While Versace’s mother encouraged him to do what he loved, Cunanan’s father told his son he was special and that success would follow if Cunanan believed it.
We also saw Cunanan’s father give him preferential treatment above his siblings and how the meeting with his father in the Philippines completely changed him.

Andrew Cunanan’s Parents
Andrew Cunanan’s father was a man named Modesto “Pete” Cunanan, a Filipino immigrant. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War when Cunanan was born. He reportedly worked with Merrill Lynch at one time but was fired from the job.
When Cunanan was 19 years old, his father was accused of embezzlement. He abandoned his wife and children and fled to the Philippines to avoid going to prison.
Mary Anne Schillaci, an Italian American, was Cunanan’s mother. She found out that Cunanan was gay the same year her husband fled to the Philippines.
Cunanan reportedly had an argument with his mother about his sexuality. He flung her against the wall and dislocated her shoulder.

Cunanan’s disappointment in finding out that his father was not the successful man he claimed to be is evident.
Who Were Andrew Cunanan’s Siblings?
Andrew Cunanan was the youngest of four children. He had a brother named Christopher Cunanan, and two sisters, Elena and Regina Cunanan.
Cunanan’s siblings have revealed more details about their infamous brother.
In an ABC News interview in 1997, Christopher Cunanan said, “He was my father’s pride and joy. (He was) very smart. When he was about 10 years old, he had read the whole set of encyclopedias … and memorized it. And you could ask him any question. Pick up any edition and ask him any question, and he would tell you.”
Cunanan’s sister attested to the fact that their brother received special treatment sais, “He got everything that he needed. My dad gave him a sports car. He had the master bedroom. He had his own bath and everything.”
The Portrait of a Serial Killer
With an IQ of 147 and access to private school education, no one could have predicted that Andrew Cunanan would turn into one of America’s most wanted fugitives in the 1990s.
Cunanan’s father enrolled him in The Bishop’s School located in the posh La Jolla neighborhood of San Diego. He was reportedly bright and very talkative. And as a teenager, he became an expert at changing his appearance.
Seeing his father’s failure to secure a comfortable life for his family may have pushed Cunanan over the edge.

Cunanan’s obsessive lies, befriending wealthy older men, and brazen behavior may have been signs pointing at what was coming. However, it seems like we’ll never really know the true reason behind his killings, especially that of Gianni Versace.
