He was the son of Margrave Johann I of Brandenburg-Stendal and Sophia of Denmark. He was born about 1238 and died in either 1308 or 1309. His nickname, "With the Arrow," originated when he survived being hit in the head by an arrow and apparently survived at least a year with it in his head.
