In short, that’s done by launching NordVPN’s app, connecting to a server, and then accessing Netflix’s website or its app.

In fact, NordVPN can unblock over 20 different country-based Netflix content libraries. You don’t even have to put much effort into achieving that.

However, you need a trustworthy guide, and that’s exactly why I am here.

Ready to learn how to unleash the full potential of your Netflix subscription?

If you are – let’s jump right in!

Does NordVPN Work With Netflix?

Yes, NordVPN works with Netflix. In fact, NordVPN can unblock a whole slate of Netflix libraries, letting you stream in 4K (if you have a fast Web connection).

As I mentioned above, I’ve been using NordVPN for more than 7 years, practically daily. However, I’ve done in-depth tests to check if NordVPN works consistently well on all its supported devices in preparation for this guide.

Thanks to that, I can guarantee that NordVPN unblocks Netflix on a massive range of devices.

So, read this article carefully and do all the steps I’m about to explain.

If you encounter any problems, here’s my troubleshooting advice to help you out.

How to Watch Netflix With NordVPN? (Quick Guide)

Using NordVPN to unblock Netflix or switch to a specific country-based content library takes only a couple of minutes. As you’re about to see, that’s an easy and streamlined process, suitable even for first-time VPN users.

So, here’s a quick walkthrough on how to watch Netflix with NordVPN:

  1. Get your NordVPN subscription (use my time-limited discount).
  2. Download and install NordVPN’s application for your device.
  3. Launch the VPN and log in using your Nord Account credentials.
  4. Use the VPN to connect to the country whose Netflix library you want to watch.

NordVPN covers every platform imaginable. So, it’s no surprise that it works on Android TV-powered streaming devices and smart TVs.

Here’s how to use it to stream Netflix:

  1. Start by subscribing to NordVPN. I recommend subscribing using its website on your phone or computer, as that will help you speed up the rest of the procedure.
  2. Navigate to the Play Store app using your Android TV device. Download and install NordVPN from there, and then access the VPN.
  1. Launch NordVPN and log in to your Nord account. Then, connect to any VPN server based on the version of Netflix you want to access. For example, if you wish to unblock the British version of Netflix, connect to a server in the UK.
  2. Navigate to the Netflix app on your Android TV. If you don’t have it, download the app from Google’s Play Store. Then, open it and access your subscription.

Watch Netflix With NordVPN on an Apple TV

netflix on appletv

Apple TV doesn’t support VPN services, so you can’t install NordVPN directly on your Apple TV. However, you can use NordVPN’s SmartDNS feature, which lets you unblock the US version of Netflix. Here’s how that is done:

  1. Ensure that your Apple TV and the device you’ll use to set up SmartDNS (your computer, preferably) are on the same network. For example, your home Wi-Fi network.
  2. Subscribe to NordVPN and access your Nord account using the VPN’s website. Use your credentials to get to your Nord dashboard.
  3. Select “NordVPN” using the left-placed menu (in the “Services” section). On the right, select “Activate” (in the “SmartDNS” section).
  4. Wait a couple of moments until NordVPN registers your IP address. Then, NordVPN will show two DNS addresses, so keep that page open.
  5. Turn to your Apple TV and navigate to Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi > (select your network’s name). Then, go to Configure DNS > Manual.
  6. Input your primary (103.86.99.103) and secondary (103.86.96.103) DNS address. I recommend double-checking if you’ve entered the correct numbers.
  7. You now need to restart your Apple TV for the new DNS addresses to become active. Go to Settings > System > Restart. Wait until Apple TV reboots.
  8. Lastly, access the Netflix app on your streaming device. If you don’t have it, download it from the tvOS App Store. Access your Netflix account and select any title you’d like to play.

Watch Netflix With NordVPN on a Smart TV

house of cards netflix

Smart TVs don’t support VPN software (unless your TV is powered by Fire TV or Android TV). However, NordVPN still works on devices that don’t support VPNs – through its SmartDNS.

