweet Afton"
Sheriff Taylor did not routinely appear wearing a necktie or a sidearm. In several episodes, he wears a necktie or a sidearm in special circumstances, such as receiving a VIP for the Town of Mayberry, or tracking an escaped convict reported to be in the vicinity of Mayberry. He rarely was shown smoking, but did so in a couple of episodes.
When Howard McNear left the show after years of declining health, his departure was explained by having Floyd sell the barbershop and moving away to be with his daughter.
The series ended while still at the top of the Nielsen's Ratings, one of only three shows to have done so, along with "I Love Lucy" (1951) and "Seinfeld" (1990).
When Don Knotts left the show, his absence was explained by having Barney move to Raleigh, North Carolina to join their police department.

No Time for Sergeants (1958)
Andy Griffith burst to stardom with this surprisingly funny film adaptation of the Broadway comedy
by, of all people, Ira Levin of Rosemary's Baby fame). Griffith plays a hillbilly who is drafted into
the army where, among other things, he has to wear shoes regularly for the first time. Griffith brings
an engaging glee to the role of this likable bumpkin, whose happy-go-lucky demeanor is impervious
to insult. Ask him to clean the latrines and he rigs the toilet seats to stand up and salute. The film
follows him through basic training and into the paratroops, where he becomes an unlikely hero. A
solid supporting cast includes Griffith's future sidekick, Don Knotts; Nick Adams; and, most
notably, the hilariously sullen Myron McCormick.

Bullet, the official newsletter of The Andy Griffith Show Rerun Watchers Club. Each column centers
on one episode from the popular television series, The Andy Griffith Show. Brower researches each

The Andy Griffith Story : An Illustrated Biography
As a long-time Andy Griffith fan, I was happy to see the man's entire career fully represented and
not just the years that he spent on his 60's television show. Collins goes to great lengths to assure
that all areas of Andy's career are covered, including his work in television, theater, music, drama,
and motion pictures. The book also describes some of the personal and physical hurdles that Griffith
had to overcome, as well as revealing some fascinating little-known facts. Who knew that early in
his career, Andy planned on becoming a minister? Or that his work in the theater was so extensive?
All-in-all, an excellent in-depth look at one of the most versatile entertainers of our time, and I
would highly recommend it to any admirer of Griffith's work.

I Love To Tell The Story: 25 Timeless Hymns
You've probably seen a slightly different version of this best selling album being sold on TV
and in magazines under the title Precious Memories.
Among the 25 inspirational songs (some as medleys on a total of 14 tracks)

"Amazing Grace," "Wayfaring Stranger," "How Great Thou Art," "Will the Circle Be Unbroken","
Precious Memories," "When the Saints Go Marching in" and "The Old Rugged Cross."
These are some of Andy Griffith's favorite old-time hymns, and, as he writes in the album's liner
notes, "I've known them as long as I can remember and have sung them at many churches and
gatherings." Enjoy singing along with Andy, and just close your eyes (unless, of course, you're
playing the album while driving) and pretend you're at All Souls Church in Mayberry.
