Detailed Reviews
We have stayed at the Plaza Hotel before so decided to stay again. We like it as it is not a chain on the freeway, it is easy walking access to a few great eating places (The Skillet, Olivia's, El Rialto), pleasant staff, nice room, and very safety conscious with the Covid restrictions. Yes, it would have been nice to have the bar and restaurant open but they can't with the state restrictions and we understand that. They leave the rooms vacant at least 24 hours between guests and we appreciated that.
The room on the third floor was quiet and large. Air conditioning worked and the bed was good. Pillows aren't the best but we are picky pillow people and travel with our own. We were greeted by a nice gentleman when we arrived and he brought the cart out to our car. No refrigerator in our room but we knew that. Morning coffee across the plaza at Olivia's made it convenient.
I would suggest they attempt to have ice available for drink cups. Probably not in the open right now but it would have been nice to get a cup of ice from the front desk for our water glass. That seems like an easy fix for guests.

I stayed one night in early March. The hotel has the feel of what I imagine a hotel from the late 19th century would have felt like...charming and reasonably restored with a complement of related ghost stories and history. We received physical keeps for the room which was nostalgic although it did make me afraid of losing the key (or taking it with me accidentally) I'd stay here again for sure. The plaza itself was also more subdued and nicer than I'd expected. The Range restaurant was delicious as was the one other location in Albuquerque I've eaten at.
Two small issues that prevent me from giving five stars: 1) if there was an air conditioner in my room, I could not figure out how to work it (and didn't ask). It got up to 81 F despite being cool at night and a window being opened. There was a box fan in the corner to use. It probably just didn't have AC and I hadn't noticed when booking the room...my fault 2) I arrived 40 minutes early and tried to check in. I was told the room wasn't ready and that "guaranteed" check-in was at 3pm. Other people were checking in and getting rooms, but their rooms had probably already been cleaned...no problem. When I arrived back at 3pm, the room wasn't ready yet. I don't think there was really any communication with the housekeeping staff to confirm it would be ready at 3pm. Eventually someone did come over and track down the actual status of the room and apologized. We got into the room shortly thereafter.

First off, a warning: when booking on the Plaza website, beware that you are able to book for BOTH the Plaza & Castaneda Hotels. They are owned by the same couple & share the same site for booking. I mistakenly thought I was reserving a room at the Castaneda, but found out on arrival it was for the Plaza.
That being said, I'm glad I made the mistake! We arrived by train & the Plaza Hotel is a mile walk from the rail station. Being that it was good weather & we had limited luggage, this was not a problem.
The staff at the Plaza are amazingly friendly and helpful. The decor is period & photos of the famous folks who have stayed there are by the rooms they stayed in. There is an elevator, but it was not working on the day we left, so keep that in mind.
There is a very informative video constantly playing in the gift store area that tells about the renovation process of this hotel.
The rooms have no coffee maker, but coffee is available starting at 0500 in the lobby. There are also no phones in the rooms. The WiFi is mostly reliable. The rooms have been nicely renovated and our room was very clean. Water pressure was great (which can be a problem in older venues).
The hotel is said to be haunted, but we did not see the ghost!
No gym on the premises, but there is a recreation center you can access for $3.00 a few miles away.

We thought we were making a reservation at the Plaza but ended up being at the Castaned which is owned by the same couple. Since I cannot find a thread for Castaneda I’ll make my review here. I appreciate what the owners are doing in restoring this historic hotel. You can definitely tell this place was grand back in it’s hey day. It is still a work in progress as they continue to restore the building and the grounds. The staff is great. There was no soap, shampoo or towels in the bathroom when we arrived, but the young gentleman at the desk was prompt in bringing them up. There were moth like insects all over the property however we noticed they were bad everywhere in town so we just figured we would treat them like they were the city mascot or something lol.
Only thing I would recommend improving is making the distinction between the Plaza and Castaneda a bit more obvious on the website. Other than that, no complaints.

I regret to report that The Plaza Hotel, formerly one of our favorite places to stay while traveling in northern Mew Mexico, is in decline: a shadow of its former self. Whether this is the result of the COVID 19 contagion, or the fact that the owners opened a rival hotel in the same small city, I don't know, but the sad facts are apparent.
We visited there a couple of weeks ago, part of a trip to the area, as we had been fans of The Plaza since the current owners took it over. We had visited it several times before that, even during the funky, "No Territory for Old Men" days, witnessing it steadily improve to a peak, with a fun bar, one of the nicer restaurants in Las Vegas, and even absorbing the large building next door.
For our latest visit, however, the restaurant and bar were gone, perhaps victims of the flagging Las Vegas economy. Amenities, such as morning ice or coffee self-service, were discontinued.
The room conditions were a bit shabby. Specifically, there was food on the room carpet, suggesting that it hadn't been vacuumed between guests, and there were crumbs of some sort in the desk drawer. The computer-assisted television needed to re-boot whenever we turned the light switch on or off, and the sheets did not fit the mattress. In short, it appeared that The Plaza was returning to its, "No Territory..." days.
The malaise seemed to have spread out to the Las Vegas plaza area as well, as most of the nearby restaurants we sought as substitutes for the one that used to be at The Plaza seemed unwelcoming to all but local customers. Next time I am in the area, assuming a stop in Las Vegas, I intend to shop around on Trip Advisor for lodging elsewhere. The Country club area seemed promising.
I must add before closing that the manager at the front desk was one of the most personable and friendly individuals we met during our entire trip. In fact, he was the most positive aspect of the of the visit, reminding us of how Las Vegas used to be. Unfortunately, he had no control of the circumstances and could only conduct damage control.

