Stevens' classic steakhouse in north suburban Gurnee has all the trappings of a traditional family owned and operated restaurant from its stylish white tablecloth setting to its martini and wine lists to the rarely seen Beef Wellington on its menu. Located at 401 North Riverside...Drive, at the northeast corner of Route 21 or Milwaukee Avenue and Washington Street, in Riverside Plaza, it is open from 4 to 8 Tuesday and Saturday and 11 to 8 on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. It is widely known for its aged steaks and chops and freshest seafood. Can anyone explain why the best steakhouses also showcase the best seafood while the best seafood restaurants don't usually bother with steaks? No matter, Stevens does it as well as anyone. My wife and I started with shrimp cocktail, scallops, crab brie soup and Caesar salad with romaine, parmesan, Cajun croutons and anchovies. For an entree, my wife chose Branzino, a delicious and meaty Mediterranean sea bass with citrus dill broth, spinach, tomato and toasted hazelnut with asparagus and au gratin potatoes. I couldn't resist the Beef Wellington, an eight-ounce filet mignon in a puff pastry with duxelles sauce. With a baked potato and mushrooms and onions. For dessert, we shared slices of carrot cake and portions of banana pudding. We're just beginning to realize how many quality restaurants are located in the far northern and northwest suburbs.More

Arrived for a 10 minutes early for our reservation. Hostess said it be a bit of a wait. Five minutes past our reservation we were approached & told it be another 5 to 10 minutes, which it was. Very appreciative of being approached vs me...asking when we’d be seated. At the end of the meal we were given a free dessert for our understanding of the situation. A ten minute wait past our reservation time isn’t outrageous. The restaurant handled everything professionally & courteously too! Food & service were very good too!More

Disappointing. Do not order the lamb chops. I ordered them prepared medium rare. They tasted like they were grilled sometime earlier in the day, cold, smothered in a sauce as if to hide any flavor of the lamb. And served with steamed spinach. In theory...garlic spinach. $34 entree. Sad. I have always counted on Steven’s for an excellent meal. Won’t be coming back any time soon.More

Another great time at Stevens’. Sat on patio. Outstanding service. Got 3 appetizer special which was unbelievable. Mussels in marina sauce were very good. Good sized fresh mussels - Lots to share. Buffalo cauliflower was spicy and good. The best was the stack of crab...meat with avocado plus other stuff served with chips. Good wine. Delicious lemon drop martini. Hot bread is soft. Stevens’ service is top notch.More

We had a group of 6 celebrating a birthday and opted to try Stevens'. Almost everyone had the filet and everyone said it was very good. I opted to have the appetizer lobster mac & cheese as my entree - it was ok, not great....The crab brie soup was also highly rated by our group. This place is in a strip mall, but the inside is decorated like a supper club. Service was good and we had someone from management check in on us several times during our dinner.More

Impeccable staff…can’t praise them all enough. Started out with water and bread. Bread was soft and tasty. My crab brie soup was amazing. Everything else just missed the mark. My husband had two croutons in his Caesar salad. Beet salad was standard fair. Wines were...nothing special. Meats were dry. My cherry sauce made it palatable. We expected amazing and it missed the mark. I wouldn’t go out of my way to return…especially with the high prices.More

Stevens' Steakhouse in Gurnee is an old school style, family-ish steakhouse with a solid, modestly priced menu and a bar stocked with call brands and some mid-tier bottles.

My wife and I tried this Gurnee steakhouse quite hopeful that it would be decent. We weren't even expecting great, or even really, really good. We just wanted a decent steak. Our steaks arrived, cooked as we had requested, and we had a bite. Then...another, just to be sure. We flagged down the waiter and told him that they hadn't seasoned the steak. At all. Not even salt. The waiter gave me a blank stare and told me that there was salt and pepper on the table for seasoning. I asked him to get me a manager. He got me one of the owners. I told the owner that the steak was completely unseasoned - bland, not salted, etc. He looked at me incredulously. "Of course not!" he said. I asked him a specific question - "Are you telling me that all you do to a steak or a piece of meat is cook it? You put absolutely no seasoning on it at all?" He responded. "Yes", he said, looking at me like there was no other way he'd ever heard of to serve a steak. So if you merely want someone to cook you a hunk of meat, to take no time or care in its seasoning or service, this is the place for you. If, however, you prefer taste and the artistry of a real chef, you need to go elsewhere.More

A colleague and I were staying in the Waukegan area and turned to Tripadvisor and Yelp for advice for a decent place to eat. Stevens' was tops on both. No offense to Gurnee, but I'm from Boston and I certainly didn't expect the high level...of food and service that Stevens' provided. Our server, I forget his name, was smart and classy. I had a few questions about some sauces and he offered to bring a sample of each one for me to try. I ended up ordering my steak with one of the sauces. This was one of the best steaks I've had in my life (I've eaten in Morton's, Fleming's, Abe & Louie's, etc.) It was seasoned fantastically and cooked to medium perfection - not too rare, not over done. I don't drink but my colleagues were very happy with the beer choices and the knowledge of the server was impressive on fine beer as well. The atmosphere is refined and elegant inside. Don't let the outside fool you. This is a beautiful place with great food and great staff. I don't anticipate visiting Gurnee again but, if you do, please check out Stevens', they deserve the business.More

Our son graduated Basic Traing at Great Lakes and we wanted to take him some where nice for dinner. This is where you want to go. We had no reservations and it was full, but the manager got us a table with our Sailor immediately,...I was impressed. It is a nice place and the food was great, with a desert on the house for our new Sailor. We ordered NY strips and I am a self proclaimed steak guy from way back. The steak was excellent, thick, juicy, and almost melted in my mouth! The loaded mashed potatoes was large and generously topped with everything it should have. We also had fried calamari that was obviously fresh and breaded in house with lots of legs and whole pieces. All the food, service, and drinks were excellent. The manager and other patrons were top notch. This is the place you want to take your new Sailor, you’ll be happy you did, we were. Watch the GPS though, it led us to the entrance of a highway, it is in a plaza on a NE corner and you can see the name pretty easily from the road. This is the place you are looking fo. 😉More

Family birthday celebration accentuated with great meals. Food was cooked to perfection and was a fair value for the quality delivered. Only negatives were the ambient noise, which was too loud for meaningful dinner conversation and service, which was not matching the food quality. We...ordered wine before our food was delivered and did not get served the wine until we were half way through our meals. The meat was the best we have eaten this side of Omaha. Compared with Wildfire, Eddie Merlots, et al, Stevens meat was of much higher quality, better prepared and at a more reasonable price.More
