If you are a Christian looking for a partner who shares your religious faith, dating app Christian Mingle gets consistent high marks, especially compared to other faith-based dating apps.

This online dating platform is for people looking for long-term relationships, and since its debut in 2001, has matched hundreds of thousands of couples, and has claimed to be responsible for about 30 percent of unions that began online. It has millions of members, primarily younger people in their twenties to forties (though there are older singles on this app, too).

This website and app is a favorite among faith-based singles because it’s an all-Christian site, so members won’t have to worry about daters who don’t share their faith or who are seeking hook-ups or more casual relationships. The people on this app are looking for marriage and long-term relationships with people who share the same religious values.

There are more faith-specific profile questions in addition to the normal age / location / weight and height basics - including how often you attend services, if you want to have children, and what Christian religion you practice - which sets the tone of being a more serious dating app. You can also choose from a dropdown list of your relationship preferences – whether you’re looking for marriage, marriage and kids, a long-term relationship, or a “friend/ activity partner” – so there is some flexibility.

There are a few other related questions too – including how much you drink, whether you have pets, where you grew up, and smoking habits. Users can share their interests as with other apps (there is no limit) as well as photos, either from their camera roll or from Facebook.

It began as a website, but now is available as an app like most online dating platforms. Overall, the app is easy to use and provides a good snapshot of matches and whether they match with your religious preferences and your overall relationship goals or not. You get more out of the app when you pay for features or a subscription, so consider it an investment in your future.

Christian Mingle Profiles & Sign Up Process

When you first sign up, you can do so using Facebook, Google or an email account as verification, and you are immediately prompted to create your profile. The app provides a basic outline, starting with your name and a chance to share “a little about you.”

You can add photos from your phone or from Facebook. Before the picture posts, it goes through a verification process, so it won’t appear in your profile right away.

The next part includes the basics. You can list your height, whether you have kids or want kids, marital status, and your willingness to relocate. Then it asks about your background – what religion you are and how often you attend church, your occupation, highest level of education, college, where you grew up, ethnicity and language preferences.

The lifestyle questions come next, including if you have pets, how often you like to drink, and your smoking habits.

The next section expands to another area where you can choose your preferences from a range of interests in different categories like “eats and drink” and “arts and entertainment.” Here, you can choose from as many options as are listed, depending on how much you want to share up front, but you are limited to the selections offered. (You can’t add your own topics of interest.)

The last section asks about your “preferred first date,” which includes a few options from drinks to a hike to whether you’d prefer “to be surprised.”

Discovery Preferences

To identify what you are looking for, you first select the gender you are looking for (only two choices are given). Enter your preferred age range and distance from your location. Next, you enter your religious preference and whether you’re looking for marriage, a long-term relationship, etc.

There is an “advanced preferences” dropdown box that gets a little more into the particulars. These include questions like preferred height, level of education, how often you’d like your match to attend church, and smoking and drinking habits. There are also important things to add here, such as whether your match has kids or wants kids, if they are willing to relocate, and if they’ve been married before.

In Summary

Overall, the sign-up process is easy, depending on how much you want to share up front. You can be really detailed or choose to answer only the basics. The app wants you to engage and check in often. In fact, it will advertise on your profile the last time you logged in. The app will prompt you to sign up for push notifications for messages each time you enter the app if you didn’t choose this option in the beginning. (You can turn on notifications at any point.)

Christian Mingle Viewing & Communication Features

There are a number of ways to view your activity, profile, and look through your matches. The app varies slightly from the website but for the most part functions in a similar way. We’ll start with the menu choices at the top of the home screen - “Browse” mode:

New

This is the “home screen” where the app presents potential matches in a grid format, with a “spotlight” member featured at the top. Each profile shares what percentage match they are with you, their height, profession, and what religion they are

When you click on a profile, you can view photos and their bios, with the option of messaging, liking, or sending them a smile. You are sent to a “subscribe” page if you want to message someone, but likes and smiles are free.

Online

This is also formatted in a grid for you to scroll through, with a different highlighted member at the top. These are members who are currently online.

Distance

This is again laid out in grid format including another spotlighted member, but this time, you are given a range of profiles - with those who live closest to you towards the top so they are easy to find.

Match %

This section provides potential matches that are most compatible with you, based on the app’s algorithm. They are arranged by the percentage that they matched with you on preferences, background, and other factors (higher percentages are listed at the top). Please note: the “spotlight” profile in this section isn’t necessarily your best Match percentage, so it would be good to scroll through your options.

LookBook

This section highlights one match per day with a high match percentage – it never hurts to look at this one first!

Next we go to the bottom menu of the app, where you can access a range of features, including:

Messages

This is accessed via the email icon at the bottom of the app. In addition to viewing your messages here, you can also see who you liked, who liked you, or who sent or received a smile. You can receive messages as a free member, but as stated above, if you want to respond, you have to pay.

Matches

See the matching section below for more information.

Activity

This section provides a snapshot of:

  • Who viewed your profile
  • What profiles you viewed, with thumbnail photos
  • Mutual likes
  • Your likes (who you wanted to match with)

Christian Mingle offers the traditional dating app-style matching process. When you choose a profile from any of the sections you might browse, you are sent to that individual’s profile page where you can read their bio and see profile basics like religion and how often they go to church, as well as other important preferences like pets, background, education, and work. You can also scroll through their interests and hobbies where you’ll see certain activities that matched with you in boldfaced type.

You are also able to view a snapshot of what they are looking for, and when they were last online. (Some members might go a month or more without logging on which can be a turnoff if you are seriously looking for a partner, so if you want to increase interest, it benefits you to engage more often.)

You can choose to message, like or send a smile to any person whose profile captures your attention. The app recommends engaging so you don’t lose an opportunity. Every time you refresh, you’re presented with new matches.

Matching

You can see a list of people who liked your profile under “matches” – on the app this is identified by the heart icon at the bottom of the screen. It lists your matches for the day, or people who expressed an interest in you (either with a smile or like), and gives you a chance to like them back or message them.

From your “Matches” section you can scroll through each profile individually. You can’t directly send messages from here, but you can like or send them a smile back. There’s no swiping, though. You have to scroll through the entire profile before you can move onto the next to ensure you viewed it.

When you reach the end of your matches for the day, it prompts you to message them and provides thumbnail photos of those you just viewed as reminders. (When you do click on the profile at this point, you can choose the message icon from there, which again if you are a free member will takes you to the subscription page.)

Each profile you view also tells you the percentage match you are with that person, so you can assess how compatible you might be pretty easily. Again, it’s free to like and send a smile, but not to message.
