Do you guys remember how ps2 horror games all had this really distinct feel to them? Its hard to explain, but I can't find any games after ps2 that gives me the same feeling. What I loved about them was how engaging they were. The puzzles in some of these games are really fun and satisfying to solve(Silent hill 3 being my favorite). These days it just seems to be mostly hide and seek style gameplay, trial and error, wack jump scares and basic cliche storylines.I dont know if this is nostalgia talking, but rule of rose story was really unique and have really deep themes.Yea the combat was trash, but you kept playing because of the puzzles and story. The Fatal frame games had great gameplay and encourage exploring. It was fun finding items and fighting enemies to level up your camera also each enemy was unique and you have to apply different tactics to deal with each one. I didnt really like Clock Tower 3 because of how annoying it was to solve puzzles. The enemy randomly chases you while youre trying to figure out how to proceed and get to the next level. The first couple of chase's are pretty scary, but after that it gets repetitive because you have to go out of your way to hide every single time, but ill still rather play that then stuff these days. I think hunting ground did a good job of this kinda of gameplay by giving you a bigger space to run and find hiding places plus you have way more options to use for enemies. Each enemy had a crazy back story as well. One thing I really like about hunting ground is how attached you get to the character. You want to protect her and you feel for her.If you lose she basically ends up raped in some cases and who wants to be responsible for that? I dont find myself caring for any of the protagonist these days. Most of it is in first person and the mc is slient. Can't really care for someone you cant see or hear( I know its supposed to be self insert but still).Kuon had rpg elements in it which is pretty rare in survival horror.I haven't played Resident Evil 7 yet,but I heard good things so im not saying every single game these days are bad,but its hard to find something that has love and care like these older games. What are some of your favorite horror games and what do you like about them?
TLDR:I love ps2 horror games.
Silent Hill 2 and 3. Play them again on PS2 - because I and MANY other people will tell you that you experienced them in the worst way possible. The HD Collection is a buggy, awful mess with unfitting new voices and broken lighting and shadows.
Resident Evil comes to mind - just about any game of the series, really. Can't go wrong with RE1-3 on PS1 and RE4 on PS2.
There's also the Siren series.
Play Fatal Frame series(aka Project Zero in Europe). Especially Fatal Frame 2 Crimson Butterfly. I've yet to find horror game as good as this. Never expected this series to be this good. Fatal Frame 4 is only on Wii tho and you need translation since it was never released outside of Japan but I managed to complete it without Wiilot.
to be honest, no games have scared me like Fatal Frame scared me. Amnesia got close, but the Resi games never did it for me and games like Outlast were honestly too comical for me to actually get immersed and feel scared
Outlast feels so flat and lifeless to me for some reason.Everything is tiral and error and exploring is boring.Wow I found a battery in the only open bathroom stall guess Ill make a left in this narrow hallway since its the only other door here. Oops just scare.
The first 2 chapters were pretty good but I have to say that games quality dipped after every chapter. It was so weird since the first chapter came out swinging. If only the rest of the bosses were as scary as the first dude.
