Favorite Quotes from Paul Simon

“Kodachrome, it gives us those nice bright colors Gives us the greens of summers Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day, oh yeah! I got a Nikon camera, I love to take a photograph So momma, don’t take my Kodachrome away…” – Paul Simon

“If you can get humor and seriousness at the same time, you’ve created a special little thing, and that’s what I’m looking for, because if you get pompous, you lose everything.” – Paul Simon

“Most of the time, the songs have jokes in them, little sarcastic things, or purposely kitsch or something. So that’s going along with a story, like I do in life, just talking to myself and making fun of stuff and laughing at stuff that’s serious. And sometimes it’s a good idea to put the laughing into the songs. Sometimes it’s not. Sometimes it’s all right just to be serious. But most of the songs have some kind of joke in them.” – Paul Simon

“I don’t really know why an idea comes to me. But all of a sudden, an idea comes, and from experience, I can intuit what something means when an interesting line pops up. Or I can intuit what an interesting choice might be. And I can try a couple of different choices, and see which one feels right, and then continue the song to see where it goes.” – Paul Simon

“I don’t feel any pressure from fans. But I’m always in some kind of state of emotional turmoil. I would not describe myself as happy-go-lucky. That’s not to say that I’m not happy.” – Paul Simon

“I really don’t know what exactly all the songs mean. Sometimes other people have meanings and when I hear them I think, ‘That’s really a better meaning than I thought, and perfectly valid, given the words that exist.’ So part of what makes a song really good is that people take in different meanings, and they apply them, and they might be more powerful than the ones I’m thinking.” – Paul Simon

Introduction

Bill Berry is a retired American musician.

Berry was the drummer for the alternative rock band R.E.M. However, best known for his economical drumming style.

Berry also played other instruments, including guitar, bass guitar, and piano, both for songwriting and on R.E.M. albums.

After a long career with the band, he left the music industry to become a farmer. He has since then maintained a low profile.

As of May 2024, Bill Berry’s net worth is estimated to be roughly $40 Million.

Early Life

William Thomas Berry was born on the 31st of July, 1958, in Duluth, Minnesota. Berry is the fifth child of Don and Anna Berry.

At the age of 3, he moved with his family to Wisconsin, a suburb of Milwaukee, where they would remain for the next seven years.

In 1972, the Berry family made their final move to Macon, Georgia.

He met bass guitarist Mike Mills, and they played together in many different bands, including Shadowfax. Their first attempt at a music career was short-lived.

He and Mills decided to make money by getting day jobs.

Career

After his family moved to Macon, Georgia, Bill Berry met Bassist Mike Mills, and they began playing together in different bands.

Following high school, the pair rented an apartment in Macon, and Bill began working at a booking agency to support himself.

In 1978, they moved to Athens, Georgia, where they met Michael Stipe and Peter Buck.

Together, the four formed the band R.E.M. in 1980, and along with drumming, Berry also contributed to vocals, bass, piano, and mandolin on their tracks.

Performing With R.E.M.

As a member of R.E.M., Bill Berry wrote the hit songs “Everybody Hurts,” “Man on the Moon,” and “Perfect Circle.”

While with R.E.M., Berry was also the drummer for Hindu Love Gods, alongside Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Bryan Cook, and Warren Zevon in 1994.

However, after over a decade of success, Berry collapsed on stage at the Patinoire Auditorium in 1995.

Later, it was revealed that the collapse stemmed from a ruptured brain aneurysm, and after recovering, he rejoined the band.

Unfortunately, in 1997, Berry ended up leaving the band, stating that he no longer had the drive to continue his work.

Following his wishes, R.E.M. continued as a three-man band and toured with several other musicians over the following decade.

Now one of the richest rockstars in the world, Bill Berry entered a state of semi-retirement outside of the limelight.

Farming & A Return To Music

While Bill Berry had enough money to retire in any of the most expensive cities in the world, he chose a quieter alternative.

After leaving R.E.M., Berry left the music industry and went on to become a farmer in Farmington, Georgia.

There, he worked on a hay farm and enjoyed his time away from music, later stating that he never enjoyed being a drummer.

That said, he did sporadically contribute to musical projects after leaving R.E.M. and, in 2000, recorded a piece for the Tourette Syndrome charity album Welcome Champions

In 2018, Berry performed at the Winterville Auditorium as a member of Mayor Ferrelle’s and the Councilmen’s quartet.

He then appeared in the 2020 documentary Song Exploder, playing his part in the drumline of R.E.M.’s “Losing My Religion.”

Bill Berry returned to music in 2022, 25 years after leaving R.E.M., forming the supergroup The Bad Ends.

This band consisted of Dave Domizi on bass, Geoff Melkonian on keyboards, Christian Lopez on guitars, and Berry on drums.