The only restriction is that NordVPN’s SmartDNS unblocks Netflix’s original programming only, available for its US customers. So, you’ll still get a lot of content.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Make sure that your smart TV is connected to your home Wi-Fi network. If you use your computer to set up NordVPN’s SmartDNS, it should also be on your home Wi-Fi.
  2. Get your NordVPN subscription and access your Nord account using the VPN’s website. You should be looking at your Nord dashboard at this moment.
  3. Select “NordVPN” on the left. Then, pick “Activate” in the “SmartDNS” section on the right. NordVPN will now register your IP address and show you two DNS addresses.
  4. On your TV, navigate to Internet- or Network-related settings. Look for an option to change your TV’s DNS settings. A quick Google search (based on your TV’s exact model) should help you find DNS-related settings.
  5. Input NordVPN’s primary (103.86.99.103) and secondary (103.86.96.103) DNS. Restart your TV for the new settings to take effect.
  6. Finally, open the Netflix app on your TV. If you can’t find it, visit your TV’s App Store and download it.
  7. Access Netflix and login to your account. Since NordVPN’s SmartDNS unblock the US version of Netflix, you should now have access to movies and TV shows available in that library. Enjoy watching Netflix!

Watch Netflix With NordVPN on Roku

netflix on roku

Even though Roku supports apps (or, better said – channels), you won’t find VPNs among those. That’s because you can’t install a VPN directly on Roku.

However, there’s a workaround. So, here’s how to watch Netflix with NordVPN on your Roku:

  1. Subscribe to NordVPN. Then, think about how you’ll proceed – based on whether you have a router that can run VPNs or if you’d like to share your VPN connection from your computer.
  2. You now need to set up NordVPN (based on the abovementioned options). Make sure to turn to my guide on setting up NordVPN on Roku to learn more.
  3. No matter if you set up NordVPN on a router or share your VPN connection from a computer, connect to a VPN server based on the version of Netflix you want to unblock.
  4. Ensure that your Roku is covered by your VPN-protected network. If you’ve set up NordVPN on a router, you need to connect Roku to that router via Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Or, if you’ve shared a VPN connection, connect Roku to the network created by your computer.
  5. Finally, launch Netflix on your Roku. Once you log in, you should see Netflix’s library based on the location of your chosen NordVPN server. That’s it!

Watch Netflix With NordVPN on a Game Console (Xbox, PlayStation)

netflix on game console - playstation

Game consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation don’t support VPN apps natively.

So, you have two options in front of you. You can install NordVPN on your router or set up NordVPN’s SmartDNS directly on your console.

Before diving any deeper, know that there’s a significant difference between setting up NordVPN on a router and running its SmartDNS.

The router method allows you to connect to any server and unblock more than 20 different versions of Netflix. That’s because you can set up a VPN connection to any of NordVPN’s 5,000+ servers on your router.

However, this method has a complicated installation procedure.

The method involving NordVPN’s SmartDNS lets you unblock a single version of Netflix. Since Nord’s DNS servers are located in the USA, you’ll unblock only Netflix’s original programming available to those in the US.

However, this method requires no extra hardware and is relatively easy to complete.

If you decide to set up NordVPN on a router, use the provided link to learn how that’s done. And if you want the easier route, here’s how to set up NordVPN’s SmartDNS.

I also have a dedicated guide on setting up NordVPN on Xbox, which brings a treasure trove of tips alongside all the possible methods of running the VPN on Microsoft’s consoles.

Once you set up NordVPN, you can download Netflix on your Xbox and PlayStation. The Netflix app is available for all Xbox (One X/S and Series X/S) and PlayStation (4 and 5) consoles.

NordVPN Not Working With Netflix? (Troubleshooting Steps)

NordVPN won’t tell you which servers work for media streaming.

So, if Netflix doesn’t work with NordVPN in your case, you most probably need to find a server that works (on your own).

Alternatively, you can switch to another protocol using NordVPN’s settings.

You can also try deleting your device’s cache, which helps force Netflix to show you the correct content library.

What follows is a series of troubleshooting steps to take when NordVPN doesn’t work with Netflix. Keep reading to learn more!

1. Try Other VPN Servers

Streaming-friendly servers are not labeled in NordVPN.

So, it’s up to you to find those that work with Netflix, which I fully understand is a tedious and time-consuming process.

In preparation for this guide, I talked to NordVPN’s customer support to find out which of their servers work with Netflix.

They told me that servers in the following countries work with Netflix: the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Finland, Poland, Austria, Lithuania, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, India, and Australia.

However, they couldn’t provide me with a list of server names.

Instead, they advised me to mark individual servers as my favorites once I find those that work.

So, you now have the list of countries that contain NordVPN’s servers that work with Netflix. It’s up to you to test the servers found there.

