Pacific Rim 2’s score is arguably his best work to date. The piece that will likely set itself apart most comes early in the film, found on the track “Scrapper Chase.” Scrapper’s heroic and lighthearted theme really set the tone right out the gates for a fun and great overall film. Textbook example of how a soundtrack can help set the direction a movie is headed.
If you’re a fan of Ramin Djawadi’s score of the first movie, you’re going to be very pleased to hear this is a perfect successor on all beats. There are even a few cameo appearances by Pacific Rim’s iconic theme at just the right moments, as well as other pieces of music from the first you will recognize.
Very pleased that the sequel delivered on all counts and may even stand above the original. Movies like this are the reason I love going to the movies. Action, fun, spectacle, thrills, and done so in a way that simply doesn’t suck one bit. It’s a hard line to walk when making genre films, but Pacfic Rim: Uprising pulls it off honestly, and full
of heart.
The first Pacific Rim is a contender for my favorite film of all time, and a large part of that was the soundtrack. It was epic, it was bombastic, it maintained themes throughout the length of the film, and it helped heighten the awesomeness of seeing giant robots punch giant monsters.
This score does what most scores do: just music in the background to set the mood. Which is fine! That's what it's for, right? But it missed the punch and the dynamism of the first film. Sounding more like Daft Punk's score for Tron: Legacy at times, this score takes awhile to really get going.
When I saw that Ramin Djawadi wasn't returning to work on this score, I was a little disappointed, but I had never heard from this new artist before, so I was looking forward to seeing what thy could bring to the table, and sadly, it's not what it could have been.
If you loved the first soundtrack, lower your expectations before you listen to this one.
I don't regret my purchase, but waiting 5 years for a sequel to one of my favorite soundtracks to end up with this was definitely a disappointment. (But not nearly as disappointing as Alexandre Desplat's score for Godzilla).
There were times that the soundtrack mirrored Daft Punk's 'Tron: Legacy' almost to a 'T' I mean, exact key and rhythms. Took me right out of the feel of the album.
And then there are the Lyric songs sprinkled through. I get that they play a part or are used as background in the movie (I really can't say, I have not seen it yet) but they break up the flow, and as much as I love Run The Jewels, having a song from them with cuss words constantly flowing, was very jarring. I will have to edit those off the playlist before I let my son listen to the score.
If they were going to have the Lyric songs, they should have put them on the end of the line up or a separate release.
It was a good attemp, but it just feels very generic in scope. No realy themes that I catch right away, and little use of the original thematic elements.
