The Race to Witch Mountain is inspired by two previous films, but it is not an outright copy or sequel of either. There is little doubt that it is a star vehicle for Dwayne Johnson playing the character of Jack Bruno, a Vegas cab driver. He is an ex-con who wants to make a clean living, but there are elements from his past still haunting him. One day he finds two kids in his cab who say they came in from `outside'. Little by little (and after an exciting car chase) he finds they are aliens chased by an alien hunter (from the military of the kids' planet) and of course, FBI types in big SUVs. But he is determined to deliver the kids to their spacecraft and enlists the help of a woman specialist. Cue a little hint of a romance, well within PG levels.
The film offers plenty of excitement and even humor. There is not one word of profanity and despite several gunfights, no blood on show. The blu-ray perfectly showcases the desert landscapes of the area as well as the dazzling lights of Las Vegas. Some night scenes have challenged the encoding process, but that is insignificant. The soundtrack is literally a blast from the first second. The UFO convention adds a neat touch to the overall theme of the movie. I wonder whether the dog was really necessary, except to add some light moments. The moviemakers never really answer the question whether the kids are actually humanoid or take on some other form in their `native' planet, but they do show some remarkable powers. Some of these special effects are so passé now, but that does not affect the overall wow factor of the movie.
Taken as a whole, the film provides wholesome family entertainment. There are plot holes and loose ends, but in a film like this, that is given. What matters is that it is an enjoyable story for both kids and adults. If you like car chases and alien stories, this is an enjoyable, if non-intellectual ride. Johnson has truly come of age with this movie. He won't win any Oscars for his work here, but he shows promise. More challenging roles are sure to come his way.
I also watched the Digital Copy of the movie on my PC and it offers a very good SD picture, with only a very few blemishes. The soundtrack sounded great through my headphones. I have not sampled the DVD yet, but it should measure up to typical Disney DVD standards.
Disney deserves plaudits for their blu-ray+DVD+Digital Copy strategy. It has got the pricing almost right, with the two-disc DVD edition costing the same as the above mentioned triple pack. Picking up the blu-ray version is a no-brainer regardless of whether you have a blu-ray player or not. Add the Digital Copy, which you can play on your PC or iPod Touch, and you have a winner on your hands. Other studios are already copying it, if one needs any further proof of Disney's success.

" Wo sind wir hier? " - " Da lang! " - " Hey, ich bin Taxifahrer, hab` schon `ne Menge Sachen erlebt, die............
unheimlich waren! Bloß weg hier!! "
Und so: Trockene Sprüche, kernige Darsteller, genügend Fantasie und das alles bunt, grell und keinesfalls
dämlich. Ein superfeines Abenteuer halt.

Die Zukunft der Erde ist nur eine Taxifahrt entfernt, muss Jack Bruno erkennen,
der genau diesen Job in Las Vegas erledigt. Und nun wird er widerwillig zum Held,
als die Zwillinge Sara und Seth in sein Auto springen?,......na ja nein, sie sind einfach da.
Und sie besitzen noch ganz andere Fähigkeiten, werden deshalb von komischen Gestalten verfolgt.

Für mich ist dieser Film eine wirklich famose Disney- Version von " Der Tag, an dem die Erde stillstand " ,
Der gute Dwayne Johnson darf sich auch hier von seiner lustigen Seite zeigen,- und das Motto: Die Aliens
sind auf der Erde gelandet, werden gejagt und müssen zurück zum Mutterschiff wird hier so richtig schön
im begeisternden Disney- Stil dargeboten. Die Aliens sind süße Kinder, die Bösen zwar böse, doch so richtig töten
tut man hier natürlich nicht. Ja okay, die Handlung ist zwar einfach gestrickt, kommt jedoch sehr geradlinig daher.
Und mitten im Starwars- Getümmel.....".... Mann, wo haste denn dass Kostüm her? Sieht ja irre aus! "
DIE JAGD ZUM MAGISCHEN BERG- die Verfolgungsjagd durch die Wüste von Nevada bietet dem Trio allerlei
Gelegenheit, sich kennenzulernen,.....wobei mir besonders die Passagen Spaß bereiten, in denen die Kids dem
unfreiwilligen Fahrer ihre übernatürlichen Fähigkeiten präsentieren. Die Action- Szenen des jugendfreien Filmchens,
in den man auch jüngeren Nachwuchs entführen kann, sind wohl dosiert, geschickt geschnitten und natürlich
unblutig- hier holt man sich höchstens eine Schramme.
Und sehr erfreulich finde ich, dass die Balance von Komik, Spannung und familienfreundlicher Unterhaltung
bis zum Ende durchgehalten wird.
" Sie sind ein guter Mensch, Jack. " Na, das mein` ich aber auch.
