This reminds me of this time in Thailand where I hooked up with this fine looking hooker named Tami and we went back to this big hole in a river of mud that I made. Things began absolutely fantastic and it was the best I ever had, then all a sudden she starts violently munching on my knob like it's a Big Mac. This is kind of what United does after the initial 4 tracks. It'll leave you dickless, I means that.

This is, probably, a good album. But if you're like me and made the mistake of listening to their newest record first, you were sorely disappointed. The only songs I still listen to from this album are If I Ever Feel Better and Summer Days, and I honestly don't remember many of the others (I'll revisit it sooner or later). I just remember the feelings of confusion and boredom as I listened to it. It's a decent record, most likely! But it lacks all of the fun and energy that I associated with Phoenix. There's not too much potential in this dated, R&B-influenced style, and they did the best they could, but it's inconsistent at best. Maybe worth owning just to look back on and see how much they've grown up since this record, but that's about it. 2.5 for effort and a few catchy hooks.

Stand-ups such like If I ever feel better (one of my favorite songs of all time) or Too young reminds fresh and very present in my memories. I can't say the same of mostly all of the album however it sounds good overall.
Favorites: If I ever feel better, Honeymoon, Too young, funky Squaredance.

This album really is the story of its best tracks, specifically "Too Young" and "If I Ever Feel Better," which are both excellent. There's some other decent stuff here, but there's also plenty of utterly forgettable music as you move through this one.

Favorite tracks: Too Young, If I Ever Feel Better, Embuscade

Good, fun debut but nothing too outstanding or phenomenal on here, at the same time though no low points here so just a solid album overall

the most debut-iest debut I've ever heard. United sounds nothing like their stuff from when they were big. A huge disconnect in style. I like the raunchy promiscuous theme but it doesn't really do much else with its tone, listening felt kind of in-between 'forgettably enjoyable' to 'at least I can say I listened to it'.

(Probably) A bad album with some great songs?
This album has some of my favorite Pheonix songs of all time on it. Songs like "If I ever feel better", and "Too Young" are great. Now, after the first three songs, this album goes off the deep end. It's not even that I don't like all of the songs in the album's second half, but looking at this as a body of work, it feels insanely disjointed. I also think that I was spoiled a bit by starting in on Pheonix with Wolfgang Amudaus Pheonix. Their newer stuff set me up to look for a certain sound from Pheonix, and that sound is completely missing in the second half of United. I think if I was to listen to this when it came out, my opinion might be different.

"Funky Squaredance" is this album's equivalent to "The Beta Band Rap" -- a fucked up cry for help from the Y2K-era music industry that demands (and only sort of deserves) your love and appreciation. Genuinely, putting this song on your debut album for a major label AND NOT HAVING ANYBODY REALLY NOTICE OR CARE is the definition of privilege.

Pretty good album.
