Phoenix Mercury all-time great and fan-favorite, Penny Taylor, was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame tonight in Knoxville, Tennessee.
The Phoenix Mercury will celebrate Taylor’s Hall of Fame induction when they return home to face the Minnesota Lynx on Tuesday, June 21 at 7 p.m. at Footprint Center. An exclusive Penny Taylor t-shirt will be available at the Team Shop starting at 10 a.m. on Tuesday to commemorate her many accomplishments on the court.
The celebrations will continue with a one-of-a-kind Penny Taylor bobblehead giveaway on Friday, August 12 when the team takes on the Dallas Wings at Footprint Center at 7 p.m., as part of CarMax Inspiring Women Night. Doors will open at 6:00 p.m. (5:30 p.m. for PayPal X-Factor Members) and the first 2,500 fans in attendance will receive a voucher redeemable for the commemorative bobblehead (limit one per person).
Launching today in honor of the moment, fans can follow along Penny Taylor’s journey to the Hall of Fame by watching CarMax “The Drive: Road to the Hall of Fame” four-part series featuring interviews with Taylor, Diana Taurasi, past Mercury teammates and fellow Hall of Fame inductees. Taylor was one of eight inductees honored, joining former WNBA stars Becky Hammon, DeLisha Milton-Jones, as well as DePaul University coach Doug Bruno, former coaches Paul Sanderford and Bob Schneider, contributor Debbie Antonelli, and veteran player Alice “Cookie” Barron.
Taylor, who spent 10 of her 13 seasons in the WNBA with the Mercury from 2004 to 2016, won three titles in Phoenix, earned three WNBA All-Star berths, was a two-time All-WNBA First Team selection, and finished her career as the franchise’s fourth all-time leading scorer (3,587), second in assists (861), and third in steals (370).
In addition to her WNBA career, the Melbourne, Australia native enjoyed a celebrated international career as a three-time Olympian with Australia, leading the team to two silver medals and a 2006 World Championship title for which she was named tournament MVP.
After retiring at the conclusion of the 2016 season, Taylor served as the Mercury’s Director of Player Development and Performance in 2017 and then as an assistant coach in 2019. She became the fifth Mercury legend retired to the rafters on July 9, 2017.
