According to my friend, "It has all the features of the other dating sites that charge a fee, but it's free."

searching the Talk threads for okcupid leads to these results:

    yelp.com/message_board_s…

it's apparently not very well respected here in NYC.

Overall: A bit geek/dork-heavy and young-leaning (especially if you're the guy in your picture, Sal), but fine.

I'm bored with it and considering trying another site (fills the weird hours at the office, honestly, which is my main dating obstacle), but I haven't seen any other decent ones you don't have to pay.

I met my husband on OKCupid, as well as some really good friends. I'm actually still on there for the tests and for helping some friends with their profiles.  If you expect any success on there, you have to answer at least a few hundred questions. If you can get to a thousand questions, then the match percentages are an even better reflection of reality. You also need to be able to wade through a lot of spam, and should be willing to work on your profile and constantly update it, but then again, isn't that the case with most dating or social networking websites?

I wish you luck with your search.

this is gonna sound like bs, but i joined okcupid to write an article for my college paper about online dating, and it wasn't a bad site. in fact, before i really got into yelping it was my guilty pleasure to read the forums (much like talk, here) and the blogs and to check out profiles - from a sociological angle it's just fun to see how people present themselves when they're trying to land dates.

i think okcupid is pretty legit. there are some great/entertaining people on the site and I did in fact meet a great girl from it.

Camelia has it down though; the success of it depends on how much effort you put into messaging people, filling out your profile, and fully using the site, just like with any social networking website. Good luck.

OkCupid is a very well done FREE dating site. It was created by the same people that did SparkNotes with the earnings from selling that site.

Pay no mind to the jaded lovers in here that can't get laid. Because the site creators intention is not revenue, the site tends to be fairly honest in its endeavors. This opposed to a for-pay dating site.

Its actually fun to use and you *can* meet interesting people through it. Obviously standard rules of meeting people online apply.

Also, I recommend to my friends all the time. One of my friends ended up getting 3 dates with decent women the first week he tried it out.

Agree with Josh that it's well done. For a free online dating site, OkCupid isn't skeevy. It sure as hell beats Craigslist or whatever crap is floating out there.

I know a few people who have come out of OkCupid with successful long-term relationships. Go for it Sal, can't hurt.
