Nicholas always gave away presents at night, and during one of those evenings, he dropped gold down the chimney of a merchant who fell into poverty, knowing that his family would never accept presents voluntarily. Instead, those gifts fell straight into his daughters’ stockings.
When the merchant’s kids discovered the present the following day, they were filled with so much happiness. Soon after that, all the other kids in the village developed the habit of hanging socks near the fireplace, hoping to get gifts from St. Nicholas. So yes, Santa is not merely a Chritsmas representation but a symbol of gift-giving and making wishes come true.
So, where exactly does Santa live? Some say that he lives in a cozy house in the North Pole. Others say that Santa, together with his elves and flying reindeer, live in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland. And it seems like Lapland is the real deal! It’s said that Santa built a village in Rovaniemi and named it “Santa’s official North Pole residence.”
The Santa Claus Village officially opened in 1965, making Lapland a grand tourist destination welcoming over half a million visitors each year. The holiday spirit is there all year round! People can take selfies with Santa, ride a husky or reindeer sled, or visit the Santa post office and send postcards to your friends straight from Santa’s home.
