Alabama cop killed, woman wounded in ‘ambush’ shooting, authorities say

A police officer was killed and his significant other wounded in an early morning “ambush” shooting Tuesday in Alabama, authorities said.

Selma Police Officer Marquis Moorer was fatally shot while on duty as he returned home to get a bite to eat at the apartment complex where he lived, Dallas County District Attorney Michael Jackson said.

“This was an ambush,” Jackson told The Post Tuesday. “He came home to eat and he was there with his wife or girlfriend and somebody on the outside came up and shot him and shot her.”

Moorer, who was shot inside his apartment, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman with him, whose identity wasn’t immediately released, was taken to a hospital, but her condition was unclear, Jackson said.

The gunfire erupted at about 4 a.m. at Selma Square Apartments, WSFA reported. No arrests had been made as of early Tuesday, Jackson said.

“We expect the suspect or suspects to be caught very quickly,” the district attorney said. “These kinds of killings help destroy the community. The gunslingers need to understand that their mothers, sisters and brothers live here. This kind of violence needs to stop.”

City officials planned to hold a press conference on the shooting at 10 a.m., WSFA reported. Jackson said he had no information to provide regarding a motive or a description of a possible suspect or suspects.

“Everybody said he was a very good officer who took his job very seriously,” Jackson said of Moorer.

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said the officer was struck by gunshots fired from outside his residence during his lunch break.

“Once again, one of Alabama’s law enforcement heroes has been tragically struck down,” Marshall said in a statement. “Every day, officers routinely risk their lives simply by putting on their uniforms and performing their duties to protect fellow citizens. We must honor them and never take for granted the sacrifices they make on our behalf.”

Central Alabama CrimeStoppers has announced a $2,500 reward for information leading to a break in the case, WSFA reported.
