This book is about a boys first love / love experience. He goes through several years of life and realizes everything is compared / measured to his first love. It has historical value in helping this generation understand the civilian side and jewish holocaust side of the third riech. It does make you question your present values, enriches alot of deep thinking if you were put in the SS War and what you would do either for or against the holocaust victims. Seeing Germany during this time will make you see that there are both sides to every story. I liked the book because it taught me that by reading, it will enrich and allow me to understand alot more, becoming more educated, so that life's decisions can have more educated answers (to the deep questions in your own head). I disliked this book because of the child molestation, a 15 year old boy vs. a 30+ year old woman.Read full review
I selected this book for reading because it had been an Oprah Book Club pick, and because it was a #1 National Bestseller. Within the first 25 pages of the book, the author made me laugh! A fifteen-year-old teen, covered in coal dust, in the presence of his soon-to-be mature lover made these people real. From that moment on, I accepted their relationship - odd as it was - as one with integrity and human need. Schlink kept me guessing. What were the secrets being guarded so fiercely by Hanna? The key to the answer was in the title, but I missed the clue until the book began drawing its curtains for its quiet ending. Make time for this book. Don't judge Hanna too harshly until you know the deep, black secrets her soul carries. I respected and loved Hanna in the end. I will not soon forget her and her role in the Holocaust.Read full review
I really enjoyed reading the book behind the movie. Of course it explained a lot of stuff the movie didn't explain. I recommend this book.

bought it for a book club...great book. the content was a little bit heavy but an overall fast and easy read.
After seeing the movie I wanted to read the original story. I was not disappointed. the movie followed the book very closely. From the book I felt increased appreciation of the complex psychological and moral aspects of the story.
