SAFE FIREARM STORAGE RESOURCES
House Bill 3, (88th Texas Legislature) requires the Texas School Safety Center, in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), to provide school districts information and other resources regarding the safe storage of firearms, including information on section 46.13 of the Texas Penal Code, for distribution to parents/guardians and community.
The Texas DPS has created a public relations campaign – Keep ’Em Safe Texas – that offers free downloadable resources to promote safe gun storage. Below you will find links to resources in English and Spanish.

PARENT NOTIFICATION – HOUSE BILL 1225 – PARENT/LEGAL GUARDIAN/TEACHER REQUEST STAAR PAPER FORMAT – PAPER REQUEST WINDOW HAS BEEN EXTENDED!
Katy ISD has implemented STAAR online testing for the past three years at all levels. STAAR online tests enable students to utilize embedded supports that cannot be replicated on paper formatted assessments. The Texas Legislature passed a bill that allows school districts to administer STAAR in a paper format to any student whose parents/legal guardians/teachers request this format. A paper request is contingent upon the order in which they are received. Please note that the amount of paper testing cannot exceed three percent of the district enrollment. Thus, a request for a paper formatted test is not a guarantee for a paper assessment. Further guidance from the Texas Education Agency will be released early September.
Students who are determined to receive the paper format are accepting the following parameters:
- Students will receive Interims, DLAs, and Literacy Module Assessments (elementary) in the paper format.
- Students may test separately from online testers.
- Students may test on a separate day than their peers.
- Content Language Supports and Text-to-Speech are only delivered using the online STAAR testing system.
- Any assessment prior to the district determination of paper format will follow standard campus practice.
Parents should consider child’s current STAAR scores, speak with his or her child about online versus paper testing, and review the online testing platform. Parents can review the online testing platform by clicking the green “Sign In” button on the Texas Assessment website. The practice online testing environment is designed to familiarize parents and students with the available tools and the various types of test questions.
Due to strict deadlines outlined in House Bill 1225, Katy ISD will open a paper format request window for parents on September 1, 2023, at 5 PM, and close the window on September 11, 2023, at 12 PM. For paper requests, Access the STAAR Paper Request Form. Requests must be made through the link to be considered.
