It was a show about nothing, but its cast certainly became something thanks to its runaway success. The core four of Jerry Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Michael Richards all became household names during Seinfeld's nine-season run. Each had their ups and downs, trying to capitalize on that stardom after the show ended. Their struggles to land a show that approached Seinfeld's massive popularity led to the coining of the phrase "Seinfeld curse." However, at least one successfully broke that "curse" all these years later.

Ahead, we break down the career paths of the four stars of Seinfeld following its 1998 conclusion, as well as the actors behind some of the show's fan-favorite side characters.

Jerry Seinfeld can look back at Seinfeld as just one chapter in a long, successful career. After the show ended in 1998, he continued writing, acting, and, of course, doing stand-up. In 2004, he produced The Seinfeld Story, a TV movie documentary, before he later joined the rest of the cast on Curb Your Enthusiasm's Seinfeld reunion in 2009. From 2010 to 2011, Seinfeld served as a writer on The Marriage Ref, before launching his online series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

In 2020, he wrote the book Is This Anything?, which he described to EW as a "written document of my work, for whatever value it might have to other young comics." The same year, Seinfeld released his first original stand-up routine since 1998 for his Netflix special, 23 Hours to Kill. He has continued to do stand-up comedy tours since then, as well as co-wrote, produced, directed, and stars in Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story (2024) — vaguely based on the true story of the invention of the popular Kellogg's toaster pastry.

Seinfeld has been married to his wife Jessica, a cookbook author and philanthropist, since 1999. They share three children.

Since her Seinfeld days, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has worked on many series, including Watching Ellie, Arrested Development, The Simpsons, Web Therapy, and The New Adventures of Old Christine. She won six consecutive Emmys for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Selina Meyer on HBO's Veep. Broadening her horizons, Louis-Dreyfus also joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in 2021, a role she has played in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Black Widow (2021), and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). She will reprise the role for Thunderbolts in 2025, the film slated to close out Phase 5 of the MCU.

Louis-Dreyfus likened the end of Veep to that of Seinfeld when it was wrapping up in 2019. It was "really tough," she told EW. “I’m relishing every second of [the final season] because I’ve been through the end of a series on multiple occasions. But this will be the second time in my life in which I know it’s coming to a close by our own fruition because we made the decision — and it’s a bittersweet moment.”

After first meeting while at Northwestern University, Louis-Dreyfus married filmmaker Brad Hall in 1987. They have two sons.

Much of Jason Alexander's post-Seinfeld life involves varied guest stints on television shows, such as Friends, Malcolm in the Middle, Monk, and more. The actor also joined his Seinfeld costars on Curb Your Enthusiasm in 2001 and 2009 and played recurring roles on Young Sheldon and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Alexander has delved into voice work, lending his talent to animated series including TripTank, Robot Chicken, Kody Kapow, and Harley Quinn.

Alexander has been nominated for eight Primetime Emmys, seven of which were for Seinfeld, but he never brought home hardware for the role. "Every year, I lost to either David Hyde Pierce or Michael Richards, so how could that feel unjust?" Alexander told the Observer in 2017. "Not that losing didn’t matter, but winning was never vital to my sense of accomplishment."

The Tony award-winning actor has been married to Daena Title since May 1982 and they have two sons.

Michael Richards (Kramer)

Two years after the end of Seinfeld, Michael Richards starred on The Michael Richards Show for seven episodes before it came to an end. However, Richards' post-Seinfeld career was marred by a racist rant at a comedy club in 2006. Yet, since then, he has appeared on Curb Your Enthusiasm's reunion, a 2012 episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee; starred on Kirstie from 2013 to 2014; and appeared in the Christian film Faith, Hope & Love (2019).

Richards told Charlie Rose in 1997 how he developed Kramer's iconic entrances. "I know that I came in to catch up with the scene — something was happening very quickly in the scene — and I come bolting in. It got a laugh," he said. "I felt that that represented Kramer. That was the essence of the character because I felt that's how the character steps into life. He just comes into things."

Richards shares a daughter with his first wife, to whom he was married to for 18 years. He has been married to Beth Skipp since 2010 and they have one son.

