Full job description

The City of Pasadena's Library and Information Services Department has an excellent career opportunity for a library paraprofessional to work as a Library Technician in a full time capacity. The Library Technician will have knowledge of library support operations, exhibit excellent customer service abilities, and possess the technical knowledge and maturity level to serve in a lead support role to lower level staff. The successful candidate will have familiarity of Pasadena's Library programs and services, be enthusiastic about the Library's goals and objectives and participate in programs and outreach activities to connect with and support the Pasadena community.

IDEAL CANDIDATE
The ideal candidate will have a strong customer service background with experience planning programs, outreach and related events, preferably in the public sector such as public libraries, parks and recreation, public schools, camps and the like. This person will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, the ability to take initiative and stay organized, and demonstrate a strong work ethic.

Essential Functions

  • Provides customer service to patrons in person, over the phone, or virtually to answer questions, locate information and educate the public in uses of library resources; refers questions to a Librarian when appropriate.
  • Leads as well as assists Librarians with various programs including library visits, local history projects, "offsite" literacy programs and outreach, assembling materials/equipment for programming and setup for library events.
  • Represents the library in meetings with other public agencies, community groups and the public and speaks before groups on library programs and services; may act as liaison with various organizations and vendors.
  • In a lead capacity, provides work guidance and direction and participates in the work of other library staff; participates in scheduling, assigning and monitoring work of other employees for completeness, accuracy and conformance with City/departmental standards; provides input to supervisor on employee work performance and behaviors.
  • Performs circulation-related tasks including check-in and check-out of materials; answers/researches reference inquiries; explains library policies and procedures to patrons; processes overdue library materials and phone renewals; issues receipts for payment of damaged or lost books and materials.
  • Maintains facility staffing and programming schedules; secures appropriate resources as needed.
  • Contributes to collection development by weeding outdated materials and providing input on patron needs.
  • Handles facility maintenance and library equipment, issues and monitors security concerns; troubleshoots problems with patrons; maintains library inventory and supplies.
  • May be responsible for opening and closing a library facility and for securing the facility, its contents and premises following established procedures.
  • Keeps abreast of current trends in library science and information technology through various forms of training, reviewing professional literature and participating in professional organizations.
  • Compiles data and information and develops library activity reports and statistics regarding circulation and reference services.
  • May be responsible for creating, maintaining and monitoring hourly, daily, weekly and monthly staff schedules for the department.
  • Acts in the absence of a Librarian, as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Graduation from an accredited two-year college with an Associate of Arts degree and at least three years of progressively responsible experience in performing paraprofessional duties in a public library; or two years of experience in the City of Pasadena Public Library in the class of Library Assistant.
  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in library sciences, liberal arts, social sciences, education, or a related field is preferred.

VACANCY INFORMATION
There is currently one full-time vacancy in the Public Services Division of the Libraries & Information Services Department at Villa Parke Library - vacancy is subject to change at time of interview. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future. Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one-year probationary work period.

Special Requirements

Must possess a valid California Class C driver's license and comply with the City's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy during the course of employment.

Some positions may be required to work nights and weekends.
