Criterion Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid 4K UHD (1973) Criterion Collection

Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (1973) coming to 4K from Criterion in July! This 4-disc set (2 UHD / 2 BD) will include 3 different versions of the film.

Quote:
4K UHD + BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES
  • New 4K digital restoration of the 50th Anniversary Release, supervised by editors Paul Seydor and Roger Spottiswoode, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
  • New 4K digital restoration of the Original Theatrical Release, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
  • Audio commentary for the 50th Anniversary Release featuring Seydor, Spottiswoode, and critic Michael Sragow
  • Two 4K UHD discs of the films presented in Dolby Vision HDR and two Blu-rays with the films and special features
  • New 2K digital master of director Sam Peckinpah’s Final Preview Cut, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
  • Dylan in Durango, a new interview with author Clinton Heylin about the film’s soundtrack
  • Passion & Poetry: Peckinpah’s Last Western, a new program about the making of the film
  • Archival interview with actor James Coburn
  • Trailer and TV spots
  • English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
  • PLUS: An essay by author and critic Steve Erickson
Quote:
Sam Peckinpah’s cycle of genre-redefining westerns came to a close with this blood- and dust-caked elegy for the American West, which marries his renegade style with a fatalistic sense of finality. As newly minted lawman Pat Garrett (James Coburn) stalks the outlaw Billy the Kid (Kris Kristofferson) across the plains, their old friendship is twisted into rivalry, and mythic ideals of freedom come up against an emerging ruling-class order—all to the strains of a haunting soundtrack by Bob Dylan (who also appears as the mercurial Alias). Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid—presented here for the first time in three separate versions—stands as perhaps the maverick auteur’s richest, most mature work, a world-weary ballad that bears the solemn weight of history passing into legend.

Ugh, yet another release that doesn't port over the Warner extras.

Finally! I'm assuming the "50th Anniversary Release" is the same as the version Seydor edited in 2006? Or are there differences?

So, is the 50th anniversary edition another cut of the movie?
Theres 3 different versions of the movie, 106 minute theatrical release, the 122 minute version which I believe is labelled the Turner Preview version and is allegedly the cut that Peckinpah handed in and the 115 minute Seydor cut that was released in 2005 on DVD.
Im guessing that the Turner version is the one labelled as Final Preview Cut.
The run time listed on Criterion is 106 minutes which is the original theatrical run time.

Spottiswoode wasn’t involved with the 2006 edit. I guess that he gave some feedback to Seybor, and that this is a refined version of this 2006 edit. I hope that they stick with the sung version of Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door instead of the instrumental Peckinpah wanted to use as an olive branch to usual composer Jerry Fielding, who had been sidelined to make room for Bob Dylan.

Also, if they indeed provide Peckinpah’s final preview cut, the scene between Garrett and his wife should be there. It was removed from his personal copy when they needed extra material to make up for the deleted scenes for the TV broadcast, and it was forgotten when Spottiswoode assembled the 1988 cut. The 2006 edit has it.

With sales taxes suddenly added to Criterion's sales (perhaps my move to NC is to blame) and the increased threshold for free shipping combined with my recently having hit the most recent gift card, leaving many more purchases to go until I earn another, maybe it is time to move away from ordering from Criterion directly...

Yeah, I hope the preview cut here fixes that. The Preview Cut including that scene would be my go to version.

NOnononnonono.

Peckinphah's cut, the so-called Turner Preview Cut, must be on the 4K disc, not the absolute abomination that is Paul Seydor fan edit. Utter joke. Absolute disgrace. Please complain to Criterion.

The Seydor cut is not an "abomination".

Criterion had it since 2017. No idea why they sit on some titles so long, but it did benefit many of the Warner licenses like this, Mean Streets, Roaring Twenties, and Lone Star which got 4K's because of that delay.