Wayne Knight (Newman)

Aside from his voice-over work, Wayne Knight appeared as Officer Don in more than 100 episodes of 3rd Rock From the Sun after Seinfeld. Since then, he's stayed consistently busy, appearing on The Exes, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair, as well as in films like 12 Mighty Orphans (2021), Darby and the Dead (2022), and more. In addition to those onscreen credits, Knight also reprised his Seinfeld role in a 2020 anti-Trump ad.

Before Seinfeld ended, Knight was all over the big screen, appearing in Basic Instinct (1992), Jurassic Park (1993), and Space Jam (1996), among others. "Ironically, Seinfeld ended all that," Knight told Vice in 2015. "It practically obliterated my film career in some ways, because by being on something that iconic and being that known for that character, it made it much more difficult as a character actor to disappear into film."

Knight shares a son with his second wife, Clare de Chenu.

Heidi Swedberg (Susan Ross)

Heidi Swedberg had brief appearances on many shows following Susan's untimely death on Seinfeld, including Roswell, ER, and Gilmore Girls. She was last seen on screen as Olivia Maxwell on HawthoRNe in 2010.

Swedberg also released two albums in the kid-friendly band, Heidi Swedberg and the Sukey Jump Band, in which she sings and plays ukulele. She picked up the instrument for a role and began playing seriously shortly after. “You hand someone a ukulele, you can teach them those three chords in one day, and all of a sudden they’re completely empowered,” she told the Whittier Daily News. “People who thought they’re not musical — say they don’t know how — realize ‘I can play anything I want.’ It’s such an incredible moment.”

She was married to Philip Holahan from 1994 until 2019 and has two daughters from that relationship.

In 2001, Patrick Warburton took on the role of the Tick on the Fox TV series, which only lasted one season. He went on to play Jeb Denton on Less Than Perfect from 2003 to 2006, followed by a long run as Jeff Bingham on Rules of Engagement from 2007 to 2013. Warburton has also done loads of voice work, including roles as Kronk in The Emperor's New Groove (2000), Brock Samson on The Venture Bros., and Joe Swanson on Family Guy. He appeared in Ted (2012) and its 2015 sequel, Space Force, and portrayed Lemony Snicket on Netflix's A Series of Unfortunate Events from 2017 to 2019.

Despite a boatload of credits, he still counted Seinfeld among his favorites more than a decade after the show ended. "My agent called up and said we got a guest spot on Seinfeld — which was very exciting to me," Warburton, speaking about how he got his role on the show, told the AV Club in 2013. "That’s my favorite show. My wife and I sat down every Thursday night and watched that, and so that was just a great opportunity."

After first meeting in college, Warburton has been married to Cathy Jennings since 1991. The couple shares three sons and one daughter.

John O'Hurley (J. Peterman)

John O'Hurley has filled most of his time with voice work, voicing Walter Bunny on The Looney Tunes Show, Roger Doofenshmirtz on Phineas and Ferb, and King Neptune in the SpongeBob SquarePants franchise. O'Hurley is possibly best known post-Seinfeld as a semi-finalist on the first season of Dancing With the Stars, host of Family Feud from 2006 to 2010, and — every year since 2002 — host of the National Dog Show that NBC airs on Thanksgiving.

We know what he's been up to, but fans have wondered what J. Peterman would be doing today. "I really think his penchant for poetry and travel would have gotten the better of him," O'Hurley told PEOPLE Now in 2019, "and he'd be off in Papua New Guinea, learning the gentle art of bikini waxing."

O’Hurley has been married to his second wife, Lisa Mesloh, since August 2004. They have one son together.

Bryan Cranston (Tim Whatley)

Bryan Cranston found huge TV success following his time on Seinfeld, playing Hal on Malcolm in the Middle for six years before taking on his award-winning role as Walter White on Breaking Bad for five seasons. In 2022, he reprised that role on the spinoff series Better Call Saul. He then scored the lead role as Michael Desiato on Showtime's Your Honor. However, Cranston has also conquered the big screen with features like Godzilla (2014), Why Him? (2016), The Upside (2017), Isle of Dogs (2018), and Jerry and Marge Go Large (2022). On stage, Cranston has earned Tonys for his work in Broadway's All the Way and the National Theatre transfer of Network. He's also spent time behind the camera directing seven episodes of Malcolm in the Middle, three episodes of Breaking Bad, and single episodes of many shows, including The Office, Modern Family, and Your Honor.

