Oakley Jupiter: What Are The Different Models And History Of Each

This guide will help you determine which model you own.

The Oakley Jupiter was introduced in 2008 as the latest member of the Frogskins Family. It quickly became a household name. The Oakley Jupiter is only 8 years old and has since produced 5 more versions.

Each model has its own distinct characteristics. The Jupiter name is derived from the name of the tree-frog mascot who accompanies Frogskins. Because they can be subtle, it is not uncommon for the Jupiters' names to be mixed up, which leads to mistakes when ordering the correct replacement lens. Although some frames may look identical, there are differences in the frame materials that require specific lenses for each model.

Take a look at these descriptions and pictures to make sure they match your model.

Jupiter

The Oakley Jupiter is a modern twist on the traditional wayfarer style. It has a very similar front profile to its parent, Frogskin. Both have the keyhole nose bridge, rounded orbitals that are slightly squared in the corners and frame round lenses. The Jupiters are a shorter option for those with smaller faces, so they are a popular choice.

The Oakley Jupiter's ear stems set them apart from other Frogskins, in addition to their smaller size. They have a square O icon at the temple and a triangular cut on the bottom of each ear stem. The hinges are made of plastic, but are pinned with a metal screw. The left ear stem has Jupiter embossed inside, and Oakley icons are carved at the ends.

The Jupiter is made with nylon-infused plastic, which Oakley calls O Matter. It is very lightweight. The SKU format is a slightly older model and follows the 2 numbers dash 3 number sequence (e.g. 03-245).

Jupiter LX

The Oakley Jupiter is almost indistinguishable from the Oakley LX at a glance. The profile of the Oakley Jupiter and LX are almost identical. They also have similar ear stem styles. The Jupiter LX is made from acetate, which is a heavier material than the Jupiter's O Matter. Acetate frames are heavier, which can lead to some limitations. However, it allows for more stylistic creativity. The Jupiter LX has many styles with multi-colored layers and graphic inlays. The Jupiter LX's heavy-duty, 4-barrel hinges make it easy to differentiate from the Jupiter.

Instead of being engraved into the ear stem with raised plastic, the "Jupiter” inscribed on the Jupiter LX is written in paint. This can be removed by using the device. The specifications for the Jupiter LX can be found on the nose bridge. They have an eye diameter of 57mm and a bridge width of 15mm. The lenses for the Jupiter LX and Jupiter LX may be very similar, but they are not interchangeable.

Jupiter Squared

The Jupiter Squared is next in the family, which was introduced in 2011 but is still in production. This style has more squared lenses and orbitals, as the name implies. It is not square but it is more boxy than its predecessor. The keyhole bridge that was featured on the Jupiter and Jupiter LX was removed. It has been replaced by a standard horseshoe shape.

With the Jupiter Squared the silhouette of the ear-stem introduced with the Jupiter Squared is maintained. However, the dip at the bend of ear stem is now sharper, creating an aggressive point. A new geometric metal accent was added to the Jupiter with rivets that were inspired by the handle of a switchblade knives. The lower two-thirds (or lower) of the ear stems are covered by textured Unobtanium socks.

The Jupiter Squared, like the Jupiter, is made of O Matter. It features a similar hinge design with a screw acting a pin. Oakley Jupiter Squared is indented on the inner left ear stem. The printed SKU is located above the indentation at the top lip. It is formatted as OO9135 -##. The base of the SKU is represented by the double O (the letter 9135), and the last two numbers indicate which colorway is associated with it. OO9135-11, for example, is the Valentino Rossi Signature series Jupiter Squared. OO9135-20 Rootbeer Jupiter Squared frame featuring grey lenses.

Jupiter Factory Lite

Oakley, riding the success of Jupiter Squared, released the Jupiter Factory Light in 2012. It was first released by Sunglass Hut as an exclusive. It came in four colorways: Brown, Tungsten Iridium with Ice Blue, Brushed Aluminum and Ice Blue, Dark Blue, Dark Blue, and Matte Black, with Black Iridium. Factory Lite SKU is OO4066

Although the specifications and silhouette are nearly identical to the Jupiter Squared's, the differences can be easily seen without too much effort. The Factory Lite's standout feature is its use of carbon fiber and aluminium, with small amounts of titanium and O Matter.

The earstems are made of lightweight carbon fiber and showcase the unique pattern of the material. The bottom third of the earstem is covered by unobtainium inserts. The temple design is simple, with only the square O icon. There's a small gap between the front of the earstem and the temple, which allows for a glimpse of the titanium twin shock hinge. The hinge is located on the temple's inside right.

While the aluminum front looks the same as the Jupiter Squared's, there are lines in the outer orbitals that allow for lens installation. The aluminum's conductive qualities (heating in warm environments, cooling in cold), make the inner nosepiece of the sunglasses from O Matter. This allows for comfortable wearing in all kinds of environments.

Jupiter Carbon

The Oakley Jupiter Carbon was released in 2013. It isn't so unique as an individual frame, but it does have a Mr. A Potato Head. The Jupiter Carbon has no innovative design or new features. It's simply a mix-up of the Jupiter Squared, and the Jupiter Factory Light. The Jupiter Carbon came in the same colorways as the Factory Lite, except for the Ferrari Special Edition.

The carbon fiber ear stems were made with Unobtainium and twin shock hinges. However, the Jupiter Carbon's front was replaced by O Matter. This material is the same as the Jupiter Squared. The fronts of the Jupiter Squared & Jupiter Carbon are identical, except for the hinges. This means that they can be used interchangeably.

Jupiter Squared LX

The Jupiter Squared LX is made from acetate, not O Matter, and has metal barrel hinges. The Jupiter Squared LX is essentially the same model as the Squared, with the same profile and same temple design. The specs for the Jupiter Squared LX are different. Therefore, the lenses are only compatible with that model. The SKU for the Jupiter Squared LX model is OO2040
