The Origin of Rice Bohol Version
The Rice Myth (Bohol)
Long time ago all the land bordering the sea, was ruled by the mighty Aglao, the King of the “Spirit Hunters”. These spirits were powerful and numerous. Their chief recreation was to spend their time hunting deer, unless Aglao needed them to drive away to their common enemy, the terrible spirit of the sea, Bacobaco, who is also very fond of deer’s meat. He would transform as a giant turtle and then sally forth into the hunting grounds of the hunters and gorge himself with deer to the neck. Aglao would greatly resent this, but he was powerless compared to this monster. So one day he consulted Wasi, one of the spirit hunters. Wasi then suggested to ask Blit, his brother; the spirit othe wind, for assistance because he is the one who is capable of killing the giant turtle. Aglao followed his advice. He went to meet Blit and ask for help. Blit agreed because he himself is an enemy of Bacobaco. The following day the huge turtle appeared again, but Blit was quiet ready for him this time. But as he carefully placed an arrow to his bow, Bacobaco saw him and immediately hid his whole body beneath his shield. The arrow struck exactly at the place where his head had been thrust forward only a few moments before. Before he could recharge his weapon Bacobaco escaped. Bacobaco tried to hide in a lake at the foot of Mount Pinatubo, but finding the water clear, he climbed to the peak where he started digging a hole. “Bit pieces of rock, mud, dust and other things began to fall in showers all around the mountain. During all the while (Bacobaco) howled and howled so loudly that the earth shook under the foot of Blit, Aglao and his hosts. The fire that escaped from his mouth became so thick and so hot that the pursuing party had to run away.” “For three days,” the story goes, “the turtle continues to burrow itself, throwing rocks, muds, ashes and thundering away all the time in deafening wars. At the end of three days he stopped, and all was quiet again in the mountain. But the lake, with its clear water, was now filled with rocks, and mud covered everything. On the summit of Pinatubo was a great hole, through which Bacobaco had passed, and from which the smoke could be seen constantly coming out. This showed that he was already quiet, he was still full of anger, since fire continued to come from his mouth.”

Owen, who usually cannot even hit a ball past the pitcher, kills John’s mother with a foul ball in a fateful little league baseball game. This is considered fateful, not because there is in any way to proof that it was “meant to be”, but because the event and set of occurrences leading up to the event are so incredibly random that it is difficult for the human conscious to comprehend this happening without any divine reason. At the age of eleven, Owen already believes that he born of an immaculate conception, so he does not rationalize this act in any other way than an act of God. In order to communicate this to John, he removes the claws of their beloved stuffed armadillo. Without its claws, there is no way for the armadillo to stand upright; it is now truly helpless and dependent…

After the woman is placed on the turtle’s back, she wants to know if there is any soil for her to plant the roots that she was able to hold onto from the sky-world as she fell downward. After several animals unsuccessfully ventured to the bottom of the ocean, the muskrat is the only one able to gather some soil for the woman. The the woman began to walk in a circle around it, moving in the direction the sun goes. Since she has gone missing from Tutokanula, he spent many days looking her, but no luck has prevailed for the chief, and since he was gone for so long, the people of his tribe, and he, have left and the land has become unbearable. “When Tisayac returned again to her valley, she was horrified to find it barren and her people gone. When she learned that Tutokanula had forgotten his people, had left them to fend for themselves without the benefit of his great wisdom, and had spent many days and nights searching and longing for her, she cried out in despair. Kneeling upon a mighty dome of rock, Tisayac prayed with all her heart” to the Great Spirit to restore the land to the way it was before she and Tutokanula had left. (Schlosser). Great Spirit has heard her, swooping down from the heavens, “he spread his hands over the valley. The green of new life poured forth over the land; trees blossomed, flowers bloomed, birds sang. Then he struck a mighty blow against the mountains and they broke apart, leaving a pathway for the melting snow to flow through. The water swirled and washed down upon the land, spilling over rocks, pooling into a lake and then wandering afar to spread life to other places. In the valley, the corn grew tall again, and the people came back to their home.” Then Tutokanula had heard…

It took us another hour in order for one of us to catch a fish. During that hour, there was a lot of frustration and yawning. Since we all gave up on trying to find a manatee, we began to bring in all of the plates that were once filled with food and the fishing poles. But, as soon as we started to get everything together, we heard a noise coming from the water that sounded like something was breathing. Well, to our surprise, that was the sea cow we were hoping to see. The sky around us was too dark to see near us, and the tiny lanterns on the dock didn’t help too…
