Former Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has officially announced his return to write an episode for the upcoming Ncuti Gatwa-led season.
In a BBC press release, the company confirmed that Moffat would be coming back to the iconic British sci-fi series. On his return, Moffat said: “Apologies to everyone I’ve very slightly misled - I am in fact writing an episode of the series of Doctor Who. Exactly like I said I never would. What can I tell you? There was begging, there was pleading but finally Russell agreed to let me have another go - so long as I got out of his garden. Working with old friends and a brand new Doctor I couldn’t be happier.“
Ncuti Gatwas New Doctor Who Outfit Will Include Nods to Past Doctors
A new outfit for Ncuti Gatwa in Doctor Who will include nods to previous Doctors.Doctor Who fans had previously speculated for months that Moffat would be returning in some capacity for the new era of the show, with previous rumors suggesting that he would write the next Christmas special. Although it seems that Moffat will be writing an episode of the new season rather than a special, the former showrunner appears delighted to be coming back to the franchise. “I’ve always admired Russell T Davies,” Moffat said. “Ncuti Gatwa is an unbelievably talented actor who has stepped into the role of the Fifteenth Doctor effortlessly, alongside the equally talented Millie Gibson.”
Moffat’s episode will be part of Ncuti Gatwa’s first season as the Doctor, which begins airing on May 10. Julie Anne-Robinson has been confirmed to direct the new story, joining a growing list of filmmakers making new Doctor Who episodes. Moffat described his top-secret episode as Hitchcockian, a reference to the prolific British filmmaker in the 20th century who helmed classics such as Psycho and Rear Window.
