Product Description

I love bad movies - love them. Why? Because I also appreciate good film and theatre.
It's these two things combined that make Omega Doom so much fun to watch; Omega Doom is absolute disaster art!
I won't bored you with pedantic details - so let me just put it like this:

If you have ever seen an anime from the 80s or 90s, then take all of the story-telling, expected level of acting, and even the damned cinematography, and the entire movie feels like you are dead-ass watching a Japanese cartoon! IT'S BRILLIANT!
Stoic yet overly-confident protagonist? Check!
4-5 people representing entire unseen factions of people? Check!
Having the "rules" explained to you like it's a video game? Check!
Sound track dropping drum-n-synth bangers left and right? Check!
-You get what I'm trying to say here; it's a live action anime!

Weather or not that is any coincidence with the film being bassed off of Akira Kurosawa's Yojinbo is anyone's guess but the director's.

Very fun to sit down with friends/fam who also enjoy film, and have fun MST3K'ing the hell out of it!

I grew up in the 80s, born in 1977. The 80s had a lot of bad movies, so watching that junk as a pre-teen innoculated me to bad B action. Put a decent actor in a bad B movie, and I am hooked. That' some good watchin'.
About Rutger Hauer: My first Rutger Hauer experience was about age 11, and I saw Blind Fury for the first time. Then I watched "The Hitcher" on HBO a few months later. I became obsessed with everything Rutger Hauer. I have seen a lot of his movies over the years, and I would say his finest role is likely "Blade Runner," and especially the "tears in the rain" speech that he made up/truncated because he forgot his lengthy monologue. I would also (oddly enough) put "Hobo with a Shotgun" pretty high up there too. Oh, and don't forget "Ladyhawke" either.
Anyway, this movie is absolutely terrible, and lame, but Rutger Hauer is in fine form, and because of that I found this QUITE WATCHABLE! Without Hauer, there is NO WAY I could watch this, even with my super 80s vaccine in my headstream. So if you like Rutger Hauer, then you will make it through this movie just fine, and I do recommend it for Rutger Hauer fans. On that note, I just watched his 1992 movie "Split Second" last night, and I have to say that this movie is a better role for Hauer.
That's about all I have to say. On a final few notes I will point out that this movie has a dubbed Eurotrash feel to it, and while I don't think the cheesy robot sounds the characters made as they moved were meant to be intentionally funny, I still found them quite amusing. "Weee-Brrrzt'cheekooo-clip-clip. Whyrrrrr-sheee-chk-chk. Click." I loved it, every choppy move and pre-Matrix-action leap and fight scene.

Omega Doom presents a different scenario for the a post apocalyptic future in which machines have taken over. Rather than the idea of humanity living in capsules and connected to a 3D interactive computer simulation, we are simply extinct, or so the machines believe.

There are some short comings in the movie, including a lack of genuine character development, though this is not particularly surprising given that all the characters are androids. The dialogue has a few weaknesses, though this could be looked at more from the angle of the era in which the movie was filmed. The small cast of characters demonstrates well how the machines took on the all too human trait of fighting against one another once the humans were gone, and this theme is well played and discussed in the course of the movie.

All that having been said, this movie presents a philosophical viewpoint regarding technology and where it could lead, not too dissimilar to Matrix or Terminator, though perhaps bordering more towards Terminator than Matrix. Interestingly, the characters discuss what it meant to be machines still functioning after the disappearance of humanity, and even discuss their own programming and objectives.

In some respects, this is a low level action adventure movie in a science fiction setting with a philosophical bent. Thus, it is both thought provoking and entertaining. However, don't expect any big budget special effects. At the risk of a spoiler, the closest you get is with semi-running gag involving a decapitated head who can't seem to shut up or keep a body.

On a different note, the front of the case reads "Robots rule the Earth. Only one man can stop them." This is inaccurate. The title character, Omega Doom, is a robot just like the rest of the cast. It would be better if it read "Robots still wage war on the Earth. Only one robot can stop them."

Overall, this is a good movie. Limited special effects demonstrate clearly that it was a low budget film for its era, but it tells a good story with a cast of characters who play their parts well, almost leading you to believe that they really are robots. Parts of the storyline can be difficult to follow and some of the characters never make more than a glancing appearance, but still a good film overall. However, if you are looking for big budget CGI and a lot of special effects, this is not the movie for you. If you are looking for an alternative apocalyptic feature with some thought provoking dialogue and just enough action to keep it interesting, you will love it.

Not to give too much away but this is another 'Last Man Standing' except with very few minions to wade through.

There is violence. The setting is post apocalypse human ruins. There were a bunch of extras willing to lay around and play dead as un-rotting androids? in several scenes. The story is barely cohesive and the dialog is borderline awful.

The film is blissfully short but it does offer a rare few chuckles. One of the cuter things is all the shitty machine noises added in for character movement whenever it is convenient lending a sort of 1960s campy element to the bad action.

No blood, no gore, a few robot cavity scens with a little dripping oil, and no nudity.

I gave this a try honestly because I was hoping Tricia Helfer would bring out some super sexy hero or villain like the cover art suggested. Alas, if she was in it at all she was unrecognizable.

I enjoyed it enough overall to not go 1 star, 2 was a stretch.
