What is the next best Anno after 1800?

Question

I love Anno 1800 and was thinking of trying one of their earlier games out.

Any recommendations on which is the second best?

2070 maybe?

UPDATE: I bought the bundle for 2205 and 1404...only $18! Thank you for all the comments!

1404. My first anno game, absolutely loved it when I was younger!

Yeah, I remember I always wanted to walk around my cities and climb on the buildings, I used to roleplay seeing the ships arrive at the harbor.

1404 imo

I love 2070, but I am a sucker for futuristic/scifi/cyberpunk theme

space setting appeals to me too.

Honestly even 2205 isn't that bad, it look really good. However due to the way the trade routes work it's less complicated. I believe you can even skip the combat stuff now, if you're not interested. Would recommend getting in a sale and play through it at least once.

Remind me how did the trade route work in 2205?

You can directly create a trade route from one region to another and specify the exact amount of goods you want to transfer. This is done instantly without travel time or physical goods. Removes pretty much all complexity of trading.

I think you could always skip combat by managing to level up you company level once when the conflict sector popped up.

I've started with anno 1602 in 1998 and have all of the games since then 😅 but 1404 is imo one of the best ❤️

I think we can agree on 1404, no poll needed.

hands down 1404, i still think it's better than 1800, but maybe that's nostalgia talking

really? Why would you say 1404 is better?

i personally love the way they depicted the historical period and the artstyle is beautiful. the production chains are simple but work together beautifully and the campaign is amazing

Plus Lord Richard Northburgh is quite lovely and optimistic.

It has items but not this insanity that is Anno 1800 when it comes to items. Sometimes I feel more like playing Lotto than like playing Anno.

1800 annoys me having to set up a new town and production chain on each island. 1404 doesn’t care so you can just go to a new island, get whatever special resource you needed from it and not bother building anything else.

Second 1404, it's just excellent. 2070 is just a more boring reskin of 1404 if you ask me.

But I could watch those ECO tea farms for hours. Also deep ocean cities are beautiful.

1404

It has to be 2070, masterpiece 🙌🏽

  1. 2070 / 1404: i personally played more of 2070 since it was more unique imo, but they are pretty much the same core game

  2. 2205: the whole journey to the moon was really cool as a kinda on-rails Anno, not much replayability tho

  3. 1503: old but classic, very different from the modern bunch but lots of space and stuff to do

Im looking at 2205 and 2070...

2205 seems to look a lot nice graphics wise. Would you say 2070 is the better game though?

2205 to me is kind of a play through it once deal, mechanically its somewhat close to a sinplified 1800. 2070 can be more difficult due to no statistics menu and actual physical transportation, in general its also a lot more difficult than 1800. EDIT: And most importantly, 2205 is Singleplayer only! 2070 can be played in coop or pvp.

imo i couldn't stand 2070; it plays like 1404 but it had few very annoying things, such as the UI felt smaller and much harder to read, and the quest tracker keeps "pinging" everytime i mistakenly hover over the UI element. it drove me crazy.

Hmmm... Weird thing is, that there are people who would say 1404, some would say 2205, and some would say none. The thing is, many consider 1800 the best that the series can offer. That claim is not without merit. But some do not. And for good reasons. Imho, 1404 was the best for me, followed by 2070 and then 1800. Many people would add 1701 before 1404, again, with a good reasoning.

So, if I would be the judge, after 1800 is 1701. At least for me.

It has been interesting reading all the responses!

This should be a poll...

Anno 1602, but that 100% nostalgia speaking. Was my first Anno game and played it a lot as a kid. Never really fully understood it but loved it anyway.

Now if we don’t take nostalgia into account I think 2070 is the second best, though 1404 isn’t far behind.

I have exactly the same relationship with anno 1602, I've played it recently and it is still honestly great.

And having footsoldiers makes such a huge difference compared to the only naval focused anno 1800.

I love the whacky 1990s combat. Attack that wall... WITH YOUR SWORD!

Yeah it's amazing, and sending a whole company of sword soldiers onto an island to disassemble everything including the castle which is made from solid rock.

What a great game, we don't speak of the horrible things I did to the natives 👀

2070 in my opinion, although 1404 isn't far behind it.

