The actor Pierce Brosnan has paid tribute to his daughter, Charlotte, who has died from cancer at the age of 42.

"On June 28 my darling daughter Charlotte Emily passed on to eternal life, having succumbed to ovarian cancer," Brosnan said in a statement. "She was surrounded by her husband Alex, children Isabella and Lucas and brothers Christopher and Sean."

Charlotte Brosnan was the actor's adoptive daughter, taking his surname in 1986. She was the child of Brosnan's first wife Cassandra, who died from the same disease in 1991.

"Charlotte fought her cancer with rare grace and humanity, courage and dignity," the actor added. "Our hearts are heavy with the loss of our beautiful dear girl. We pray for her, and that the cure for this wretched disease will be at hand soon. We thank everyone for their heartfelt condolences."

Brosnan, 60, starred as James Bond in four 007 pictures between 1995 and 2002. His other film credits include Mamma Mia!, The Ghost Writer and Love is All You Need, and he is currently shooting his role in an espionage thriller, November Man, opposite former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko.

After adopting Charlotte and her brother Christopher, Brosnan went on to have a son, Sean, with Cassandra. He also has two children, Dylan and Paris, with his second wife, Keely Shaye Smith.