Together, The Bad Ends released the single “All Your Friends Are Dying” and a music video.

They first performed a hometown show in November 2022 and dropped their debut album, The Power and the Glory, in January 2023.

Most recently, Berry joined Michael Stipe and Peter Buck to perform “Perfect Circle” at a R.E.M. tribute concert at the 40 Watt Club.

Their first appearance together since 2007, this surprise reunion in Athens, Georgia, was a delightful surprise to their fans.

Introduction

John Deacon is an English retired musician.

Deacon is best known for being the bass guitarist for the rock band Queen.

He composed several songs for the group – including Top 10 hits ‘You’re My Best Friend’, ‘Another One Bites the Dust’, and ‘I Want to Break Free’.

In 1971, he joined Queen 1971 on the strength of his musical and electronic skills.

As of May 2024, John Deacon’s net worth is estimated to be roughly $170 Million.

Early Life

John Richard Deacon was born on the 19th of August, 1951, in London Road, Leicester.

Deacon is the son of Arthur Henry and Lilian Mollie Deacon.

His father worked at the Norwich Union insurance company and in 1960 the family moved to the dormitory town of Oadby.

He attended Linden Junior School in Leicester, Gartree High School, and Beauchamp Grammar School in Oadby. He became interested in electronics.

Career

John Deacon joined his first band, The Opposition, as a rhythm guitarist, but a year later, switched to playing bass.

Along with being a musician, Deacon also served as the band’s archivist, and he remained with them for four years.

After that, he earned a First Class Honors degree in Electronics from Chelsea College and saw Queen perform live for the first time.

He then became the last member to join when they lost their bassist in early 1971, and he played his first show at the College of Estate Management.

Deacon didn’t know it then, but he was set to become one of the richest rockstars in the world as a member of Queen.

Bassist & Songwriter

John Deacon was credited on Queen’s first album in 1973 as Deacon John, to make him seem more interesting.

However, he requested his real name be used in the credits, which was done on all subsequently released albums.

Deacon started writing for Queen’s third album, Sheer Heart Attack, with the songs “Misfire” and “Stone Cole Crazy.”

He also played some of the guide guitar sections when Brian May was hospitalized during recording with hepatitis.

In 1975, his song “You’re My Best Friend,” written for his future wife, was included on Queen’s fourth album A Night at the Opera

After that, he wrote the wildly popular “Another One Bites The Dust” in 1980, which quickly became one of the band’s best-selling singles.

Deacon continued collaborating with Freddie Mercury throughout the 80s, helping the band move their sound towards disco.

Deacon’s Final Years

John Deacon’s work with Mercury culminated in the band’s 1992 album Hot Space, where he played the opening of “Staying Power.”

He also insisted on playing the guitar on “Back Chat,” a song that was his own composition which May’s style didn’t suit.

However, this album proved to be commercially unsuccessful, and Queen returned to their former sound with their subsequent albums.

By the mid-80s, Deacon started working with other bands and artists as well, including Elton John, Bad Company, and The Pretenders.

At this point, he considered his songwriting to be as important as his musical skills, stating he wouldn’t have been satisfied with only playing guitar.

Unfortunately, in November 1991, Freddie Mercury passed away and his death upset Deacon so much that his career saw a significant reduction.

After playing with Queen three more times, including at The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness, John Deacon retired from music.

Deacon’s Retirement

After retiring, John Deacon appeared briefly with his bandmates in 1997 to record Queen’s final song “No-One but You (Only the Good Die Young).”

However, he later spoke unfavorably about Robbie Williams and Brian May’s “We Are the Champions” cover, which was released on A Knight’s Tale.

Since then, he has remained out of the limelight and even chose not to attend Queen’s induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.

He also didn’t join the Queen + Paul Rodgers collaboration, though May has stated he is involved with the business side of the band.

In 2014, following the Queen + Adam Lambert North American Tour, May admitted he had no contact with Deacon aside from talking about finances.

May spoke to Rock FM Spain in 2022, stating that he didn’t think Deacon would ever perform again and that they still have very little contact.

When he was 20, Stevie Wonder released the album Where I’m Coming From in 1971, though it was poorly received.

Soon after, he signed a new contract with Motown Records which gave him a much higher royalty rate than what he was earning.

In 1972, he released Talking Book, which featured his no. 1 hit songs “Superstition,” and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life.”

Soon after, he was honored by the UN Special Committee Against Apartheid for his stance against racism in South Africa.

He then made an appearance on Bill Cosby’s The Cosby Show and, the following year, released the album In Square Circle

In 1986, he dueted with Bruce Springsteen on the track “We Are the World” and took part in the AIDs-inspired “That’s What Friends Are For” charity song.
