Early life and education

Tamiko was born to a nurse who immigrated to the US from Japan, and to a father who was a naval commander – she spent her early life in California before enrolling at the University of Utah, from which she graduated with her bachelor’s degree in 1993. After that, she enrolled at the University of Miami and obtained her Master’s degree in 1995.

Tamiko’s career

Tamiko launched her career in pharmacy and education shortly after obtaining her bachelor’s degree. She is currently working as a licensed pharmacist, while she is also an education consultant; after marrying George, she became an entrepreneur. George was born into a rich Jewish family, to Erzsebet whose family owned a thriving silk shop, and Tivadar who worked as a lawyer. It was in 1936 that his family changed their last name to Soros for safety reasons. George was 13 years-old when Hungary was occupied by the Germans during World War II, and the Soros family escaped being imprisoned and deported thanks to buying forged documents which showed that they were Christians. At the age of 17, George moved to live in England, and enrolled at the London School of Economics – to financially support himself, he worked as a waiter and a railway porter, and graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in philosophy in 1951, followed in 1954 by obtaining his Master of Science degree in philosophy.

George’s first job in investing was for a merchant bank, as he explained during an interview at the Los Angeles World Affairs Council in 2006 – ‘… I wrote to every managing director in every merchant bank in London, got just one or two replies, and eventually that’s how I got a job in a merchant bank.’ It was 1954 when he began working at the Singer & Friendlander merchant bank in London – he served as a clerk before moving to the arbitrage section. Advised by his colleague, he moved to F.M. Mayer in New York City in 1956, working there for three years before moving to Wertheim and Co in 1959. In 1963, he became the vice-president of the Arnhold and S. Blechroeder investment bank in New York.

In 1970 created the Double Eagle hedge fund, which later served as a foundation for his Soros Fund, having made $12 million. After Soros Fund was launched, George left Double Eagle which was later renamed to Quantum Fund and which has since its official inception in 1973 amassed over $40 billion.

George came to worldwide fame after he earned over $1 billion when he sold around $10 billion in pounds sterling – this led to the UK withdrawing from the European Exchange Rate Mechanism, and devaluing the pound giving George the title of “the man who broke the Bank of England”.

George has two sons named Robert and Jonathan, and a daughter Andrea with his first wife Annaliese Witschak, whom he divorced in 1983. He has two children named Alexander and Gregory with Susan Weber, whom he married in 1983 and divorced in 2005 – he and Tamiko have no children together.
