I saw a small bit of "No Good Deed" on television recently and realized that this was a Samuel L. Jackson film I had never seen or heard of. I am used to seeing Mr. Jackson play cops but what drew me to the film was his love for the cello. I HAD to purchase this dvd just to see how this seemingly lonely cop/musician turned out. It did not hurt, either, that this film also included Doug Hutchison (doing his Doug Hutchison "thing" that he is so good at). If you are a Samuel L. Jackson or Milla Jovovich fan, you should add this dvd to your collection. I also got an explanation from the merchant who sold me this dvd, through Amazon, telling me why no invoice was included. What a nice gesture. I would purchase from this vendor again. Thank you.

It was alright, but the story just fell flat, so much disappointment, no one wins, there is not trust with any character, it is just a depressing film to be honest, in the end everyone loses, and ends up dead. There is interest how it will all play out, but again it ends in disappointment. Nice cast though, with Jackson and Mila, but the story just bombed it.

Ein Cop, der sonst Autodiebstähle aufklärt, kommt zufällig in ein Haus, aber kaum noch raus… Dass dieser starbesetzte Film an der Kasse unterging, ist höchst ungerecht, denn wir haben es mit einem kleinen feinen B-Film des Neo-Noir-Meisters Bob Rafelson zu tun. Der Cop (Samuel L. Jackson) kommt also in die Fänge einer Bankräuberbande. Du liebe Zeit, hier werden Archetypen aufgefahren, dass es knallt (und gelegentlich wörtlich). Da ist die femme fatale (das ist doch mal eine legitime Nachfolgerin von Brigid O'Shaughnessy, gespielt von Milla Jovovich), der Choleriker, der überlegte, aber sadistisch-dominante Bandenchef, ein gewalttätiges, aber in zärtlicher Liebe verbundenes Seniorenpaar etc. pp. Mag man alles als klischeehaft ansehen, aber der Film ist eher Genrekost als Drama, und das ist er sehr versiert. Vor allem, weil er Klischees bricht, indem er sie auf die Spitze treibt, sodass sie sich sozusagen selbst zuschauen und reflektieren. Man kann das eben nicht so ganz ernst nehmen und überlegt sich gerade deshalb, wie viel schwächer manche Filme sind, weil sie es dennoch versuchen. Tarantinoeske Extremübertreibungen in Gesabbel und Gewalt gibt's aber auch nicht. Eher einen ironisch-satirischen Biss, etwa wenn ein Korea-Veteran andauernd im Ton der Jovialität rassistische Bemerkungen raushaut oder Milla Jovovich einen abgetrennten Zeh staubtrocken und völlig unerwartet mit einem echten Brüller kommentiert. Der Humor kommt unerwartet und ist darum gelegentlich saukomisch, in einem eigentlich nicht komischen Film.

Und das scheint mir Methode zu haben. Hier kommt einfach ein nachdenklicher Mensch in einen absurden Strudel, das ist eine sehr vergnügliche Versuchsanordnung über den Irrsinn des Lebens, der daraus entsteht, dass Gauner eben auch nur Menschen sind. Ist das beim Malteser Falken groß anders, oder bei saftigen B-Perlen, an die man kaum Ansprüche an das (Psycho-)Logische stellt?

Schließlich fand ich die kammerspielartige Mache mit den vielen extremen Großaufnahmen sehr gut. Das gibt dem Film phasenweise etwas von made for TV, aber es konterkariert eben auch den Oberflächenglanz. Da sehen wir erst die Jovovich, fast schon aufdringlich platt als femme fatale auf die Sofalehne gegossen und die Beine so übereinanderschlagend, dass wir fürchten oder hoffen (je nach Sichtweise...), jetzt macht der Rafelson gleich noch einen auf Verhoeven und dessen Basic Instinct, nur platter. Aber in vielen Großaufnahmen sehen wir, dass ihr Gesicht alles andere als makellos ist, bei Jackson (bei dem das aber auch nicht neu ist) dito. Und das ergänzt sich ganz gut mit den Außenaufnahmen, bei denen sowas wie Landschaftstotalen nie vorkommen, sondern nur allegorische Un-Orte wie das Gelb-Blau einer Tankstelle, Hinterhöfe, Wände, eine austauschbare Kleinstadt, ein Verkehrsstau, eine Grenze, die uns ebenfalls nicht einen orientierenden Überblick gewährt. Bester Neo-Noir eben.

Und die Erzähltechnik überzeugt. Es geht u.a. auch darum, ob die femme fatale noch eine gute Seite hat und wenn nicht, ob der Cop ihr verfallen wird. Nicht nur, weil in beiden Fällen Dashiell Hammett die literarische Vorlage geliefert hat, drängt sich der Vergleich zum „Malteser Falken“ auf. Der Film bereitet sorgsam auf die finale Begegnung der genannten Figuren vor: Rafelson hat genau drei Mal nach einem Schnitt das Gegenteil von dem gezeigt, was vorher angekündigt wurde. Das ist natürlich nicht neu, jemand sagt, ich mache dies und jenes ums Verrecken nicht, Schnitt, und schon macht er's. Aber hier wirkt es über den schnellen Gag hinaus. Am Schluss wird Jackson nämlich bzgl. Jovovich eine Entscheidung verkünden, aber wir sehen nicht mehr, dass sie ausgeführt wird. Ist das nun final und nach dem Abspann zu denken, oder wird es ein viertes Mal heißen, dass das Gegenteil von dem eintritt, was angekündigt wird? Das ist doch mal eine interessante, ambivalente Variante zur Bogart-/Astor-Finalszene des Malteser Falken.

Somit war ich in allen Punkten hochzufrieden, und wenn man den Film als bewusstes (und m.E. extrem virtuoses) Spiel mit Versatzstücken sieht, dann stört auch nicht der Punkt, der mir am stärksten bei den Glaubwürdigkeitsmängeln aufgefallen ist. Halten ein paar popelige Nummernschilder wirklich eine aus allernächster Nähe abgefeuerte Gewehrkugel auf? Schwamm drüber.

Compared to IMDB user ratings I usually end up giving about one character lower that users (guess that is my subjective use of the scale - 10 is impossibly high for me on its from 1 to 10 scale. Nach Ansicht von Klappentext und Titelbild hätte ich einen actionreicheren Film erwartet. Die meiste Zeit über ist der Protagonist (S. Jackson) jedoch an einen Stuhl gefesselt und wird mal mehr, mal weniger bedroht, während er langsam eine Beziehung zu seiner Wächterin (M. Jovovich) aufbaut. Viel mehr passiert auch eigentlich nicht.
Diese Szenen hätten in der eigentlich guten Besetzung auch eine intensive Psycho-Studie sein können, wirken jedoch halbherzig und beliebig, als wüssten die Schauspieler nichts über die Figur, die sie verkörpern sollen. Die beste Szene ist ein Klavier-Cello-Duett der beiden Figuren, das jedoch für die weitere Handlung recht belanglos bleibt.
Interssanteste Figur ist die Wächterin, die sich nicht entscheiden kann, auf welcher Seite sie stehen will. Der innere Konflikt mit großem Potenzial bleibt jedoch seltsam aussagelos. Schade.
Alles in allem ziemlich enttäuschend.
