Why Do Scammers Use WhatsApp and Google Chat to Message Victims?

Before many people entered the world of online dating and networking, they never heard of Google Chat or WhatsApp. Many people even wonder if Google Chat is a dating app. But, in reality, Google Chat is a messaging app. Although most of the activity on the platform is legitimate, many scammers take to the platform to communicate with people they are trying to scam. Because of this, many fake accounts on dating apps will move the conversation to this platform. In this article, you’ll learn why scammers use Google Chat, and the types of scams to watch out for. Don’t forget, Social Catfish can help you find scammers on WhatsApp and Google Chat.

Exploring The Rise of WhatsApp Romance Scams

Scammers are increasingly turning to platforms like WhatsApp and Google Chat to execute their deceitful schemes. WhatsApp, with its encrypted messaging and wide user base, offers scammers a veil of anonymity and a convenient means of communication with potential victims. This platform’s popularity for personal and business use makes it an attractive target for scammers seeking to exploit trust and manipulate individuals. By understanding the tactics and motivations behind scammers’ preference for WhatsApp, users can better protect themselves from falling victim to romance scams and other fraudulent activities.

What Are Google Chat Scams?

Fraudulent activities within Google Chat refer to deceptive schemes taking place on Google’s messaging platform. Perpetrated by malicious individuals or groups, these scams aim to trick users for financial gain or the acquisition of personal information.

Why Do Scammers Use WhatsApp and Google Hangouts for Scams?

It’s true, scammers love talking through WhatsApp and Google Chat. But these apps are usually not where these scams begin. Catfish scammers use social media to send direct messages to their victims. They do so from fake accounts with stolen photos from celebrities and influencers. They then use romance scammer tactics to lure their victims in. The victims become flattered. This flattery is usually followed by an excuse as to why they need to leave the platform and move the conversation to a messaging app. Some of these scammer’s apps of choice are  Kik, Whatsapp, and Google Chat.

The reason for this is simple. Scammers use messaging apps to keep their fake social media accounts from being reported. They think that if they continue the conversation on a social media or dating app and their victims become suspicious, they can report their account to have it deleted after all the hard work the scammer put in creating the fake profile. However, if their WhatsApp or Google Chat accounts are deleted, then they can just create a new one easily using a picture, username, and new email. Because phone numbers can easily be traced to their owners, Messaging apps are also an easier way for these scammers to hide their identities.

They continue to talk to their victims on a daily basis and make them fall in love with the romance scammer. The victims start building trust in the romance scammer and feel like they could do no wrong. That’s when the romance scammer starts creating emergency excuses as to why they need money. The victims believe in these excuses and start sending money to their romance scammer, thinking that they are helping them. However, the scammer is actually lying to drain these victims’ bank accounts.

Run a reverse image search on the person’s photos to tell if you are talking to a scammer running a fake account. A reverse image search can tell you who is really in the photos.

Can Someone Hack Your Phone Using Google Chat?

Although the chances are slim, there exists a possibility that an individual may uncover and take advantage of a flaw in your application or gain unlawful entry to your Google account, which could potentially lead to a breach of your phone via Google Chat. Nevertheless, it is essential to bear in mind that such situations are infrequent and necessitate a considerable degree of technical expertise and understanding.

To minimize the risk of your phone being hacked via Google Chat, it is essential to take certain precautions, such as keeping your phone and apps updated with the latest security patches, and refraining from clicking on suspicious links or downloading unverified apps.

Furthermore, enabling two-factor authentication on your Google account is critical to adding an extra layer of security to your login process. This can help prevent unauthorized access to your account and the data stored within it, including any sensitive information exchanged through Google Chat.

If you suspect that your Google account has been compromised or would like to investigate whether your information has been leaked, Social Catfish can assist you in performing a reverse email search to see if your email address has been associated with any data breaches. This service allows you to identify any accounts that may have been compromised and can help you take steps to secure your account and sensitive information. Social Catfish is a useful tool for ensuring your online security and privacy.

Types of Google Chat and WhatsApp Scams to Be Aware Of

Job Interview Scams

Lookout. Job scams are a common type of Google Chat Scams. They also pop up on Whatsapp scams. In these scams,  A so-called work-from-home company tells you that they would like to interview you about the position you applied for. They tell you to go onto Google Chat or WhatsApp for the interview, so you do so thinking they are going to video chat with you. Instead, they instant message you about the position making you wonder why they couldn’t do it over a phone or video call like most places do.

After the interview, they tell you that you got the job and give you a little over $1,000 to get the supplies you need. They mail you a check within a week or two and tell you to get a computer, desk, chair, office supplies, and other stuff from certain websites that are usually fake. The check is also fake, meaning you gave all the money back to the scammer for supplies you aren’t giving and now you’re responsible for paying the bank back for the fraudulent funds.

Sextortion Scams

In these scams, someone you met on a dating site entices you to move the conversation over to Google Chat or WhatsApp. These types of Google Chat scams tend to start on other platforms but move to a messaging app to avoid being banned. They then ask you to send them naughty pictures in exchange for theirs. Once you send over your personal pictures, the scammer can do one of two things. The first thing they can do is download malware on your device based on a link you clicked and ask for money to take the malware off.

They can also take your inappropriate pictures and save them on their device. They then tell you that they will send your pictures to all your loved ones if you don’t give them the money to stop. You cave and give them money so they don’t send it to anyone, and they still continue to bug you for more money.

Investment Scams

You receive a message from a stranger on a social media platform claiming that they have a money-making opportunity for you. They state that if you want to learn more, you need to download Google Chat or WhatsApp to continue the conversation.

You download one of these apps since you are curious about the opportunity they are trying to offer you. They convince you to try this investment opportunity with little risk guaranteeing that you will make this money back. However, once you send the money over they block you from one of the messaging apps and the social media platform they contacted you on.

Ransomware

One of the reasons scammers may want to interact with you through WhatsApp is that they’re looking to send you harmful links. These links download malware that can damage your device and gain access to your private data. To avoid these types of scams, never click on a link sent to you from a Whatsapp user that you’re suspicious of.