While Cranston has gone on to become a star, he has frequently talked about how much he loved being on the Seinfeld set. "We had to stop filming a number of times, because Jerry could not stop laughing at a variety of different takes," he told Rolling Stone in 2014. "When that's the reason you have to postpone shooting, you know, it's a pretty good day, I'd say."

Cranston shares a daughter with his second wife, Robin Dearden.

After appearing on Seinfeld, Danny Woodburn went on to guest-star on a variety of shows, including Charmed, Passions, Bones, The Bold and the Beautiful, and Billions. The actor also voiced Splinter in the 2014 big-screen remake of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and joined former Seinfeld costar Jason Alexander in 2020's Faith Based.

Woodburn has credited Seinfeld as part of the reason he's had so many opportunities since he first appeared on the show during its fifth season. "The offers definitely started coming in," he told Philadelphia Magazine in a 1999 interview. "In 1993, I was selling cowboy boots in Studio City. After my first Seinfeld episode in 1994, I never had another day job."

The actor has been married to writer-actor Amy Buchwald since 1998.

Jerry Stiller (Frank Costanza)

After Seinfeld, Jerry Stiller took on another long-running role, appearing as Arthur Spooner on The King of Queens for more than 200 episodes from 1998 to 2007. He then spent a year voicing Principal Sticker on the TV series Fish Hooks. Stiller also popped up in several films like Zoolander (2001), Hairspray (2007), and Zoolander No. 2 (2016) before he died of natural causes in 2020 at age 92.

Stiller wasn't the first actor to play Frank on the show. He was offered the role but didn't take it. "They said they want you to play the father of George Costanza on Seinfeld, and I said, ‘Who’s Seinfeld?'" Stiller said in a Pioneers of Television interview years later. "I said, ‘Well, I am in a Broadway show. I am about to rehearse. I pass. [They said] ‘What?!’ I pass. I don’t want to do it." Fortunately, Larry David came back to him after the Broadway show closed.

Stiller was married to fellow comedian and actor Anne Meara from 1954 until her death in 2015. They shared two children, daughter Amy and son Ben.

Estelle Harris' best-known role, besides Estelle, may arguably be as the voice of Mrs. Potato Head in the Toy Story films. She also appeared as Muriel on The Suite Life of Zack and Cody and Nana on Greetings From Home. The actress died from natural causes in 2022 at age 93.

"People call us dysfunctional," Harris told EW of her on-screen Costanza family in 1994, "but I don’t see it."

Harris was married to her husband, Sy, from 1953 until his death in 2021. They are survived by three children.

Barney Martin (Morty Seinfeld)

After Seinfeld, Barney Martin was only involved in three projects before his death: He played a role in the television movie I Married a Monster (1998) before voicing Ambassador Major on the series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and appearing as as Maury in the 2004 series Center of the Universe. In 2005, he died of cancer at age 82.

Martin later said that the show's success made it hard to land other roles. "If I play a priest or something, they'll say, 'Hey, that's Morty Seinfeld playing the priest!" he told EW for The Ultimate Guide to Seinfeld. "In that sense, it's hurt me, but I wouldn't change it for all the money in China."

Martin was married to his wife, Catherine, from 1942 until his death.

Liz Sheridan (Helen Seinfeld)

Liz Sheridan appeared on a few television series following Seinfeld, including Complete Savages and Numb3rs, before voicing Mrs. Rothberg in an episode of American Dad in 2007. She also starred in the 2009 Marc Fienberg film, Play the Game. Sheridan died from natural causes in 2022 at age 93.

Sheridan expressed similar sentiments as Martin about how hard it was to get work after appearing in Seinfeld. However, she also expressed gratitude for what the role became. "I have to put lipstick on every time I go out of the house," she shared in The Ultimate Guide to Seinfeld. "People yell at me going by in cars. I love that, and any actor who tells you they don't is lying."

The Seinfeld matriarch was married to Dale Wales from 1985 until his death in 2003.