Make sure not to click on countries’ names in NordVPN’s sidebar.

Instead, use the three dotsicon to reveal individual servers.

choose us region nordvpn

Once you find NordVPN Netflix servers that work, click on the heart-shaped icon to save it for quick access later.

That server will appear in the “My Favorites segment at the top of NordVPN’s sidebar.

2. Try Another (Streaming-Friendly) VPN Protocol

Unless you pick a specific protocol, NordVPN will try to find the best one for your specific case. That’s based on your Web connection’s parameters and your physical location. However, feel free to switch to another protocol manually at any moment.

So, select the “Settings icon in the bottom-left corner of NordVPN’s interface.

Then, pick “General” using the sidebar you’ll see on the left.

On the right, select a VPN protocol using the dropdown menu next to “VPN Protocol.”

Based on the operating system you use, you’ll see all or some of these protocols: OpenVPN (TCP/UDP), NordLynx, and IKEv2.

nordvpn change protocol

Based on my experience, I recommend the NordLynx protocol.

That one can unblock Netflix across many NordVPN servers while also providing ultra-fast performance even on highly remote servers.

Otherwise, go with OpenVPN. It doesn’t matter if you choose that protocol’s UDP or TCP variant. However, the UDP variant is somewhat faster than the TCP type, so keep that in mind if you have a relatively slow Web connection.

3. Clear Your Web Browser’s Cache & History

Web applications, especially those as complex as Netflix, save cache data on your device to speed up their performance. However, if Netflix’s currently stored cache points to your actual location, using a VPN will still produce an error while trying to stream.

So, the trick is to remove your Web browser’s cache. Then, you can fire up NordVPN, connect to a VPN server that works with Netflix, and access the streaming service once again.

Here’s how to remove cache and history in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera, and Safari. If you use some other Web browser, a quick Google search will reveal the instructions for your specific application.

cookies and permissions edge

Keep in mind that you can choose the types of data you want to delete.

If your Web browser stores usernames and passwords, there’s no reason to delete those.

Instead, you should focus on clearing your browsing history, cookies, and cached files/images.

4. Clear Your Device’s Cache Data

If you use a media streaming device to watch Netflix, know that individual apps store cache and other local data on your device.

That cache could be why Netflix refuses to show a different version of its library, even if you use NordVPN in the background.

As you can imagine, the solution is to clear your streaming device’s cache and other locally stored data. However, that’s easier said than done because most streaming devices don’t allow you to do that manually.

The provided links will show you what you need to do for Android TV and Fire OS (Amazon’s Fire TV Stick). However, if you use some other platform (such as Apple TV or Roku, for example), your best bet is to remove Netflix and restart your device.

More precisely, you need to uninstall Netflix. Then, restart your streaming device by keeping it unplugged for around 30 seconds. Plug it back into a wall outlet (or your TV), and wait until it boots up. Finally, install Netflix once again.

Before opening the Netflix app, ensure that your device’s traffic routes through NordVPN’s servers. You’ll want to force Netflix to check your VPN connection’s parameters instead of reading any locally stored cache data.

5. Ask NordVPN for Assistance

NordVPN has an incredibly responsive customer support team, offering multiple support channels.

So, if nothing else helps, I recommend launching NordVPN’s site and turning to the VPN’s live chat support (which should be visible in the bottom-right corner).

NordVPN’s live chat should be available 24/7.

However, if you don’t see that option for some reason, you can contact the VPN via support@nordvpn.com. NordVPN should respond in less than 24 hours, which has always been my experience using that support channel.

6. NordVPN Won’t Show All Netflix Shows?

If you don’t see all of Netflix’s shows while using NordVPN, or if you see empty thumbnails that never fully load, you’re most probably using a server that doesn’t work with Netflix.

That situation happens when Netflix recognizes that you use a VPN.

That streaming service can tell if your IP address is associated with a VPN – and block your access.

Based on your device’s cache data, you might see the movies and TV shows whose thumbnails are already stored on your device (which is why new ones fail to load).

The easiest solution is to switch to another NordVPN server or use a different VPN protocol. If that doesn’t help, you should clear your Web browser’s cache and history.

7. Getting the Netflix Proxy Error While Using NordVPN?

The infamous “Netflix Proxy Error” (also known as – Error M7111-5059) appears when the website identifies your use of a VPN. That doesn’t often happen when using NordVPN, but there are multiple solutions when it does.

