The statue of Peter the Great in the Peter and Paul Fortress was unveiled on June 7, 1991. The monument is a sculpture of Peter I, sitting on the throne. It has tiny head and massive torso and it's hard to believe that this statue offers a true representation of Peter the Great, the founder of the Peter and Paul Fortress and of St. Petersburg. But the sculptor Mikhail Shemyakin used the death-mask and wax figure of Peter kept in the Hermitage. The sculpture seems to bring out very contradictory feelings in the viewers and is one of the most popular sights in the fortress. Personally, it seems to me that the people of St. Petersburg really like this statue. This statue is really amazing.

A modern monument (erected 1991) and a strange interpretation of Peter the Great with a very small head and oversized hands! It's situated on the main avenue of the Peter and Paul Fortress and is worth a look just because it's so odd, but I wouldn't bother making a special effort to see it.

Not much to say other than it is a large and interesting statue. It is located in a traffic circle/plaza and is a good picture spot.

Got the picture. Can prove we have been there.

One of the most extraordinary monuments not only in St. Petersburg, but throughout Russia. A monument to a great man, in my opinion, should also be great and respectable.
And here is an eclectic mixture of a death mask disproportionate to the figure itself, thin spider fingers, a bald skull.
All this makes an unpleasant impression, but you definitely need to look in order to make your opinion.

I'm a little surprised that this deserves its own ratings on TripAdvisor. It's something you'll see if you go to the fortress and nothing you should make a special trip to see.

Thanks for reading. I’ll appreciate a thumbs up below if you’ve found this helpful.

Sure this is a very touristy thing to do, but since we were tourists, we did the photo shot. Watch out for other tourists and the traffic.

A very small head and huge hands. I am not sure of the message from the artist, and I understand that the local community is unsure what to make of it, but it does serve as a talking point about the founder of the city.

This somewhat strange statue of Peter the Great is located inside the Peter and Paul Fortress not too far away from the Cathedral. It's a modern representation of Peter the Great and his head seems disproportionately small in relation to the rest of the statue. Quite curious and worth a look when you're visiting the fortress.

Those spooky long fingers and micro-small head cannot possibly be a compliment to the great Peter. It was designed and made in the USA (well, that explains a lot, maybe Hollywood?) The face is a mask cast of the actual Peter the Great, before his death in the 1700's.

It was donated to Russia. Well, that explains a lot. It hasn't been very popular with locals; vandalism was always a concern. It is cartoon-ish but very distinct. After awhile, it grows on you. We walked away pretty much liking the piece but we like weird things anyway. The sculpture/statue is on the grounds of the Peter and Paul Fortress.