While the hotel is charming the level of customer service is poor. One would think that for the cost of the rooms that you might be able to enjoy a couple free cups of coffee, especially since there are really no other amenities to speak of. We discovered that they only serve free coffee between the hours of 5:00 a.m. to 7:00 a.m. This is not indicated on the information given out at the front desk nor did the front desk person let us know of the limited hours for coffee. After getting one cup of coffee at 6:00 a.m. and then going down at 7:09 a.m. there was a sign up giving the hours of the free coffee. The front desk person advised that they just put up the sign at 7:00 and that it is not up during the time there is coffee available. They also said the info on the coffee hours is printed in the material they gave us, it is not. They must have some agreement with the coffee shop in the hotel about the hours for coffee, which is understandable. The front desk clerk aplogized but offered nothing else and advised that the manager did not come in until 10:00 a.m. Yes, it is just a cup of coffee but this shows poor customer service. We really liked the town and would like to make a return visit but will never come back to this hotel.

We are halfway through a road trip around Texas and New Mexico. We have stayed in modern hotels, a caboose, a cabin and roadside motels, this is by far the worst experience.
I understand it's an historical hotel but our room, 217, was shabby. We had to ask for air freshener because of the smell in the room. There isn't any coffee making facilities despite the booking details stating there was. When we asked at reception we were told coffee and tea is available downstairs between the hours of 5am and 7am, after that you pay for it. The details on the booking site are wrong.
Minimal toiletries provided, towels are as old as the hotel.
We've stayed in older hotels before but they have been clean and refreshed, this is very tired.
Only one bulb working in bathroom, fridge is inadequate, plug sockets don't work. Generally very disappointed.
Needs a good clean, mirror in room is dusty, fan is the same. Outlook from 217 is dire. Definitely not worth the money. It's also very noisy with people above just walking around their room. Do not recommend.
Las Vegas itself is rundown and not worth visiting.
It's worth noting if you use your card to purchase anything there is a 3% charge on top!!

Staff “can’t tell wether just ignorant or not bothered”. Went to check in stood for 10 mins whilst staff member finished her conversation. Got the key to room and had to go fetch cleaner to enter and smell the Oder is as smelling she left to return with a liquid to refresh the air. No coffee facilities in room I was advised their is a cafe downstairs. Towels had a stale stench with paint flaking in the bathroom. The main room mirror was thick with dust with the bed sheet on inside out. Check out was the same with a blank looked staff member “ just leave the key in the bowl”. Give this place a miss

Our first time in Las Vegas, NM and will not be our last. What a beautiful hotel with so much history. The hallways are lined with photos, history and information on all the movies that have been filmed here along with some beautiful old furniture. We opened the door to our room not knowing what to expect and we were just amazed. What a beautiful room and the most comfortable bed. Our nights sleep in this hotel was the best one our whole week long trip. Be sure to ask for Room 319. It also overlooks the plaza. The Prairie Hill Cafe downstairs had wonderful food and the staff was so friendly all while doing their best during a water conservation because of the fires. There is also a cute gift shop in the hotel and bar area. We sat out on the patio at night and had a glass of wine looking out at the plaza. Highly recommend and we will be back!

Part of our New Mexico road trip was to visit haunted or historic hotels. The Plaza gave us both experiences.
The hotel over looked the historic Las Vegas square. Our room was exceptional. It was very clean and spacious. The bed offered a peaceful night's sleep.
The staff were some of the friendliest and most professional we have encountered.
The restaurant, Prairie Hill Café, in the hotel offered an unusual menu selection. The food was good. The prices were typical of an in-hotel restaurant.
There was an extensive gift shop offering a variety work by local artists as well as general goods (t-shirts, caps, postcards, etc..).
One of my traveling companions and I were trying out our new EMF meter on the third floor where our room was located. We were taking a break on one of the sofas beside and antique wardrobe. The door to the wardrobe opened beside us. The handle requires turning to disengage the catch. I had secured the door earlier after it was found opened on a prior trip down the hallway.
Pick your poison, but you will not regret a stay at the Plaza Hotel.

Going to their internet site and clicking "rooms" yields three choices: plaza rooms, standard and economy. You choose which you want from there. Best!
Don't remember a fridge but there was plenty of ice and the front desk would no doubt accomodate you. Loads of parking on the plaza and at the side and back. Don't miss out on staying here.
Yes this is correct
Room 310 in the Plaza is said to house the ghost of a fellow named Byron T. Mills. Some television series about ghosts referred to it years ago. Might be on YouTube.
They have free coffee and tea with fruit and sweet bread. But I highly recommend the breakfast in the hotel dining room. It is not free, but not expensive and it is fabulous.
There is also a place at the end of the block named El Cantando? I think is the name. It is also very good home cooked family place that makes great breakfast.
