- 11kungc16 contributionsA one of a kind Botanical GardenIt is surrounded by residential houses... To get there during a construction season is a challenge with many detours. It is a moderate size garden in comparison. However, it has a unique character in design in layout and design. A great place for photographer to take some picture in flowers, forest, bridge and ponds. There is no in garden restaurant. Howerver, there is a good pizza place behind the garden with 10 min. walk. The green house has some unique collection cannot find elsewhere.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten June 2, 2023
- 32107matthewyDallas, Texas135 contributionsBeautiful gardensWas looking forward to checking out the Thai Pavilion, but it was closed for renovation. Such a shame, but I did have a great time though. There are a few areas within the garden where you sit and relax as well as a tram that takes you around if you do not feel like walking.Visited June 2023Traveled soloWritten July 4, 2023
- Doris R6 contributionsLovely GardensLovely botanical gardens with a wide variety of plants. Excellent areas where plants were showcased and most were well-labeled. The Thai pavilion is especially pretty. There is a tram with narration that will take you around the gardens (about 20 minutes) but we elected to walk so we could spend more time in each area.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 4, 2023
- Emily Lee60 contributionsBeautiful garden! This was so fun to visit. What a beautiful, peaceful garden area. We loved the butterfly exhibit, and walking around the area. We even took a little tour on the cart. I would highly recommend anyone to come here while in Madison.Visited July 2023Written August 15, 2023
- Linda DBillerica, Massachusetts57 contributionsBeautiful and peaceful botanical gardens!I’m so glad I had a chance to visit! I had a hard time getting there thanks to one detour after another but glad I stuck it out. These gardens are in a great spot near the water and are free! The Thai pavilion was gorgeous! I missed the tram hours and have some mobility issues but they have scooters available and the staff was very helpful. I wish I’d had more time to linger. Excellent gift shop too! Don’t miss if in the area.Visited August 2023Traveled soloWritten September 14, 2023
- Cello12345Urbana, Illinois658 contributionsConservatory closes early!Admission to the garden is free. There's a beautiful visitor center with restrooms and a gift shop , and the gardens are nicely kept. When we went, they were setting up for an art exhibit, apparently, and access to parts of the gardens were blocked (I guess they can do that if it's free, but it was a disappointment. We especially wanted to go on the bridge across Starkweather Creek to see what's on the other side!) The place also has a nice-looking Conservatory (which does charge admission). We saved it for last, but got too hot on our walk through the gardens. So, we hopped in the car for a bit of shopping to cool off, returning at 4pm. Big mistake! The Conservatory had just closed, even though the gardens were open until 5. Bummer. Maybe next time.Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 15, 2023
- chiefbluehawkOnalaska, Wisconsin166 contributionsNice setting, inside and out.Two areas, one inside and one outside. Both were very nice. Not a huge garden. Plants etc...weren't labeled as well as some other gardens. It was a nice fall day, so not prime growing season, but still it was very nice. From what it was billed, it met our expectations.Visited September 2023Traveled with friendsWritten September 21, 2023
- missouritouristsSpringfield, Missouri264 contributionsWISH WE HAD MORE TIME TO EXPLOREAlthough we just spent a short time at the botanical garden, it was worthwhile. I was amazed at the number of plants still blooming. Seeing all the bees at work was fascinating. We also saw two hummingbirds bouncing from flower to flower! I can only imagine what the garden looks like in each different season!Visited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 27, 2023

Unfortunately, our visit was not during the most optimal time: it was raining and the early fall was setting in. It was difficult to get the full effect of the gardens under these conditions due to the end of the growing season and the rainy conditions.
You can tell a lot of care and effort goes into these gardens from the staff. The outside gardens are free and you have the freedom to take your time and enjoy the plants, paths, and statues. Well worth the visit. We were there later in the day and we did not visit the indoor facility.

Some botanical gardens are so big that they are overwhelming. Not so at Olbrich Gardens. The gardens are well planned and easily take the visitor through the various features. If you stay outside, there is no admission. There is a small admission to visit the Atrium. The outdoor gardens were decorated for the holidays and were very pretty, even in winter. The gift shop is also well-stocked with interesting items at reasonable prices. I highly recommend.

A surprisingly large urban garden showcasing a wide variety of perennial plants. It’s laid out in a way to encourage wandering and there is a lot to discover as you meander including the bucolic Thai pavilion that was gifted by a Taiwanese Alumni group in 2001. According to the signage, it is the only such building in North America. The 20 plus acres of the garden are free to wander. There is also a small tropical green house that costs $6 (although they do have reciprocity with other gardens-so we got in free). Probably not with $6-a couple of interesting orchids and a few small birds and koi but nothing special.
It’s definitely worth an hour or two if you are in the area.

If you like any garden, you'll like Olbrich Gardens. It is large, and has a great deal of interesting plants. The Thai building is special and the walks are well designed so you feel it is not crowded even if a large number of people are there. It doesn't have the "wow" factor that I want for a fifth star.

These gardens are worth visiting in every season. As a local, I seem to go every three or four months, and each time the gardens seem new. There are many "rooms", with places to sit and look, and meandering paths with sculptures which surprise you around the corner.

My boyfriend and I, along with another couple made plans to come here since we were in town for a wedding. What a pleasant surprise to find there was no fee to walk the grounds. The conservatory was a $6 fee, but we did not end up entering there. This place is unbelievable. So many paths to take, you could be here all day exploring the grounds. We especially loved seeing all the wildlife on the property. The touch and smell section was something we really enjoyed. Typically at botanical gardens you aren't allowed to touch any of the plants so this was especially fun! All in all, we were just in awe of this place. It is clear to see why they have received so many accolades worldwide. The only thing I was disappointed in was the gift shop being closed, but otherwise we had an excellent time!

If you are in Madison, you should definitely make time in schedule to pay a visit. I’m not even a big garden and nature guy, but my family really enjoyed our visit here. The artistic way of making a place peaceful yet beautiful on the eye is something I really appreciated. Definitely will be coming back in spring to see the flowers blossom, thankfully my daughter goes to U of Wisconsin close by!

My husband and I walked around here for a few hours on a Sat morning. From 10 to noon it was free to get in the enclosed dome! The docent inside was lively, informative, and excited to be working. The plants and birds were great. It's lovely inside and outside, and if we didn't go on a day in the 80s with 99 percent humidity we would have stayed even longer. Lots of winding and joining paths so easy to get turned around (there are maps but we didn't grab one). One of the best gardens we've visited, and we've been to a lot!!

Olbrich Botanical Gardens is located on the Capital City bike path, offering easy access to and from the gardens for bikers. However, bikes are not allowed inside the gardens or conservatory. There is plenty of bike parking by the entrance. There is also a B-Cycle station in the parking lot for visitors who wish to rent a bike and ride throughout Madison.

To my knowledge they do not have wheelchairs to rent. But it is wheelchair friendly throughout most of the garden. I have seen many people in the Gardens in wheelchairs. The do have a tram that many ride in throughout the garden. I am not sure if all the gardens are equally accessible. The path to the Thai Garden might be a challenge.

How long does it take to walk through the The Bolz Conservatory? Appt time.
Olbrich
Madison, WI
The beauty of the Bolz Conservatory lies not only in the flora and fauna, but also in the fact that you can take any route you like to explore in your own time.
We recommend approximately one to two hours to really make the most of your tropical experience.
Don't forget it is kept to tropical temperatures, so dress appropriately -- the heat is the limiting factor for time spent inside!
