Police Blotter: Warrant Arrests, Burglaries in Nutley

The following information was provided by the Nutley Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

March 16:

9:28 a.m.: Nutley police found 41-year-old Steven Cappiello at a home on Ridge Road after conducting a search on outstanding warrants charges. Cappiello was taken to police headquarters, where he posted $1,725 and was released pending court dates in Livingston, Kinnelon and Lyndhurst.

9:25 a.m.: Police are investigating a second burglary in the last few weeks at a Hillside Avenue apartment complex maintenance room. Police said power tools were stolen in this burglary.

3:49 p.m.: Police were called to a Kingsland Avenue gas station after a dispute over gas prices. The customer reportedly asked for $15 worth of gas, but was given $25. Police resolved the matter.

4:14 p.m.: A Dodd Street resident told police he was upset over the removal of shrubs that created privacy between his home and a nearby business owner. The man was angry about the incident and a woman thought they were directed at her.

10:41 p.m.: A Manalapan youth was taken into custody on Franklin Avenue after the Manalapan police department reported the girl was in Nutley without her parent’s permission. She was turned over to her parent’s custody.

March 17:

1:09 a.m.: A 22-year-old Norristown, Pa. man was arrested on several charges after police stopped his car on Route 21 after it was reportedly speeding.
Randy Debblay was arrested after a computer check for driving with suspended driver’s licenses from Pennsylvania and New Jersey driver’s licenses. In addition, Debblay also had an outstanding $1,000 warrant from Burlington City.
Debblay was taken to police headquarters, issued several summonses and released after posting bail.

March 18:

6:15 a.m.: A 23-year-old Paterson man was arrested on several charges following a car accident on Route 21.
When police arrived, a witness said a man involved in the accident fled. Police located the man, identified as Todd Goodwin, after he jump over a barrier and began to run on River Road.
After police stopped Goodwin, he denied being involved in the accident. Police found a set of keys from the car involved in the accident.
Goodwin was arrested and charged with obstruction and issued several summonses — including one for leaving the scene of an accident.

March 19:

7:30 a.m.: Nutley police are investigating an act of criminal mischief at a Washington Ave business owner involving damage to cement bags and the discharge of three fire extinguishers.

10:55 a.m.: A Linn Road resident reported her 2-year-old toddler was missing.
Police found the mother on Craig Place looking for her child. The toddler was quickly located hiding in the home.

11:03 p.m.: Nutley police are investigating after a Harrison Street resident reported the front tire of their car had been slashed while parked on Monsignor Deluca Place.

3:09 p.m.: Police are investigating the theft of several items from a Milton Avenue resident’s car.

March 20:

10:04 p.m.: Nutley police are investigating a shoplifting at a Franklin Avenue business where a group stole several items. Police have a description of the suspects.

8:37 p.m.: Nutley police arrested a 45-year-old Belleville man after responding to a report of a shoplifting at a Franklin Avenue business.
Robert Christian was arrested after a store employee identified him to police as the suspect entered a car, police said. In addition, officers recovered the stolen items and charged him with theft and hindering apprehension. Christian provided police with a false name.
At the time of his arrest, Christian had outstanding warrants out of Newark for $325 and Springfield for $658.
He was turned over to the custody of Linden Police.

March 21:

11:32 p.m.: An alert police officer noticed a woman in Nutley Municipal Court who was known to be a wanted by the Morris County Sheriff’s Office.
Aika Chaudhary, 35, was taken into custody and turned over to Morris County Sheriff’s officers.

7:49 p.m.: Nutley police were called to a Passaic Avenue convenience store in response to a missing 9-year-old child.
When police arrived, they found the child walking a block away and reunited the child with the mother. 

March 22:

11:25 a.m.: A 39-year-old man with several outstanding warrants was arrested after a traffic stop, Nutley police said. In addition to the warrant charges, police said when they attempted to arrest Angel Mendez, he resisted arrest and subsequent charges were added. He was also found to have warrants totaling $258 from Union City, $250 from Bloomfield and $1,000 from Newark. He was being held in lieu of $500 bail out of Nutley.

4:40 p.m.: A 47-year-old East Orange man was arrested for stealing hair products and drug charges after police said employees of a Harrison Street business contacted them.Rhett Ellis was found with the hair products and taken into custody, police said. While police were arresting Ellis, they discovered he was also in possession of a controlled dangerous substance. Ellis was issued a summons at police headquarters and released on his own recognizance.

5:42 p.m.: A youth attending track practice at DeMuro Park told police his $400 cell phone was stolen from an unlocked locker there. Police are investigating.

8:23 p.m.: Police are investigating an attempted burglary to a Margaret Avenue home. Police found the rear door glass was broken and the suspect used a drop cloth to muffle the sound.The incident remains under investigation.

8:23 p.m.: Police responded to a Coyeman Avenue residence to investigate a burglary that occurred between 5 p.m. and 8:23 p.m.

The homeowner told police they returned home to find the rear glass door shattered. The resident was unsure what items were missing.

March 23:

12:39 a.m.: Police are investigating a robbery that occurred at the intersection of River Road and Park Avenue. The victim told police after exiting a bus he was walking on Park Avenue when he was assaulted by three suspects and robbed of his money and a cell phone.
