Boardwalk Empire's Patricia Arquette, 45, goes without make-up and looks radiant in work out gear

She's known for her icy blue eyes and blonde locks, and they seem to be enough to prove Patricia Arquette a natural beauty.

The 45-year-old actress stepped out without make-up to pick up some items from a local drug store, wearing Lycra work out gear and looking fit as can be.

Certainly the get-up was a far cry from the vintage waves, red lipstick and twenties garms Patricia wears in Boardwalk Empire.

In the Prohibition era drama, Arquette plays Sall Wheet, the love interest of Steve Buscemi's character Nucky, who begins as Florida bartender, to become a partner in his criminal business.

In one shocking scene, the actress had to punch Buscemi in the face as a form of foreplay, which she said was 'pretty funny' to film.

'I know that sounds horrible — in my real life, obviously, violence in a relationship is not to be taken lightly,' Patricia explained to Vulture. 'And yet, these people, they are from some different time, a time when violence was much more... I mean, people were smacking each other around!'

The actress - who is the sister of fellow actors David, Roseanna and Alexis Arquette - has starred in many a Hollywood film, before becoming best known for her role as Allison Dubois in the long-running TV series Medium.

But over the last twelve years, Patricia has been filming an untitled project with Ethan Hawke and director Richard Linklater, which started in 2002, and ended production this October.

The artistic project - which was originally called Boyhood - follows the the story of a divorced couple, played by Ethan and Patricia, trying to raise their young son (Ellar Salmon), and revisits them in short vignettes as the boy grows from the age of six to eighteen.

Untitled 12-Year Project is set for a 2014 release.

Speaking about the project, Arquette said: 'Honestly, I've never had that kind of experience, because it was like our secret project.

'No one knew what we were doing, and we would go do this every year for twelve years. The strange thing is, it's not really something I want to share with the world now. Of course I want it to come out, but a part of me is like, "I don't want to share it with the world."

She added: 'It's such a cool, secret, little part of my life, my artistic life, and then you give it to the world, and they get to decide what they think about it, and it becomes their thing. Right now, it's our thing.'
