Everybody writes about it, when you mention to visit Cannes. For us, this red carpet, and handprints was total waste of time.
It looks pretty poor, building itself is like comunist arena or something, and for us Cannes is really very nice place and has to offer way better things than this.

May 2012 we sailed on the NCL Epic from Barcelona, Naples, Rome, Pisa, Cannes, Marseilles, and back to Barcelona. The Port at Cannes is right in the downtown area. We rode tenders to the pier and spent the day walking around the town. The Cannes film festival was going on while we were there making it very crowded and busy. It was a nice port not to take a Shore Excursion at and to just spend the day exploring the town. We felt very safe just walking around on our own. If you get off at the pier and walk toward the city and bear to the right along the bayfront and follow the first main road you come to that runs parell to the shore you will run into the red carpet and the front of the building they hold the Film Festival in. It is just a few blocks from the pier. If you get off at the pier and walk away from the water you come to the marina portion of the waterfront that has many boats docked there. If you walk a few more blocks away from the water watch for a narrow alleyway lined with shops. It runs for many blocks to the right and is lined with shops and diners and the narrow road/alley is closed to vehicle traffic. It is a good place to shop/eat. Also near the Film Festival is a Tourist office. Nearby there you can go on a small trolly/train ride through the town that points out hightlights. We did not do this but would the next time. It offered two tours each 20 minutes long. You could take both for about 15 euros. Cannes was a very nice port that we will visit again someday.

We were there on May 2014 during the Festival de Cannes.
A lot of people, not much to do!
Don't waste your time there just to see a red carpet.

Transport around the French Riviera is brilliant. We took trips most days by local bus and by train. The local buses are 1.5 Euros for a single journey -- whether two stops or Nice airport to Cannes (one and a half hours). We also went to Ventimiglia on the Italian Riviera on a double deck electric train. The journey through the mountains was a treat in itself. One word of warning - the railway station in Cannes is being completely re-built and is like a chaotic building site. It is best to take your time and get tickets the day before and sort out where the platform etc is.
We spent a week based in Cannes in Oct. We enjoyed it a lot and found it a very diverse city. The front with the Palais des Festivals and the huge Gucci and Chanel shops and the million pound plus yachts was just like the movies. Around the bay to the East was a sailing, boating area with bars and restaurants. Around the bay to the West was the old Medieval town with lots of historic interest. Inland (the other side of the railway tracks!!) was where the locals lived with North African restaurants and little parks with boules players and typically French corner bars with a few seats on the pavement. We were staying inland as the prices by the front are very high. We would definately go again.

Although it was not festival time, we visited the place for some photo op. The weather wasn't too great, so ended up not enjoying the walk as much as we liked, but still were happy to have visited the place.

Famous for its film festival, this beach side town is home to wealthy Europeans during winters. Many good hotels, pubs & eateries available and the evenings are enjoyable with good music/dance.

There are more interesting places to visit in Cannes. Not much to do and the casino - with options like Monte Carlo - make this a place lower on the list to visit, I think.

Can you go inside the film festival on a tour? Is it open to the public?

Bonjour,
