The view was good enough though better in pictures. The quiet and the cleanliness surrounding lake is appreciable.

Lake Mainit stretches some 30 kilometers through the center of NE Mindanao so I'm going to focus on the lake front town of the same name. Visiting Mainit is like stepping back in time. Neat rows of hardwood houses line narrow streets, friendly locals are there to guide you. People still sit on the porch and watch the world go by. There's a large swimming pool right on the lake where 25 pesos gets all day usage. There are no hotels or resturants so you'll be making a day trip.

... for too much dirt.
This lake is so impressive from the distance. Wow. But the places around are with plastic dirt all over and they charge so much for everything. I will come back with a rental car to find maybe better places by the lake.

My friend who's living in one of the barangays along the coastline invited me to his place recently so I had the chance to blessedly explore this lake for about a week. You can almost do anything here - family picnic, fishing, boating, cave exploring, etc.. Had the chance to mingle with the local folks and they were nice people! Please don't expect to find high end resorts here though or you'll be disappointed. But if you are the adventurous type this place is carved right for you. By the way, peace and order situation here doesn't pose danger to future visitors. My friend told me no such incident happened for a very long time. I plan of going back very soon and bring along with me some of my friends. A week or two? Sounds good!

We went to Surigao City for the day just to lightly explore in prep for maybe spending a couple of days for a deeper look another time and as we were driving we came up on this beautiful fresh water lake. We stopped and took pictures and enjoyed the view

Lake Mainit is a very nice place and the town of Mainit is good for a stop.
As we travel on a motorcycle and met a couple that traveled on bicycles, I would not worry too much about being ambushed.
We traveled on dirt roads from Mainit to Tugunun Falls to Ba-das and were not robbed or kidnapped.

Lake Mainit, the fourth largest lake and the deepest lake in the country, is a sight to behold. Various endemic flora and fauna can be found in the environs of the lake. Sunsets is the time when the lake is most photogenic (so get your cameras ready by then). There are some basic accommodations that can be found along the lakeshore, visible from the highway, if your driving from Butuan City to Surigao City.

It is the deepest lake in the Philippines until Mt Pinatubo erupted and created a deep crater lake. Lots of fish pens visible near towns for its popular "Pidjanga" fish. It is best seen along the mountainous part of the national highway. Since there is still occasional rebel activity here, it is not advisable to take a stop for viewing especially at dusk or very early morning. There are no off-road parking for viewing hence driving slower is the best option as someone else in the car takes the photos.