2070 is the best anno 🙄

u/CoryDeRealest avatar

I honestly do like the nostalgia of 1404, but idk I felt like 2070 they freaking killed it, it was a very cool blend with future, and I still play it every now and then, 1404 is now too dated, if they made another 1404 with the mechanics and logic behind 1800 though? Ouff THE GROUND war too? Man… 2070 with the modern mechanics would be amazing too, but the revival of 1404 would be awesome.

Is that the issue with 1404? it's old now?

u/martijnlv40 avatar

Nope, the history edition fixed any RAM issues that could have occurred. It holds up really wel in every department, and its repeatability is beyond stellar.

Nah it's not, it still has decent graphics and works fine.

u/CoryDeRealest avatar

No I mean all the quality of life UI and mechanics I’m used to from 1800, and even 2070, the camera is better, the logistics more complex, the variety, the complexity, all the decorations, etc, make 1404 feel too outdated to play today for me. If they remade 1404 with all the modern graphics and UI, I’d love it.

All I think the game needs imo is blueprint, move tool and maybe multiple sessions

2070 if you like mods

1404 if you like vanilla anno

1404 because i personally dont like the future settings.

Visually 2205 (god, how I could have loved this game with proper game mechanics)

Gameplay wise it's a clear 1404 for me.

But I also really liked 2070. It created some new ideas and even if some of them weren't really thought through yet, it really had some creative aspects.

2205

Yes I was looking at 2205 and 2070...seems 2070 looks a lot nicer graphics wise. Is the game play that better in 2205 though?

Everyone will have their own preferences and you will get a mix of answers.

Whats yours? :)

u/Remy-today avatar

My preference due to a busy lifestyle is only to play Anno1800.

My issue with 1800 is that I have done pretty much everything there is to in the game. Will of course play with the new DLC, but I just keep adding to my already huge save game.

The thought of starting over seems to daunting with everything going on in the game.

So I was thinking of starting an entirely new Anno.

I was really challenged when i started a *** game🤗

u/HolyHerbert avatar

My two cents: 1404 or 2070 are both excellent. 1404 has more flair and feels more like one of the typical Anno games that were all set in the past. It's a terrific historic city builder. But 2070 is more challenging and complex, so it'll probably feel more like 1800 from a technical point of view. It really comes down to what you're looking for. If you don't care for setting, 2070 is better imo. Can't go wrong with either one though.

1404 or 2070 for me. Both still hold up really well.

2070. And 1503, because it still looks so good exactly 20 years later.

1404 and 2070, those are much more simpler than 1800 but still are the best, they are similar too.

You have to play them in order, basically. It’s alright to start with 1602 or 1701, from then do 1404 + Venice, 2070 + Deep Sea, 2205 (single player, but it’s well made, maybe a bit boring)

They surely made every Anno better than previous Annos, you have to see what setting you like (eg if you like sci-fi, you might find you like 2070 more than 1404)

The only one that sucked in comparison to their previous versions was 2205, but it was still pretty good as a stand-alone game. Should’ve been called Anno (Simplified) or something like that.

- add 1800 mechanic to 1404: 1 tile farm, blueprint, HUD, ship control, multi up/downgrade, multi move... resell 1404 as new game ;)

- add 1404 to 1800: I WANT SHARK FOLLOW MY SHIP!!!

Playing since 1602

Personally I'd say 1404 is next best, Closely followed by the OG 1602

1404 but nothing compares to 1503 tbh

1404, thats when I started playing anno :D

u/MateuszC1 avatar

2070 if you like futuristic settings. 1404 if you don't.

Personally I believe that 2070 is superior to 1404 when game mechanics are concerned, but I prefer sails to engines. I love both games though. :-)

1404 + Venice for sure

u/jje10001 avatar

I personally think 1404 and 2070 are the most 'rounded out' of the other Annos.

Graphically-wise, both have a good art direction that doesn't feel dated even to this day (aside from the more primitive shaders and edge smoothing).

1404. Not flawless but holds up pretty well.

u/Itsme-RdM avatar

1404 with Venice

For me it's 2070, with 1404 a close second

2070. Modern naval combat moves me. Ships, aircraft, subs, threats of nuclear retaliation. All that sounds like yes plz
