      Critics Consensus

Night Sky reaches for the stars when it really should have settled on a feature length finish, but the combined supernova of J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek shines bright.

John Doyle Globe and Mail It is a rare example of looking upon the elderly with only benign admiration, tenderness and authentic respect. Irene and Franklin are not cute codgers; they are fully formed characters whose strengths are more outsized than their frailties. Jul 11, 2022 Full Review Andrew Male Times (UK) ... A show that is hypnotically strange, moving effortlessly between detective drama, sci-fi horror and elegiac rumination on life. Jul 8, 2022 Full Review Brian Tallerico The Playlist Every time that “Night Sky” threatens to drift off into something disposable, Simmons and Spacek shine, reminding everyone that they’re true stars. Rated: B May 31, 2022 Full Review Nuha Hassan Slay Away It’s bound to leave viewers contemplating the universe's secrets with its rich world-building and exploration of family dynamics. Rated: 4/5 Sep 4, 2023 Full Review Alison Lanier Pajiba The Night Sky is an undeniable misfire, but inside the slow first season is a gem of a story. I want to take the whole thing into Final Cut and chop it down to a short film. Jun 15, 2022 Full Review Anne Brodie What She Said Night Sky’s rich, far-reaching imagination soars into sci-fi and mysticism without sacrificing the characters’ authenticity – Spacek and Simmons are phenomenal. Linda S A great sci-fi concept which doesn't revolve around beautiful young things with superpowers. I love the fact that it centres on an old couple who have been through tragedy in their lives. But yet again, a unique series has been cancelled before it takes off. I've only just come across it in 2024. Instead of allowing for people to find these series, the production companies take the first few episode numbers and pronounce "failure". With the calibre of actors involved, you would think that they would give it a chance. I wonder sometimes, why they bother producing these programmes if they're not willing to give them time. No wonder these streaming services are failing Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/06/24 Full Review Jedidiah W So sad that they cancelled the show. It was set up very well to keep the mystery going. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/12/24 Full Review m1ckDELTA M It's a rare thing to be able to juggle family drama with science fantasy and mystery. Open Range failed horribly but Night Sky finds a balance that is rewarding and worth every minute getting to a wonderful payoff. As is to be expected, there are a couple of "cliffhangers" (for want of a better word) that leave viewers hoping for a second season but there is a satisfying enough measure of closure even without one. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 12/04/23 Full Review Grieg S Excellent, engrossing, slow burn of a show. Disappointing it was not renewed. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/24/23 Full Review Florencia M Amazing Serie. So captivating. Science fiction to the fullest. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/19/23 Full Review Dan P J. K. Simmons is one of those actors who makes anything he's in better just by being in it. But this is an interesting, intricate, deliberately-building story. Each episode is so good — until the very end of the seventh and about the middle of the eighth. There is a "bad guy" who is so cartoonish and baseless that it's as if he's from a different (and very bad) show. But once he's sorted, the end is terrific. Except that it was cancelled without even a chance! Did Amazon even advertise it? I only stumbled on it. I wish they'd reconsider and continue the story.
