The series premiere about medical pioneers focuses on Robert, a domineering, showman surgeon who is almost as brilliant as he thinks he is. But after a botched amputation, Robert is put under pressure by royal physician Dr. Hendrick. So John, a drug-addled dentist who is trying to create the world's first anesthetic, convinces Robert to use potentially lethal ether in a prestigious and pioneering operation.
Caroline bags an invitation to meet her hero, Charles Dickens. William finds himself in an awkward position when he exaggerates how much of a fan he is, but he hasn't read a single page of Dickens' work. An excruciating evening ensues when William escorts Caroline to a dinner party at Dickens' house.
William has a patient, Harold, with extreme monomania-he seems sane other than his fervent belief that he will be seized by spies at any moment and put on trial for being a French noble. With John, Robert and Caroline's help, William concocts a daring plan to cure Harold of his delusion by staging a trial and "acquitting" him.
William has a bladder stone and needs Robert to perform a grim genital operation on him. William has the unenviable choice of excruciating pain or taking John's potentially lethal new chloroform drug during surgery. In her quest to expand her medical knowledge, Caroline arranges for herself and William to meet Llantha Kapoor, a famous hypnotist.
For the first time since losing his wife, John falls in love with Nicola Bell from the drugstore. But their whirlwind romance is thrown into jeopardy when Nicola reveals she is promised to another man, the wealthy Lord Thornycroft. Robert has a seemingly unsolvable case, the Bishop of Lambeth needs his appendix removed or he will die, but he won't agree to pain relief or surgery.
In the season finale, William and Caroline's affair intensifies and Caroline asks him to run away with her. Meanwhile, Robert's rival Patrice DuPont is due to perform surgery on a very prestigious patient-Dr. Hendrick himself.

Jan 17, 2021I run a Victorian podcast, called the Devil's Dinner Hour and I found this by chance while researching Dr. Robert Liston. I binged the entire show, am watching it now, for the second time. It's darkly funny with great acting. The stories in each episode are actually based on actual cases that Liston encountered. They even got his bravado, apron and tools correct. I was absolutely crushed to find out that the show was cancelled after it's first season. Figures that an actually funny, excellently written show with some semblance of historical accuracy would be cancelled. I wish they would bring it back. It is superb- and I'm a tough audience when it comes to anything about the Victorian Era. Watch it, you will not regret it!!!

Mar 17, 2018Absolutely hilarious. Brilliantly written characters, and great gory special effects. The comedy is always spot-on, and I do hope that there'll be another series in the future.

Jan 21, 2018Brilliantly funny show about medical people in the mid Victorian era. Reminiscent of Blackadder. Ensemble cast shine.