First, go through troubleshooting steps 1-5 above, which will advise you to switch to another server, try another protocol, or clear your Web browser’s or device’s cache.

If that doesn’t help, I recommend turning to NordVPN’s obfuscated servers.

Those servers break down your incoming and outgoing Internet traffic into small packages. Those packages can be so small that they can evade even the most robust anti-VPN systems, like Netflix’s.

To access NordVPN’s obfuscated servers, do the following:

  1. Select the “Settings button using NordVPN’s UI (bottom-left corner).
  2. Pick “General” on the left side of the “Preferences window.
  3. Next to “VPN Protocol,” select “OpenVPN.”
  4. Close the “Preferences” window and return to NordVPN’s home page.
  5. Scroll to the bottom of the sidebar on the left.
  6. Click on the “three dots icon next to “Obfuscated.”
  7. Select a county whose Netflix library you want to access. That’s it!

What’s the Best Alternative to NordVPN for Netflix?

NordVPN is among the most capable VPNs for Netflix.

However, it’s not your only option. Some of the best alternatives to NordVPN for streaming Netflix are ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and CyberGhost.

Here’s a bit more information about each of those VPN services, focusing on their streaming- and Netflix-related features:

1. Surfshark

I often recommend Surfshark for its ease of use. It also comes with incredibly fast speeds, which is especially handy if you want to stream using a relatively slow Web connection.

It supports 10+ Netflix regions, such as Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Malta, Monaco, the Netherlands, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

Also, you get apps for any computer, smartphone, tablet, or streaming device, as well as unlimited simultaneous connections.

2. ExpressVPN

ExpressVPN brings 3,000+ servers in 90+ countries and says that all those servers are optimized for streaming. That’s certainly true regarding their performance, as ExpressVPN is among the fastest VPNs.

When it comes to Netflix, ExpressVPN supports around 10 regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Italy, India, Spain, Japan, and Australia.

It works on a massive range of devices and gives you up to 5 simultaneous connections.

3. CyberGhost

Unlike most other VPNs, CyberGhost offers servers optimized for individual streaming platforms (as well as torrenting and even gaming).

That’s how it unblocks 5 Netflix regions such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Japan.

All those servers are optimized for speed, helping you unblock Netflix (and many other streaming services) on computers, phones, tablets, etc. On top of that, you get 7 simultaneous connections

FAQ

No, Netflix won’t ban you for using NordVPN. However, legally speaking, Netflix prohibits you from using VPNs and similar software, retaining the right to cut your access at any point.

In practice, the worst that can happen is seeing an error message.

Netflix has never banned a single subscriber for using a VPN, and we’re sure that won’t change in the future.

Netflix can block a range of IP addresses known to belong to individual VPN services, including NordVPN. That’s one of the reasons NordVPN won’t tell you precisely which servers to use to unblock Netflix.

That’s also why your favorite NordVPN server(s) might stop working with Netflix. However, NordVPN offers more than 5,000 servers in 60+ countries.

So, you won’t have a hard time finding an alternative server.

NordVPN servers that work with Netflix include the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Finland, Poland, Austria, Lithuania, Sweden, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Turkey, India, and Australia.

You can watch US Netflix using NordVPN. I recommend NordVPN’s New York-based servers to do so.

If you use a device like a computer, smartphone, or tablet, you should install NordVPN’s native application, and you’ll get to unblock 20+ different versions of Netflix.

Some devices don’t support VPN software, like smart TVs, game consoles, and streaming devices. On those devices, NordVPN can unblock US Netflix via its SmartDNS feature.

You can use NordVPN to stream Netflix in China. However, ask NordVPN’s support for the installation files designed specifically for users in China.

NordVPN’s apps for China come with ultra-strong protocols and access to obfuscated servers, helping you bypass the Chinese firewall.

Those servers are part of a special update channel, separate from NordVPN’s regular apps, as the VPN works continuously to improve them.

That’s a Wrap!

Congrats on making it to the end of my guide on watching Netflix with NordVPN!

Even though NordVPN does have a few quirks (like any other VPN), it’s one of the best options you have for unblocking and accessing any Netflix library.

Aside from accessing 20+ Netflix regional libraries, NordVPN is quite fast, breaks through the streaming service’s geo-blocks with ease, and is unbelievably easy to use.
